A refurbished desktop can run a church’s YouTube stream around the clock if it can encode the chosen video reliably and the church plans for internet, power, recording, and recovery. The computer alone cannot guarantee uninterrupted service: “24/7” is an operating goal, not a YouTube guarantee. This guide walks through a do-it-yourself encoder setup, from checking YouTube access to monitoring and troubleshooting.
Can a refurbished PC stream to YouTube all day?
Yes—provided the actual desktop can handle the church’s video sources, scenes, resolution, frame rate, and encoder without overload, and its connection and power remain stable. OBS’s minimum requirements are only a starting point, not proof that a specific refurbished computer can stream reliably. OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic Windows requirements, but warns that performance depends on the encoder, output settings, and scene complexity (OBS system requirements).
A fixed, low-motion camera scene has different demands from a multi-camera composition with animated overlays. Evaluate the computer you receive—not just the seller’s headline specification—and test it for a sustained period at the settings you plan to use. No particular refurbished model, seller, price, warranty, or India availability is established here.

YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Initial enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this before the planned launch (YouTube live-streaming eligibility).

- Model: Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor (SFF)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
- Sign in to the church’s YouTube account and complete channel verification if needed.
- Enable live streaming and allow time for initial activation.
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube or a custom service as appropriate, and enter the requested connection details.
- Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to the stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current Studio workflow. Check the stream’s title, privacy, schedule, and intended audience settings before launch.
Inspect and test the refurbished desktop
Before relying on the PC, confirm its exact configuration and physical condition. Storage health, cooling, ports, operating-system support, and available graphics encoding options can matter as much as the processor name. Check that it can connect to the church’s capture devices and audio sources.
- Match the test to the real production: use the intended camera or prerecorded source, audio, overlays, scenes, resolution, and frame rate.
- Watch OBS’s status for dropped frames and encoding overload during a sustained test.
- Reduce scene complexity or output demands if the computer struggles; OBS notes that GPU load and scene composition can contribute to encoding problems (OBS encoding performance troubleshooting).
- Prefer a seller with a return window, verify the unit’s specifications and supported operating system, and test it promptly after delivery.
Do not treat a processor generation or RAM figure by itself as a guarantee. A machine that works for a static scene may fail with multiple sources, transitions, or animated graphics.

Set the video encoder and test upload capacity
YouTube recommends matching stream quality to a reliable connection, using constant bitrate, setting a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and using RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its guidance lists 2 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate for 720p at 30 frames per second. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular PC or internet line can sustain that output (YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
- Start with a modest output, such as 720p at 30 fps, only if that fits the church’s source and intended presentation.
- In OBS, set the video resolution and frame rate, then choose an encoder the PC can sustain. Set rate control to constant bitrate where available, select a bitrate appropriate to the source and measured connection, and set the keyframe interval to two seconds.
- Use the YouTube server URL and stream key for the stream. Choose RTMPS where the encoder offers it.
- Measure upload capacity at the church—not just download speed—and repeat at the times the stream will operate. Account for other people and devices sharing the connection.
- Leave at least 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate, as YouTube recommends. If the connection varies, lower the stream bitrate or resolution and retest.
- Start the encoder, inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then begin the public or scheduled broadcast only when the feed looks and sounds right.
ISP performance, routing, contention, and power conditions vary by location and time. These settings are not India-specific service guarantees. YouTube also advises starting ahead of an event, checking the preview, monitoring health, and testing a backup path if one has been configured (YouTube streaming tips).
Prepare Windows and OBS for unattended operation
On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery and set sleep and hibernate behavior so the encoder does not suspend while streaming. The screen can turn off independently if that does not interrupt the video output. Microsoft documents the controls in its Windows 11 power settings guide.

Test what happens after a restart, Windows update, OBS crash, or brief power loss. Do not assume OBS will restore the broadcast automatically. Assign a person to receive alerts, reach the church site if required, and follow a written recovery procedure for restarting the PC, OBS, and stream. One desktop is one encoder; it is not a redundant system. A backup encoder only helps if it is separately configured and tested.

Plan power and network continuity
These are separate failure points: local electricity, the desktop and encoder, the router and local network, the ISP connection, and YouTube’s ingest. A UPS may keep the desktop and network equipment running through a short local interruption, but it cannot fix an ISP outage. Size any UPS according to the measured load of the equipment and the runtime the church needs; no particular capacity or runtime is established here.
- Where practical, connect the desktop to the router by Ethernet rather than relying on Wi-Fi.
- If using a UPS, include the router and relevant network equipment in the protected load.
- For stronger continuity, consider a separately available internet path or backup encoder only when the church can configure and test the handoff.
- Test network restoration and power restoration, and make sure someone knows how to recover the broadcast.
YouTube warns that network disruption can break a stream and that shared use can reduce available upload bandwidth (YouTube streaming tips).

Choose a recording and archive plan
A continuous live stream should not be treated as a guaranteed complete YouTube replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive backup (YouTube archive guidance).
Decide whether the church’s priority is a continuous watch page, a complete recording archive, or both. If complete recordings matter, configure local recording in OBS and test that files are created, grow as expected, and play back correctly. Plan disk space and retention so the recording drive does not fill. Alternatively, plan shorter sessions with a tested handoff; do not assume YouTube will create a complete replay from a stream that runs beyond its archive window.

- Verify live access, stream privacy, title, schedule, and the correct stream key.
- Run a representative test with the actual video and audio sources, not only a still image.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and open the watch page on a phone.
- Confirm upload remains stable with the planned bitrate and YouTube’s recommended headroom.
- Check OBS for encoding overload or dropped frames and adjust settings before the service.
- Verify the local recording exists, is growing, and can be played; confirm available disk space.
- Test power and network recovery, reboot behavior, and the assigned operator’s recovery steps.
- Name a volunteer or operator responsible for monitoring. An encoder running unattended is not the same as a monitored 24/7 service.
YouTube recommends testing similar audio and movement, monitoring stream health, checking local archives, and verifying access from both the channel and watch page (encoder guidance; streaming tips).

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or an unstable feed | Upload instability, competing network traffic, or a bitrate that exceeds reliable capacity. | Measure upload during stream hours, reduce competing use, lower bitrate or resolution, and retest with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. |
| OBS reports “encoding overloaded” | The encoder, scene, or output settings demand more than the refurbished PC can sustain. | Simplify scenes and overlays, lower resolution or frame rate, choose a suitable encoder, and repeat a sustained test. See OBS troubleshooting guidance. |
| The stream stops after the computer is left alone | Windows sleep or hibernate suspended the encoder, or a restart/crash was not recovered. | Review Windows power settings, then test restart and recovery behavior with an assigned operator. |
| No complete YouTube archive appears | The live stream exceeded 12 hours, or local recording was not configured or verified. | Use tested local recording and disk management, or plan shorter sessions with a tested handoff; streams beyond 12 hours may not be archived by YouTube. |
| The preview does not appear or the encoder cannot connect | Live access is not enabled, or the server URL or stream key is incorrect or outdated. | Confirm channel eligibility and enablement, then check the stream details in Live Control Room and update OBS with the current connection information. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the church’s stream is prerecorded video rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining a desktop encoder: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded video playback; it does not stream from a camera.
Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and team support. Uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers; every plan has the same features and only the billing length changes. The first day is free with no card, once per account.
There is nothing to keep running at the church, any quality up to 4K 60fps is included at one price per slot, and automatic recovery handles a YouTube drop. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. In India, UPI and cards are accepted; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support. See StreamNeo and plan details, then start the free first day.
