You can run a continuous YouTube stream from a modest PC using OBS, but a 24/7 broadcast depends on more than the processor: the PC, power, internet connection and encoder must all stay available. Start with a simple 720p30 H.264 stream, test it privately with the same content and audio you plan to use, and move to higher settings only if the sustained test stays healthy. For prerecorded videos, a cloud playout service can remove the need to leave the PC running.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel that is eligible for live streaming and has live streaming enabled. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A PC capable of running OBS and producing your chosen output. OBS cautions that meeting its system requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream adequately.
- A stable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for the selected bitrate and other household traffic.
- A stream source: for example, a scene in OBS with a video, images or other permitted content. A continuous prerecorded-video loop is different from a live camera feed.
- Time to test the full setup. A speed test alone does not show how OBS, your media and the connection behave during a sustained broadcast.
In India, actual upload capacity, power reliability and broadband performance depend on your location and provider. Measure your own connection and equipment; there is no single ISP plan or backup-power specification that fits every home.
Choose settings your PC and connection can sustain
YouTube’s current H.264 ingest guidance recommends the following video bitrates. These are encoder output targets sent to YouTube, not recommended ISP plan speeds or guarantees of performance on a particular PC.

| 720p30 | 3 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps |
For a low-power PC, begin with 720p30 at 3 Mbps. If a representative sustained test runs without performance or connection problems, try 1080p30 at 5 Mbps. The right setting depends on the entire workload, including the encoder, scene composition, frame rate and available upload headroom.

Protocol, codec and keyframes
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. For a compatibility-first first setup, H.264 is a sensible option where OBS supports it. YouTube also lists HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, but that does not mean every low-power PC can encode them efficiently.
- Set rate control to CBR (constant bitrate).
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Leave sufficient upload capacity beyond the video bitrate for network variation and other traffic. Verify with both a speed test and a sustained stream test.
Reduce load before upgrading hardware
If OBS struggles, reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes, and remove unnecessary animated or browser sources and filters. OBS identifies resolution, frame rate and scene complexity as factors in encoding performance. A supported hardware encoder can reduce CPU encoding work, but the PC still has to render the scene and handle the rest of the workload. Encoder quality and performance vary by hardware generation; older hardware encoders may produce lower quality at the same bitrate.

Set up YouTube Studio and OBS
- Enable live streaming. Confirm your channel can go live in YouTube Studio. If this is the first time enabling it, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Install OBS Studio. Download it from the official OBS download page. YouTube lists OBS as a free, open-source encoder.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Open Create → Go Live, then create or schedule a stream. In the encoder setup, copy the stream URL and stream key supplied by YouTube.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if available, then enter or select the server and stream key. If entering details manually, use the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screen captures or share it.
- Set OBS output. Open Settings → Output and choose an output mode and supported encoder. Set H.264, CBR and the bitrate for your chosen resolution and frame rate. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds if the encoder exposes that control.
- Set video dimensions and frame rate. Under Settings → Video, set a conservative output such as 1280×720 at 30 fps for the first trial. Keep the scene simple. If the PC and connection prove stable, test a higher output separately.
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard if useful. OBS’s wizard can offer an initial configuration, but it cannot replace a real test using your actual source media and expected run duration.
- Start with a private or unlisted test. Use the same media, audio, scene and settings intended for the public stream. Check that YouTube receives the feed, that audio is correct, and that Studio’s stream-health indicators and messages remain acceptable.
- Go public only after the test. Start the broadcast from YouTube Studio or OBS as configured, then keep a way to monitor stream health and recover if the encoder or connection drops.
Prepare for continuous operation
A 24/7 stream is only as dependable as its weakest link. With a local OBS setup, the computer must stay on and connected, and your home power and internet must remain available. Plan how you will notice a failure and restart the encoder or restore the connection; YouTube’s health display helps you monitor a stream, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted service from a consumer PC or home ISP.
Run a sustained test long enough to expose problems that a brief preview can miss. Watch for dropped frames, encoder overload, audio drift, overheating, unwanted sleep or restart behavior, and changes in the connection. Test again after changing the scene, media, bitrate, encoder or frame rate.

What happens to the archive of a 24-hour stream?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a single uninterrupted 24-hour session becoming one complete automatic archive. If keeping recordings matters, plan for that separately rather than assuming the live feed will produce a complete VOD.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API also describes continuous broadcasts as an ongoing broadcast resource, including a use case where a separate interview broadcast can be created from part of the content without stopping the continuous feed. That behavior does not change the archive-duration guidance.

Copyright and channel rules still apply
A file looping through an encoder is not automatically permitted content. YouTube’s live content must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms. Matching another copyrighted live broadcast or having an active copyright strike can lead to live-streaming restrictions. Use original material or video and music you are properly licensed to stream, and check the rights for continuous playback as well as a one-time upload.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Live streaming is not enabled, the stream is not ready, or the URL/key is incorrect. | Check channel eligibility and activation, confirm the stream in Studio, and re-enter the current URL and key in OBS. Keep the key private. |
| Stream health reports connection problems or frames drop | Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating, or other traffic is competing for bandwidth. | Run a speed test, reduce the encoder bitrate or output settings, and test again while the household uses the connection normally. |
| OBS reports encoding overload or the video stutters | The PC cannot sustain its encoder, resolution, frame rate or scene workload. | Lower resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, remove costly sources and filters, or test a supported hardware encoder. |
| Picture is present but audio is wrong or missing | Audio source routing, levels or media behavior differ from the intended setup. | Check OBS audio meters and source selection, then test representative content privately before going public. |
| The stream stops after hours unattended | The PC, power, network or encoder stopped, or a system sleep/restart interrupted OBS. | Review power and sleep settings, check the PC and router connection, and set up a practical way to monitor and restart the local encoder. |
| A complete 24-hour recording is missing | The session exceeded YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic archive window. | Plan a separate recording or archive workflow if retaining the full content is important. |
Local OBS or cloud playout?
| Approach | Best suited to | What must remain available |
|---|---|---|
| OBS on your PC | Local control, live camera input or a custom real-time scene. | Your PC, power, internet connection and OBS session. |
| Cloud playout | Looping prerecorded videos without dedicating a PC at home. | The cloud service and its connection to YouTube; check a provider’s current availability, price and plan limits before choosing. |
YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud option for 24/7 streams of prerecorded videos. That listing does not establish its current availability in India, price or plan limits. Cloud playout is not necessarily suitable for a live camera or computer-generated real-time feed.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your source is prerecorded video and the goal is to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a low-power PC running, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud.
- Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- It attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required (one free day per account).
- Monthly: $9.99 per month. The service also offers shorter and longer billing periods.
Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. See StreamNeo for details. To try it, start your free day with StreamNeo.
