You can keep a YouTube live broadcast running from a server by sending it a continuous feed from an encoder, such as FFmpeg or a graphical encoder. First verify that your channel can livestream, prepare a source that can run continuously, configure the encoder for YouTube’s ingest settings, and test the whole chain. A persistent broadcast is technically possible, but it is not an uptime guarantee—and game footage or music rights can still cause YouTube to interrupt it.
What you need before you start
A server-based stream has four parts: an eligible YouTube channel, a game-footage source, an encoder process running on the server, and a stable connection from that server to YouTube. Decide what “footage source” means for your setup: it might be a prerecorded video, captured output from a console, or an emulator. Those are different workflows, and rights for one source do not automatically cover the others.
- YouTube access: YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days to use live streaming. YouTube lists encoder streaming as a supported method.
- A source that stays available: A file must be readable for the duration of the stream; a live capture or emulator must keep producing output. Check that any planned loop or playlist actually works in your chosen software before launching the broadcast.
- An encoder: It packages the source as a live feed and sends it to YouTube. A graphical encoder can be easier to inspect visually; FFmpeg is a command-line media input/output tool that can be run as a background process. No OBS-versus-FFmpeg performance comparison is established here.
- Reliable server connectivity and power: Use a speed test and a representative test stream to check the actual host and uplink. If you use a local server, an uninterruptible power supply may help with local power interruptions, but it is not a YouTube requirement.
- Rights for every included element: Identify the game, soundtrack, overlays, and any other third-party material before going live. A license for one element may not cover the rest.
Choose a server and footage workflow
Use a local server you already have
An existing computer or server may be sufficient if it can run the source and encoder continuously and send the stream at the selected settings. Confirm its codec support and test the intended workload rather than assuming a particular mini PC or other model is suitable. A local server gives you control and may make use of existing hardware, but it depends on your electricity, internet connection, and the machine staying available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse a hosted server
A hosted machine can avoid relying on a computer and home connection, but check the provider’s policies, available bandwidth, and ongoing service cost before choosing one. No particular provider, bandwidth economics, uptime figure, or hosting price is established here; verify those details directly with the provider.

Decide whether the source is live or prerecorded
For prerecorded footage, the encoder must be able to read the media and repeat or advance it as intended. For emulator or console capture, the source must remain active and deliver a continuous audio-and-video feed. These workflows may need different capture and encoding configuration. Do not assume a file-loop option or a complete unattended pipeline works until you have validated it with your chosen software and source.
Prepare YouTube and create the broadcast
- Verify channel eligibility. Confirm that the channel is verified and that it has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. If livestreaming access is unavailable, resolve that before configuring the server.
- Set up an encoder broadcast in YouTube. Use YouTube’s encoder streaming workflow and Live Control Room to create or configure the live broadcast. YouTube models a broadcast as the video event and a stream as the encoder feed that carries media to it.
- Copy the stream key into the encoder securely. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, put it in a public repository, or expose it in logs or screenshots. Use the stream settings provided for your broadcast rather than reusing a key you cannot account for.
- Choose the ongoing-broadcast arrangement. YouTube’s API documentation describes a 24/7 feed that remains live while a second broadcast is created from the same feed; after the second broadcast completes, the encoder continues transmitting for the ongoing broadcast. This demonstrates a persistent-broadcast model, not a promise that any channel’s feed will remain uninterrupted.
- Confirm the encoder is connected and inspect Live Control Room. Check the incoming stream and health indications before treating the broadcast as ready for viewers.
Set encoder output for YouTube
YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. The figures below are YouTube’s 2026 recommendations, not independent performance measurements or a guarantee of picture quality or uptime. Match the values to the chosen codec and frame rate, then test with the actual source and uplink.

| H.264 output | YouTube-recommended bitrate | Keyframe interval |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
- Rate control: Use CBR, which YouTube recommends.
- Frame rate: YouTube recommends up to 60 fps. Keep the output consistent with your source and what the server can encode reliably.
- Resolution and bitrate: The table gives the specific 1080p H.264 recommendations available here. Do not apply those two bitrate figures as universal settings for other resolutions or codecs.
- Protocol: Choose RTMPS where supported and use the ingest details provided for the broadcast.
- Stream-copy or transcode: If the source already matches the desired output, copying the encoded media may reduce compute work; transcoding changes the media and requires enough encoder capacity. This is implementation guidance, not a tested performance result. Test the exact pipeline and inspect the output.
Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Run a speed test from the server’s network. Check that the actual uplink can sustain the selected stream settings, with room for normal network variation.
- Run a representative test stream. Use the intended footage, audio, resolution, frame rate, and encoder path. A static menu screen is not a useful substitute for testing gameplay with motion and sound.
- Watch the feed in Live Control Room. Check that YouTube receives the stream and that audio and video behave as expected. Look for buffering, dropped or unstable output, missing audio, and unexpected source transitions.
- Test the continuous-source behavior. If the plan is to loop a file or move through a playlist, let it run through the relevant transition. Verify that playback continues rather than stopping at the end of a file.
- Test the server process separately from the broadcast. Confirm how your host launches and supervises the encoder, where useful logs are kept, and how an operator can tell whether the source, encoder, or network has failed. Keep the stream key out of those logs.
- Make an explicit recovery plan. Decide who will check the stream and what to do if the host, source, network, or YouTube connection stops. The available FFmpeg background guidance does not establish automatic recovery from a YouTube or network failure; do not assume a process supervisor will reconnect correctly until you have tested that failure mode.
Keep the encoder process running safely
Continuous service depends on both the source and the encoder process continuing to run. FFmpeg documents the -nostdin option for background use so it does not check for console input and suspend the process. That addresses an interaction detail, not looping behavior, process supervision, reconnection, or uptime. Configure a process supervisor appropriate to your host, retain enough logs to diagnose failures, and redact the stream key from logs and configuration access. Validate restart and reconnection behavior with a controlled test rather than relying on an untested service-manager configuration.
If the stream source is an emulator or console capture, monitor that source as well as the encoder: a running encoder can still transmit a frozen image, silent audio, or an empty capture. If the source is a prerecorded file, confirm the intended repeat behavior in the selected media pipeline; no complete, tested infinite-loop command is established here.

Rights and YouTube enforcement can interrupt a healthy feed
Owning a game or having a license does not by itself establish that a continuous, unattended, unmodified stream is permitted. Check the current policy for each specific title and secure permission for separately owned music, characters, overlays, and other assets where needed. Avoid assuming that all retro gameplay is automatically cleared or that a permission covering gameplay also covers the soundtrack.
YouTube Help states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” YouTube says a detected match can replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the creator to stop; if the material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. Even licensed third-party content may trigger an interruption if the channel is not added to the rights holder’s Content ID allowlist. If the stream is archived, YouTube says Content ID claims on the archived video are made after the live stream ends.

- [Games need exclusions and runtimes, not malware]Some customers ask why our retro game drives can trigger Windows Security warnings. Many game files are older DLLs that Windows Defender sometimes flags as threats. They are not viruses or malware—just old or uncommon code causing false positives. We temporarily add them to the exclusion list so they aren't blocked, then re-enable Security to keep your PC protected. Many classic games also need legacy VC++ and DirectX runtimes, which modern Windows doesn't include by default. Installing them ensures compatibility and smooth play. Your safety matters to us—these are safe, standard steps for retro games.

Publisher rules are separate from YouTube’s detection process. For example, SEGA’s guidelines, last updated March 12, 2026, apply to individual users using its products through legitimate means and address SEGA-owned intellectual property; third-party rights need permission, and title-specific rules may take priority. The guidelines allow YouTube use in stated circumstances, but restrict some profit-driven use except for platform monetization functions and say posted videos should add new elements such as commentary or narration, subject to a stated console/software-function exception. A bare unattended gameplay loop may therefore be problematic under SEGA’s rules. Those conditions are SEGA-specific, not a rule for every publisher or game.
- List every game, soundtrack, overlay, and other asset in the feed.
- Check the relevant publisher’s current policy for the particular title and follow any title-specific terms.
- Obtain needed permissions and follow the rights holder’s Content ID allowlisting instructions when applicable.
- Do not treat a technically healthy encoder feed as proof that the content is cleared or will remain live.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | Channel eligibility, ingest settings, stream key, server connection | Recheck channel access, the broadcast’s ingest details, and the key configured in the encoder. Confirm the server can reach the selected ingest and inspect Live Control Room. |
| The picture buffers or drops frames | Uplink stability, selected bitrate, server encoding load | Run a speed test from the host, repeat a representative stream test, and verify the encoder can sustain the selected output. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations are starting points, not a guarantee for your connection. |
| Video works but sound is missing or wrong | Source audio selection, encoder audio configuration, test coverage | Check that the intended source audio is included and that the representative test includes sound. Inspect the received feed before leaving it unattended. |
| The feed stops at the end of a video | Loop or playlist behavior in the chosen pipeline | Test the end-of-file transition in advance and configure playback using the selected software’s verified behavior. Do not assume a loop setting works without observing a full transition. |
| The encoder process exits or stops producing useful video | Host supervision, source availability, logs | Check whether the source, encoder, or host failed; keep logs that help distinguish them without revealing the key. Test the configured restart procedure deliberately. |
| YouTube replaces, interrupts, or terminates the live feed | Third-party content match or rights enforcement | Check YouTube’s notice, identify the matched material, and address the rights issue or allowlisting requirement with the rights holder. Restarting the encoder alone does not resolve a rights restriction. |
