To loop recorded math lessons on YouTube Live with OBS, add one lesson as a looping Media Source or build an ordered playlist with a VLC Video source, then connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream using its server URL and stream key. Test the lesson, audio, and stream preview before going live. For a true 24/7 broadcast, your computer, OBS, power, and internet must stay available; a single stream longer than YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic-archive threshold may not be archived as one video.
Before you start: check YouTube Live access
Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio and confirm that your channel is verified and not restricted from streaming. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so complete this well before the broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create an encoder stream. Set its title, description, privacy, and schedule if desired, then copy the stream server URL and stream key. The key authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel: keep it private, and reset it if it is exposed.

OBS Media Source can play local files in formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. The VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed; OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Sources Guide and OBS Media Sources documentation.

Set up the lesson playback in OBS
- Create a scene. In OBS, add a scene for the lesson output. Set the canvas and output resolution to suit how viewers will read the writing and equations.
- For one lesson, add a Media Source. In the scene’s Sources panel, choose Add (+) > Media Source, create or select a source, and browse to the local lesson file. Enable Loop to repeat it. Check the source’s audio and video in the preview.
- For multiple lessons, add a VLC Video source. Install VLC first if needed, then choose Add (+) > VLC Video. Add the lesson files in the desired order and enable Loop Playlist. Confirm the source appears and plays correctly.
- Check the complete cycle. Play the source locally in OBS long enough to inspect lesson order, transitions, audio levels, and any end cards, pauses, or black gaps that will recur. For a clean sequence, use files edited to avoid long unintended silences or gaps.
Connect OBS to the YouTube stream
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube if it is offered, or configure the server URL and stream key copied from the Live Control Room.
- Apply the settings, then choose Start Streaming in OBS.
- Return to the Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. Use YouTube’s Go live control when the scheduled workflow requires it. Depending on the stream setup, YouTube also describes starting an encoder stream directly; follow the controls shown for your stream.
- Check that the public watch page is available and that the video and audio play as expected before leaving the broadcast unattended.
Follow YouTube’s encoder workflow if the Studio controls differ for your stream setup.
Choose output quality and test legibility
Match OBS output resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to YouTube’s current encoder settings table. Its recommended bitrates differ by resolution, frame rate, and codec—for example, 1080p at 30 fps and 1080p at 60 fps do not share one recommendation. Check the current table for the mode you actually use rather than relying on a bitrate copied from another setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion.

For recorded math instruction, clear equations and a stable picture usually matter more than a needlessly high frame rate. YouTube’s general streaming tips recommend leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Check upload capacity, not download speed, and test while other devices and applications use the connection as they normally would.

- Watch the public stream page, including on a mobile device, to check how the lesson appears to students.
- Monitor stream health and audio/video quality during the test.

Keep the broadcast running—and plan for interruptions
With OBS running locally, the computer, OBS, power, and internet connection all need to remain available. A computer sleep setting, restart, OBS crash, power loss, or network outage can interrupt the stream. Decide who will monitor it and what to do if the encoder stops; YouTube’s suggestions to check stream health and any configured backup encoder improve visibility but do not guarantee recovery from every failure.
Also plan what viewers should see if the lesson source ends, fails to load, or reaches a gap in the playlist. Test the full cycle before going live and keep a recovery plan for restarting OBS and reconnecting the encoder if needed. A local stream’s continuity depends on that local setup staying operational.

Will YouTube archive a 24-hour stream?
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24-hour session exceeds that stated condition, so do not assume it will be saved as one replay. If preserving a replay matters, consider shorter sessions or a separate local recording, then test the specific arrangement before relying on it. See YouTube’s encoder stream guidance.
Check rights, copyright, and monetization limits
Use only lesson recordings and included material—such as music, illustrations, and clips—for which you have the necessary rights to stream and archive. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match may lead to a placeholder, interruption, or termination. Even licensed third-party material may require the owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and its livestream terms.

YouTube’s encoder help says streams can be monetized if the channel is in the YouTube Partner Program. That does not establish that a particular channel qualifies, or that continuous playback of prerecorded lessons will qualify under current channel monetization policies. A 24/7 loop by itself is not a guarantee of monetization.
Common problems and fixes
- No incoming preview in YouTube Studio: Check that OBS is streaming to the intended YouTube account and that the server URL and stream key match the Live Control Room stream. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update OBS.
- VLC Video is missing or the playlist will not play: Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS; OBS documents a 64-bit VLC requirement for 64-bit OBS. Confirm that the lesson files are accessible and that Loop Playlist is enabled.
- Equations are hard to read: Review the source at the intended output size and adjust the video framing or output resolution. Test on a phone as well as the Studio preview.
- Video or audio is unstable: Check stream health, upload capacity, and whether other network use is consuming bandwidth. Match the bitrate to YouTube’s table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, and retain the recommended upload headroom.
- The stream stops when left alone: Check computer sleep and power settings, OBS status, and the internet connection. A local OBS setup cannot continue through a computer, power, or connection failure.
- A lesson or stream is interrupted for copyright: Review the material’s permissions and any Content ID requirements, including whether a rights holder must allowlist the channel.
- No single replay appears after a day-long broadcast: One continuous 24-hour session is outside YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic-archive condition. Use a tested shorter-session or separate-recording plan if a replay is required.
