To run a 24/7 YouTube radio stream with Switchboard Live, enable live streaming on your YouTube channel, create a Switchboard workflow and Stream Group, connect the YouTube destination, and send an encoder feed to Switchboard. Confirm the feed in the confidence monitor before starting the YouTube destination. For a continuous broadcast, plan separately for music rights, monitoring, local recording, and YouTube’s limits on long-stream archives.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream, with live streaming enabled.
- A Switchboard Live account and a workflow for the broadcast.
- An encoder—software or hardware—that can send a feed using a protocol supported by your Switchboard workflow.
- The stream URL and key for the Switchboard ingest, plus access to the YouTube channel you intend to connect.
- Permission for every recording and composition in the radio catalogue to be transmitted for the intended use.
Switchboard acts as the routing layer: your encoder sends one feed to Switchboard, and the service starts the connected destination or destinations. A Stream Group holds destination choices and broadcast details. Switchboard supports software and hardware encoders; dedicated hardware is optional, not a prerequisite. Switchboard Live Initial Setup documents the workflow and ingest setup.
Enable YouTube live streaming
Sign in to the YouTube channel that will host the radio stream and check its live-streaming access in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; the creator must be at least 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned launch. Eligibility checks and Studio labels can change, so use the current instructions in YouTube’s live-streaming help.
Create a Switchboard workflow and connect YouTube
- Create or open a workflow. Sign in to Switchboard and create a workflow for the radio broadcast, or open the workflow you will use.
- Create a Stream Group. Add a Stream Group for this broadcast and enter its title and description. It will collect the destination choices and broadcast controls.
- Add YouTube as a destination. In the Stream Group, choose the option to add or connect a destination, select YouTube, and authenticate the channel that should carry the stream. Switchboard says a connected destination can be reused across Stream Groups. See Switchboard’s YouTube connection instructions.
If you are setting up a scheduled YouTube event as a custom RTMP destination instead, copy the event’s YouTube stream URL and stream key into the corresponding URL and key fields in Switchboard. Check which value goes in each field; do not reverse them.

Configure the encoder to send video to Switchboard
- Copy the Switchboard ingest details. In the workflow, find its ingest Stream URL and Stream Key. Keep the key private: it lets an encoder send to the associated workflow.
- Choose a supported ingest protocol. Switchboard documents RTMP(S) and SRT. Its setup guide describes RTMP as widely supported and recommended for most users, RTMPS as encrypted RTMP, and SRT as a low-latency, resilient option for unstable networks. Choose one your encoder supports and that fits your network; protocol choice does not remove the need to test the actual feed.
- Enter the values in your encoder. In the encoder’s server or URL field, enter the Switchboard Stream URL; in its stream-key field, enter the Switchboard Stream Key. These are Switchboard ingest details, not the YouTube destination’s custom RTMP details.
- Set the encoder output. Switchboard’s initial setup recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and 30 or 60 FPS. Treat these as Switchboard recommendations, not universal requirements for every encoder, network, or YouTube profile. Set resolution and bitrate to a profile your encoder and connection can sustain, and verify the output in the test below. Software encoding can be a sensible starting point if you already have a suitable computer and inputs. Consider hardware only if your input, unattended-operation, power, network, or budget needs justify a dedicated device; the cited setup supports either type and does not establish a best model.
Test the feed, then start the YouTube destination
- Start sending the encoder feed to Switchboard. This connection test alone does not start the YouTube destination.
- In Switchboard’s confidence monitor, confirm that video appears and the status changes to Receiving. Resolve a missing feed before proceeding.
- Use the destination control to start YouTube. Then choose View Stream for the destination and confirm the intended public or private YouTube page is actually live.
- Check audio, picture, and the live page before leaving the setup unattended.
Plan continuity, recording, and music rights
Do not rely on YouTube for a complete 24-hour archive
YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as archives at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. If a recording matters, enable a local recording or other backup and plan how to preserve programme segments; a single uninterrupted YouTube VOD is not guaranteed. Monitor the real broadcast path
The setup documentation describes sending a feed and starting a destination; it does not establish an uptime guarantee or a particular automatic-recovery arrangement. Monitor both the incoming feed and the YouTube destination, and test your playback and recovery procedure before relying on the stream unattended.
Clear the catalogue for continuous transmission
Confirm that the station has permission for every recording and composition, including continuous public transmission and any retained or monetized recording. YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service do not grant you the rights to a particular catalogue. The required permissions depend on the tracks, rights holders, territories, licence terms, and intended use; do not assume a track is cleared merely because it is available online. YouTube’s archive guidance also recommends keeping a local backup, but a backup does not resolve music-rights questions.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
