Short answer: You can use a Linode (Akamai Compute Instance) as an RTMP relay between OBS and YouTube, but Akamai’s published relay guide does not show OBS running unattended on the Linode. In that documented setup, OBS runs on your own computer, so that computer and its internet connection still need to stay on. If you specifically need OBS itself to encode continuously on a Linode VM, the official material reviewed here does not establish a dependable headless setup, instance size, or restart procedure; those parts need testing on your chosen VM before you rely on them.
Choose the architecture before you configure anything
“OBS with Linode” can mean three different things. Only one is covered by Akamai’s RTMP tutorial, and it is not the same as running OBS on the server 24/7.
| Setup | What runs where | Does it keep broadcasting if your computer is off? |
|---|---|---|
| OBS direct to YouTube | OBS runs on your computer and sends the stream to YouTube. | No. Your computer, OBS session, power, and connection must remain available. |
| OBS through a Linode RTMP relay | OBS runs on your computer and sends video to an RTMP server on Linode; the relay forwards it to YouTube. | No. The relay is cloud-hosted, but the documented workflow still depends on local OBS sending video to it. |
| OBS running directly on Linode | The VM would need to host OBS, its display/encoding environment, and the continuous broadcast process. | Potentially, but the official sources reviewed do not establish a supported unattended recipe, sizing, or recovery behavior for this arrangement. |
Akamai’s RTMP guide describes the second arrangement: a Linux VM hosts an RTMP relay and OBS is the client on the streamer’s own system. Its separate LiveKit guide also places OBS on the local streaming machine. Neither guide validates OBS itself running continuously and headlessly on a generic Linode instance.
Check YouTube and prepare the live event
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube also sets a minimum age of 16 for live streaming.
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to use Live Control Room, then create or schedule the stream and open its stream settings. YouTube’s encoder workflow is based on the values shown for that event.
- Copy the ingest endpoint and key from Live Control Room. Use the stream URL and stream key displayed there. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when available; YouTube’s RTMPS instructions explain revealing the secure endpoint using the lock control when the ordinary RTMP address is shown by default.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password. Do not put it in public screenshots, article examples, logs, shell history, or a shared configuration file. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder or relay configuration.
Do not hard-code an ingest hostname based on an old tutorial. Use the endpoint currently presented for your own YouTube event.

Set OBS to a YouTube-compatible profile
For direct ingest, enter the endpoint and key in OBS’s stream settings. If the OBS YouTube service preset offers the secure endpoint you intend to use, select it; otherwise use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room. The exact labels can vary by OBS version, so verify the active server address rather than assuming the preset chose RTMPS.
Set the output for the actual resolution and frame rate you plan to broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS, CBR bitrate mode, up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval; the keyframe interval must not exceed four seconds.

| H.264 profile | YouTube bitrate guidance | Other settings to apply |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 10 Mbps recommended | CBR; two-second keyframes recommended, no more than four seconds |
| Other resolutions or frame rates | Use YouTube’s bitrate range for that specific profile; a single bitrate is not appropriate for every format. | Keep the same protocol, CBR, frame-rate ceiling, and keyframe interval requirements in view. |
The 1080p30 values above are YouTube’s published H.264 guidance, not a guarantee that a particular Linode can encode or deliver that profile. YouTube advises running an upload speed test and leaving bandwidth headroom: its streaming tips recommend 20% above the total bitrate in use. Include any other outbound traffic and, if you configure a backup stream, account for its bitrate as well. A VM’s advertised network capacity should not be treated as guaranteed throughput for a sustained broadcast.
Use the documented Linode relay pattern
Akamai’s RTMP-server tutorial is an Ubuntu-based relay example. It installs an RTMP server on a Linode and configures OBS on a separate local computer to send the stream through that relay toward YouTube. The tutorial is based on Ubuntu 20.04; check the current operating-system and package instructions before applying it to a newly created instance rather than assuming every older command remains current.

- Create the Compute Instance. Select a Linux distribution supported by the current Akamai documentation, then secure and update the VM according to the current provider and distribution guidance. The guide’s note that 1 GB is sufficient applies only to its single-stream relay example; it does not size a VM for OBS encoding.
- Install and configure the RTMP relay. Follow Akamai’s RTMP-server tutorial for the server installation and relay configuration. Configure its upstream destination using the current YouTube endpoint and the stream key associated with your event. Do not expose the key in publicly accessible configuration, logs, or screenshots.
- Point local OBS at the relay. In OBS, use the relay’s ingest address and the key or path required by the relay configuration. The OBS output must match the relay’s expected format and bitrate. This is the local-computer-to-relay leg; the exact address and stream name depend on the server configuration you install.
- Start the event and verify both legs. Start streaming in OBS, confirm that the relay is receiving the feed, then check the preview and stream-health indicators in YouTube Live Control Room. A healthy connection to the relay alone does not prove YouTube is receiving or presenting the stream correctly.
This pattern adds a server to maintain and another network leg to troubleshoot. It does not make the broadcast independent of your home computer: if local OBS stops sending, the relay has no new video to forward.
If you intend to run OBS on the Linode itself
Do not treat the relay tutorial as instructions for this setup. OBS’s Linux installation information covers Linux installation and graphics prerequisites, including OpenGL 3.3 or later and an X server recommendation for some features. Those details make the graphics and session arrangement important, but they do not prove that every virtual-display or headless configuration is unsupported. The reviewed official guidance does not provide a validated system-service recipe for continuous OBS operation on a Linode.

Before relying on direct OBS-on-VM encoding, validate all of the following on the exact instance and operating-system release you plan to use:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Whether OBS can run reliably in the VM’s intended display/session arrangement, including after logout or reboot.
- Whether the chosen encoder and instance sustain the required resolution, frame rate, and bitrate without overload. No suitable VM size or performance benchmark is established here.
- How OBS starts after a reboot, what happens when it exits or the network drops, and how you will detect and recover from a stalled process.
- Whether outbound network capacity remains adequate for the whole broadcast, with YouTube’s recommended headroom and allowance for any other traffic.
- How the YouTube key is stored securely and how you will rotate it if exposed.
Until those checks pass, the relay architecture is the one supported by Akamai’s published OBS/RTMP example; direct OBS encoding on Linode should be treated as an experiment rather than a ready-made 24/7 recipe.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Confirm that Live Control Room receives a preview and that stream health is acceptable before announcing the broadcast.
- Open the public watch page and check playback on a second device, such as a phone. Preview in the control room does not replace checking the viewer-facing page.
- Test the failure and restart procedure you intend to use. YouTube suggests testing a backup encoder by stopping the primary or disconnecting its network; this is an operational check, not proof that a single OBS process self-recovers.
- If you record locally, verify that the recording file exists and plays. A live stream reaching YouTube does not by itself verify a local archive.
- For a 24/7 broadcast, monitor the process, VM, relay (if used), and YouTube stream health. A long-running process should not be considered reliable merely because the first preview worked.
Know the YouTube archive limit for long broadcasts
YouTube’s encoder setup page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24-hour broadcast exceeds that stated window, so do not assume YouTube will provide one complete VOD of the entire stream. The cited guidance does not specify how every longer stream is handled; if retaining the full program matters, plan and test a separate recording and verify its files rather than relying on a single automatic archive.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube never shows a preview: Check that the event is live or correctly scheduled, that OBS is sending to the current server URL, and that the associated stream key is correct. If using a relay, verify reception at the relay and its upstream connection separately.
- The picture buffers or stream health degrades: Compare actual upload capacity with the total configured bitrate and keep the recommended 20% headroom. Reduce output bitrate or resolution if the available sustained capacity is insufficient; do not compensate by changing a bitrate without checking the matching resolution and frame rate.
- The relay is reachable but YouTube is not receiving video: Investigate the relay’s upstream destination, event key, and forwarding configuration. A working OBS-to-relay connection validates only the first leg.
- OBS stops after logout or reboot on a VM: The reviewed sources do not provide a verified unattended service configuration. Revisit the display/session setup and startup/restart design, then test a reboot and process failure before depending on it.
- The VM cannot sustain the selected profile: The 1 GB figure in Akamai’s tutorial refers to its single-stream relay example, not OBS encoding. Select and test an instance for the actual encoder workload rather than extrapolating from that relay note.
- The full 24-hour VOD is missing or incomplete: The under-12-hour automatic-archive statement does not promise a complete archive for a longer broadcast. Check any independent recording you configured.
Or let it run in the cloud
