Use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room with a software or hardware encoder: prepare the audiobook program, create a stream, connect the encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and key, preview the feed, and start broadcasting. Before launch, confirm the rights for every element, mark child-directed content as Made for Kids, and plan for sessions shorter than 12 hours if YouTube archives matter. A single uninterrupted 24-hour stream may not be captured as an archive.

Check channel eligibility before planning a launch

YouTube requires the channel to be verified and to have had no livestream restriction in the preceding 90 days. The person livestreaming must be at least 16 years old. First-time livestreaming access can take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it well before the planned launch.

Clear the audiobook and visual rights

“Original” is not, by itself, proof that every part of a production is cleared for worldwide livestreaming and archiving. Track the rights for the written story, recording, narrator’s performance, music, illustrations, cover art, and any other third-party material. Copyright ownership and licensing can depend on contributor agreements and local law; a commissioned asset is not automatically cleared for every use.

YouTube requires creators to have the rights needed for the live and archived material they provide. Its live systems scan streams for matches to third-party content; a match can replace the picture, interrupt the broadcast, or end the stream. If you have a license for third-party material, check whether the rights owner needs to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for live use. The stream must also comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines.

Choose a software or hardware encoder

YouTube supports both software and hardware encoders. A software encoder runs on a computer; a hardware encoder is a dedicated device. YouTube describes professional-grade hardware as an option for higher-production-value events, but dedicated hardware is not required to begin.

Consideration Software encoder Hardware encoder
Setup Configure encoding software and keep the computer stable while it runs. Configure a dedicated device and its supported inputs and features.
Cost decision You may be able to use a computer you already own. A hardware purchase may be relevant, but it is optional.
What to weigh Existing computer, automation, monitoring, and budget. Production needs, automation, inputs, redundancy, and budget.

YouTube does not establish one universally best encoder approach for a 24/7 audiobook channel or endorse a particular model for it. For either approach, consider connection stability, upload capacity, recovery procedures, monitoring, and whether you can keep a local recording if the live feed fails.

Prepare the program and internet connection

Assemble the show

Prepare the audiobook audio and the visuals that will accompany it, such as cover art or a visual loop. Have the stream title, description, and audience setting ready. If you are building a playlist, check its order and playback transitions before using it for a continuous broadcast.

Allow enough upload bandwidth

Your available upload bandwidth must exceed the combined bitrate of the primary and backup feeds. YouTube recommends about 20% additional headroom above that combined bitrate. On a shared connection, other devices and users can reduce the capacity available to the encoder.

Choose resolution, bitrate, and keyframe settings in line with the encoder’s options and YouTube’s current guidance for the selected streaming configuration. The official guidance summarized here does not specify a universal bitrate or keyframe interval for this audiobook use case, so do not treat one fixed setting as suitable for every resolution, encoder, and connection. Check the encoder’s output and Live Control Room preview before going public.

Create the stream in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Create, then Go Live to enter Live Control Room.
  2. Create a stream or use Manage to schedule one. Set its title, description, and visibility.
  3. Set the audience to Made for Kids when the stories are directed at children.
  4. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: keep it private, and reset it if it is exposed.
  5. Start the encoder and wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room. Check the preview before starting the public livestream.

Set the audience accurately for child-directed stories

YouTube expects creators to select the audience for their content. Stories intended to target children are likely to be Made for Kids, and the creator is responsible for making the accurate selection. Set the live stream audience in Live Control Room rather than assuming a channel-wide setting covers each stream.

Made for Kids livestreams lose features including live chat, chat donations, comments, reminder notifications, and personalized advertising. Do not plan viewer interaction or reminders around features that will not be available on the stream. YouTube says personalized ads are not served on kids content, which may reduce revenue for some creators; that does not establish a particular channel’s monetization eligibility or earnings.

Test the broadcast and operate it continuously

  1. Set up the encoder well before the intended launch and run an unlisted test.
  2. Confirm the stream appears in Live Control Room preview and check the watch page from a separate device, including a phone.
  3. Listen for clean, continuous narration and verify that the visuals display as intended. Check the local recording if you are making one.
  4. Test the recovery or failover procedure before relying on it. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover, but its guidance does not certify a particular 24/7 uptime design.
  5. Monitor audio and video quality while the stream is running, and have a restart plan if the encoder, connection, or stream fails.

Plan sessions around YouTube’s archive and DVR limits

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is not a guarantee that every shorter stream will be available indefinitely. If preserving broadcasts matters, end each session before the 12-hour threshold, start the next session using a schedule you have tested, and keep a local recording as a backup.

DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams. Do not promise viewers a complete archive or a reliable rewind experience from one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast. Session breaks also create a brief interruption, so plan them around the listening experience.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the audiobook to keep streaming without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos to a YouTube channel from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not stream from a camera or to other platforms.

  • Nothing has to stay running at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
  • Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers.
  • StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.

Estimate upload time and check copyright before launch

Use StreamNeo’s upload-time calculator to estimate how long uploading your source files may take, and its copyright safety checklist to review rights issues before broadcasting. An estimate is not a substitute for checking the actual connection or securing permission for every asset.
