You can run a continuous YouTube livestream with an encoder or a cloud streaming service, but going live does not automatically add a donation button. First check that both your channel and intended nonprofit qualify for YouTube Giving. Then schedule the stream, attach it to a published fundraiser, test the broadcast, and make a separate local recording if you need a replay: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
Check YouTube Giving eligibility before planning the fundraiser
There are two separate eligibility checks: one for your channel as the fundraiser creator and another for the charity receiving donations. Availability varies by country or region, so check your own YouTube Studio account rather than relying on the nonprofit’s location alone.
Channel requirements
- The channel must be based in a location where YouTube Giving is available.
- It must have at least 10,000 subscribers and be in the YouTube Partner Program.
- It must not be designated as made for kids.
YouTube notes that some channels may see access outside those criteria. The practical check is whether Giving appears in YouTube Studio. You can also check the channel’s livestream eligibility: YouTube requires channel verification and no livestream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.

YouTube’s nonprofit guidance says an eligible recipient must be a U.S.-registered 501(c)(3) public charity, opt into online fundraising through GuideStar, and meet Google for Nonprofits and YouTube policy requirements. A creator must request a nonprofit that is missing from the selection tool; review may take up to five business days. Confirm the intended charity is selectable before you announce the fundraiser. Choose how to keep the stream running
For a staff-operated broadcast, an encoder sends your video and audio to YouTube Live. You can use software on a computer or an optional dedicated hardware encoder. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware for higher-production streams, but it also supports software encoders; choose hardware only if production complexity, reliability needs, or separation from a staff computer justifies it. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the workflow and links to compatible encoders.

Schedule and test the YouTube livestream
- Verify the channel and activate livestreaming. Confirm there is no current livestream restriction and allow up to 24 hours for initial activation.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create a stream. For an encoder workflow, copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s YouTube Live settings. Treat the key like a password: do not share it publicly, and reset it if exposed.
- Configure the encoder for your source and network. Use settings supported by your encoder and source, then test the exact resolution, audio, bitrate, and keyframe settings in the Live Control Room preview. The cited YouTube guidance does not prescribe one universal bitrate or resolution for every source, so use the settings appropriate to your content and connection rather than assuming one fixed profile will fit all.
- Leave bandwidth headroom. YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth beyond the total outgoing stream bitrate. Include both primary and backup streams in the total if you use them. Its streaming tips explain the recommendation.
- Test before going public. Use a private or unlisted test to check the Live Control Room preview, audio and video, the public watch page, and mobile playback. Test backup-encoder failover if available. Plan who will monitor the stream, respond to outages, review content, and moderate chat.
Create the fundraiser and attach the scheduled stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Earn > Giving and choose Create a fundraiser. You can also start from Live Control Room’s advanced settings.
- Select an eligible nonprofit, or request the missing charity. Add the fundraiser title and description; collaborators, a goal, and a duration are optional.
- Add the scheduled livestream to the fundraiser and publish it.
- Check the fundraiser’s start date. The donate button appears after that date; simply starting a livestream does not activate YouTube Giving. See Google for Nonprofits’ setup instructions.
Know what viewers and organizers will see
When live chat is enabled, YouTube Giving’s Live Chat Donations button appears in chat. If chat is disabled, the donate button can appear next to or below the stream. Viewers can choose whether to display their username in chat. The Live Control Room Viewer Activity Widget can show donations in real time.
YouTube says adding a fundraiser does not affect ads. However, Super Chat and Super Stickers are disabled on streams using Live Chat Donations, and creators cannot use members-only live chat with the donate button. YouTube also says it pays transaction fees so that 100% of an eligible contribution goes to the nonprofit. Google works with Network for Good to collect and distribute donations; Network for Good has legal control of donations once collected. Distributions are typically monthly, while totals below $10 are distributed annually. Plan for archives, rights, and continuous operation
Do not rely on a 24-hour replay
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, record locally as well. You may consider planned sessions shorter than 12 hours to create manageable broadcasts, but YouTube does not promise that segmentation will solve every archive or continuity issue. Clear every item in the playlist
Make sure the nonprofit owns or has permission to rebroadcast every image, video, audio track, and other material in the stream. A license for ordinary playback may not cover livestreaming or replay. Avoid third-party music or media unless the organization has the necessary rights, and keep the broadcast consistent with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.

Assign operational responsibility
- Name someone responsible for monitoring the stream and another person who can take over if needed.
- Decide how staff will respond to an encoder, network, or YouTube interruption, and test any backup recovery process.
- Set chat moderation rules and ensure the team can review the material that will play in a continuous loop.
- Keep a local recording and a secure copy of the stream key. YouTube’s published guidance does not establish a particular uptime guarantee for a continuous broadcast.
