Use OBS Studio to assemble your story stream from scenes and sources, then send it to YouTube Live Control Room using the stream URL and key YouTube provides. You can configure OBS to loop one file or a playlist and switch between a welcome screen, story, break screen, and closing scene. That setup is not, by itself, a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 broadcasting: plan for monitoring, reconnection, and YouTube’s archive boundary before you promise a continuous channel.
Before you build the stream
Check YouTube live access
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its current guidance also says a person going live must be at least 16 years old. Check the channel’s access in YouTube Studio before configuring OBS; eligibility problems cannot be fixed by changing an OBS setting.
Confirm rights to the story materials
Check the rights for every story text, translation, illustration, music bed, and recording you plan to broadcast, including the specific edition and territories where you intend to stream. Credit is not a substitute for permission. If your plan includes monetization, treat that as a separate review: permission to use a work does not by itself establish that a repetitive or reused-content format qualifies for YouTube monetization. Review current YouTube Partner Program requirements for your format before relying on ad revenue.
Recommended Free Tools
Plan audience settings and interaction
Set the audience accurately in YouTube Live Control Room; do not rely on automated detection to decide whether a stream is made for kids. If it is Made for Kids, YouTube disables live chat, live chat donations, Super Chat, and personalized ads. Contextual ads may appear. Comments, cards and end screens, notifications, and some other channel features are also restricted, so design the show without depending on those tools or personalized-ad income.

Build an OBS scene collection for a story stream
Create scenes for each part of the program
In OBS, create a scene collection and add scenes such as Welcome, Story, Break, and Closing. Add the sources each scene needs: for example, an image or title card, text, and a media source for the story recording. Arrange sources in the Sources list so that overlays appear above the background or video they belong to. Preview each scene and check that the text remains legible against its background.
Set scene transitions
OBS includes built-in Fade and Cut transitions. Choose the transition in the transition controls and set its duration where applicable. A Cut changes immediately; a Fade blends between scenes over the chosen duration. For a quiet story format, a brief Fade can soften a change between the welcome card and story, while a Cut can avoid an unintended pause. Test each transition with the actual scenes and audio so that a change does not obscure narration or leave a blank frame.

Studio Mode lets you prepare a scene in preview before sending it to the live output. Use it to check the next card or story source before taking it live, especially when a person will be supervising scene changes.
Choose a loop method
- One recording: Add an OBS Media Source and enable its Loop option. Check what viewers will see and hear when the file reaches its end and starts again.
- A playlist: Use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for this source to work. Check playlist order, durations, and transitions between files before streaming.
Loop controls handle playback, not every failure mode. Test file boundaries, audio continuity, and scene visibility; do not assume that a loop setting proves a stream can run unattended for a full day.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room
- Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live. Create a stream or schedule one in Live Control Room, following the prompts for the title, visibility, and audience.
- Copy the encoder details. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the stream you created.
- Enter them in OBS. Open Settings > Stream, select the applicable YouTube service option, and enter or connect the stream credentials as the interface allows. If OBS presents server and key fields, use the matching URL and key from Live Control Room.
- Keep the key private. Treat the stream key as a credential that allows an encoder to send video to your stream. Do not publish it or include it in an on-screen source. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Check the preview before going live. Start the encoder and confirm that YouTube receives the intended picture and sound. Use the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators before making the broadcast public.
Choose video and audio output settings
Match the encoder to YouTube and your connection
In YouTube’s encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS, supported video codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; audio can use AAC or MP3. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no longer than four seconds. It recommends RTMPS where supported.
In OBS, review Settings > Output for encoder and bitrate controls, and Settings > Video for canvas and output resolution and frame rate. Choose a resolution and bitrate supported by YouTube’s current encoder table and that your computer and reliable upload connection can sustain. Do not select the maximum quality simply because it is available: the stream must remain stable on the connection you will actually use. Use YouTube’s table for the exact combination of resolution, frame rate, and bitrate rather than guessing a target.

Test the complete program
Make a private or unlisted test with representative narration, music if used, motion, and scene changes. Check that speech is clear, that picture and sound remain synchronized, and that the transition and loop boundaries behave as intended. Watch YouTube’s preview and stream health, and monitor the broadcast rather than assuming that an encoder’s “streaming” status means viewers are receiving a good feed. OBS’s Quick Start guidance also recommends a short test before the first broadcast.

YouTube’s setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish how to keep one broadcast running continuously across a 24-hour day, nor does OBS’s loop feature certify uninterrupted operation. A scene collection and repeated file can keep content playing while OBS and the computer are running, but power loss, a computer or application fault, network interruption, or an issue at YouTube can still interrupt the broadcast.
- Assign a person to check stream health, picture, and audio on a schedule, including overnight coverage if the channel is meant to be always on.
- Write down who can restart OBS or reconnect the encoder, where the stream key is managed, and how to verify the YouTube preview after a restart.
- Plan how the channel will handle the under-12-hour archive behavior. Do not assume that a single stream can remain live indefinitely; test your intended start, stop, and restart workflow with the channel before relying on it.
- Run a longer supervised test before advertising continuous availability. The official setup instructions do not certify a particular OBS computer or configuration for uninterrupted 24-hour service.
Troubleshoot common problems
YouTube does not show an incoming preview
- Confirm OBS is using the server URL and key for the stream currently open in Live Control Room, not credentials from another scheduled stream.
- Check that the encoder is started and that the key has not been changed or exposed. Replace an exposed key in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Give YouTube time to receive the encoder feed, then inspect the preview and stream-health status before going live.
The picture freezes or YouTube reports poor stream health
- Check the computer and connection while OBS is streaming; compare the configured output with the reliable upload capacity available at that location.
- Reduce the output demand by choosing a lower supported resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, then retest. Use YouTube’s current settings table for a compatible target.
- Check whether other network use or computer load is interfering, and repeat the test under the conditions expected during the broadcast.
The story is silent, black, or stops at the end
- In OBS, verify that the intended scene is live and that the media source is visible, unmuted, and using the correct file.
- For a single file, check the Media Source’s Loop option. For a playlist, verify VLC is installed, the VLC Video source is present, and Loop Playlist is enabled.
- Play through a full file boundary while monitoring the YouTube preview. Fix the source or playlist before making the broadcast public.
A transition shows the wrong scene or an unintended blank
- Check which scene is in the live output and which is only in Studio Mode preview before activating the transition.
- Inspect the source order and visibility in the destination scene, then preview the transition at its configured duration.
- Test the exact scene sequence again with its audio before resuming the public broadcast.
