You can send a continuous YouTube live stream from a Windows PC by creating an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, entering its stream URL and key in an encoder such as OBS, and keeping the PC awake while it runs. This is a best-effort setup, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service: YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so keep a local recording if you need an archive.
Before you start: check eligibility and plan for the archive limit
YouTube says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and meet its minimum age requirement of 16 to live stream. Confirm that live streaming is available for the channel before configuring the PC.
There is an important distinction between keeping a stream live and having YouTube save it afterward. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its archive guidance warns that “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on very long streams. Do not rely on a single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast being saved as a replay. Record locally as a backup, and treat continuous operation as best-effort.

Create a new stream or schedule one. Set its title, visibility and other details for the intended broadcast.
-
Open the stream’s settings in Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL (also called the server URL) and stream key. YouTube describes the key as the password and address that allow an encoder to send the feed.
-
Keep the stream key private. Anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.

Connect a Windows encoder and go live
-
Open your encoder, such as OBS, and find its streaming settings. If it offers a YouTube service preset, select it; otherwise choose the option to enter a custom server and paste the YouTube stream URL into the server field.
-
Paste the stream key into the encoder’s stream-key field. Check that the selected video and audio sources are the ones you intend to broadcast. A webcam is optional: use one only if you want a camera image; an encoder can also send other camera, screen, gameplay or pre-produced sources.
-
Start streaming in the encoder. Wait for the feed preview to appear in Live Control Room, then check that the picture and sound are correct before selecting Go live in YouTube.

Choose encoder settings that match your PC and connection
Do not choose a bitrate simply because it is a commonly quoted setting. The appropriate range depends on resolution, frame rate and codec, and the PC must be able to encode the chosen settings reliably. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, constant bitrate encoding, and up to 60 fps. These are supported choices, not a guarantee that every Windows computer can handle each one.
- Ingest protocol: YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate and upload: YouTube says the total streaming bitrate must fit within available upload capacity and recommends leaving 20% headroom. For example, reserve roughly one-fifth of measured upload capacity rather than assigning all of it to the stream.
- Test under realistic conditions: Run a supervised test with motion and audio similar to the planned content. Check stream health and adjust resolution, frame rate or bitrate if the feed is unstable.

Set the plugged-in sleep timeout so the PC will not sleep during the broadcast. Screen-off timing is a separate option; set it according to whether you need the display lit.
Menu wording and available options can differ by device. Check the settings while the PC is plugged in, since battery and plugged-in behavior may be configured separately.
If you are streaming from a laptop
Many laptops sleep when their lids close. In Control Panel, go to Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does. Leave the lid open or set the plugged-in lid action so closing it will not put the laptop to sleep. Make sure the machine can still ventilate adequately during a long run.

Prepare for interruptions and troubleshoot common failures
A PC staying awake does not ensure a continuous feed. Encoder errors, Windows updates, network loss, power loss and device heat can interrupt a stream. Test the entire setup while supervised and keep a local recording if the material matters.
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The preview does not appear in Live Control Room | The encoder is not sending a feed, or its server URL or stream key is incorrect. | Confirm the encoder is actively streaming, then compare its server and key fields with the current values in Live Control Room. Reset an exposed key and replace it in the encoder. |
| The PC stops sending after a period of inactivity | Windows or the laptop’s lid action put the device to sleep. | Review the plugged-in sleep timeout and, on a laptop, the lid-close action. |
| Stream health reports problems or playback is unstable | The upload connection may not sustain the chosen total bitrate, or the PC may not encode the selected settings consistently. | Check the stream-health messages, leave the recommended upload headroom, and test a lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate if necessary. |
| The live stream ends unexpectedly | Network or power loss, an encoder failure, an update or a device-specific issue may have stopped the feed. | Check the PC, encoder and connection, then restart the encoder and confirm a new preview before going live again. The official guidance does not promise continuous availability for a consumer PC or YouTube ingest. |
| No replay appears after a very long stream | YouTube may not capture a stream exceeding 12 hours. | Use the local recording as the archive where available. YouTube’s guidance does not guarantee capture of a stream beyond that threshold. |
