To keep a local radio channel live on YouTube around the clock, route the station’s audio into an encoder, pair it with a video signal, and send the feed to YouTube Live. First confirm the channel is eligible and secure rights for the online simulcast: permission to broadcast music on terrestrial radio does not automatically cover YouTube. Then test the complete setup and plan for power, internet, encoder, and copyright interruptions.
Before setup: check channel eligibility and music rights
Confirm the channel can livestream
YouTube’s encoder workflow requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube also sets a minimum age of 16 for livestreaming. Check the channel’s current status in YouTube Studio before investing time in the setup; eligibility and platform rules can change. See YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance.
Clear the online simulcast, not just the radio broadcast
Make an inventory of music and other third-party material in the station’s output. Confirm that permissions cover the actual works and sound recordings, online non-interactive streaming or simulcast, and intended territories. Musical works and sound recordings are distinct categories under the Copyright Act, so clearance for one should not be assumed to cover the other. Consult the Copyright Act, 1957 and seek guidance from the relevant rights holders or representatives.
IPRS lists an Internet Non-Interactive (INTB) category and its published tariff expressly includes internet retransmission or simulcast of an FM station. PPL says its on-ground licence does not permit digital use, while its radio broadcast licence concerns terrestrial FM and community radio. Therefore, do not assume an on-ground or terrestrial-radio permission covers YouTube. Review IPRS licensing categories and PPL India’s tariffs and FAQs for the relevant scope.

The IPRS INTB tariff published in April 2025 and effective from 1 April 2025 states a minimum annual royalty/licence fee of Rs. 12,00,000 for a single channel. It also states the greater of 15% of gross revenue or a per-stream rate, with the per-stream value not less than 10 paisa; its definition of gross revenue includes subscription, sponsorship, advertising, or recurring-charge revenue, less taxes and specified payment-service fees. These are figures from that tariff, not a universal fee for every local station. Confirm current applicability, rights scope, and terms directly with IPRS before relying on them. See the IPRS INTB tariff.
Choose how to produce and send the feed
YouTube’s encoder method is designed for feeds that use overlays or external audio hardware. A station’s program output needs to be combined with video—a station-branded still or a rights-cleared visual loop, for example—because the encoder publishes an audio-video stream. The NIC webcast service likewise describes an encoder publishing an audio-video feed.

Choose an operating arrangement that matches the station’s staffing and technical capacity:
- Station-operated computer and software encoder: staff can manage the feed locally, but the computer, encoder, network, and power need ongoing attention.
- Dedicated encoder or hosted playout: these may reduce dependence on a general-purpose workstation, but assess whether the arrangement accepts the station’s audio output, creates the needed video feed, and has a clear monitoring and restart process.
No specific device, software configuration, hosted vendor, or redundancy design is established here. Whatever you choose, confirm the audio connections, continuous-duty needs, maintenance skills, and recovery responsibilities before launch.

Set up the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and select the encoder workflow. Sign in to the station’s eligible channel, open the Live Control Room, and create or schedule the stream using the encoder option. YouTube’s current interface labels can change; follow the workflow shown in Studio.
- Copy the stream URL and key into the encoder. Enter YouTube’s destination details in the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it on air, publish it, or share it with people who do not need access.
- Connect the station audio and create the visual feed. Route the program output into the encoder, add a station-branded still or rights-cleared visual, and check the viewer-facing image. Confirm audio is present, at an appropriate level, and not distorted; decide how silence or a source interruption will be handled.
- Review the preview and stream health before going public. Start a controlled test with the actual encoder, audio path, visual, and network. Check the YouTube preview and Studio health information, then verify that a designated person can restart the feed and respond to alerts.
Prepare for Content ID matches and interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. Its Help guidance states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A licence alone does not guarantee that the stream will continue uninterrupted: YouTube says licensed content can still trigger an interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted by the content owner in Content ID.
Before launch, ask the relevant rights holders or representatives to allowlist the station’s channel where applicable. Keep a contact and escalation process for rights notices, and check YouTube Studio for restrictions or other notices if the stream stops. Allowlisting is a platform-handling step, not a substitute for obtaining the necessary rights.

Plan network, power, and recovery for 24/7 operation
Measure the station’s sustained upload capacity at the location and planned encoder settings rather than relying only on an ISP’s advertised speed. The National Informatics Centre’s Government of India webcast-service guidance gives a dedicated bandwidth figure of 2–4 Mbps per stream. That figure is specific to NIC’s service requirements; it is not a YouTube minimum or a universal recommendation for a station’s bitrate. NIC’s guidance also mentions a static public IP and outbound RTMP port 1935 access in the context of its hired-agency service. Check its current webcast-services guidance if those requirements apply to your arrangement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWrite down who will detect and respond to failures. Include the likely failure points in the station’s plan:
Best Value
- XLR MICROPHONE: requires an audio interface or mixer with an XLR input, not a USB microphone
- PODCAST-READY SOUND: broadcast-quality dynamic capsule tuned for speech, rejects room noise in untreated spaces
- BUILT-IN POP PROTECTION: internal pop filter and shock mounting tame plosives and desk thumps without extra accessories
- ALL-METAL BUILD: robust body designed to sit on air for years, matches the RØDECaster family
- IN THE BOX: PodMic with integrated swing mount, connects to any XLR interface, mixer or RØDECaster
- Internet outage or upload instability: decide how staff will notice, who contacts the provider, and how the encoder reconnects.
- Power loss: consider whether the encoder, audio source, and network equipment can remain available and how they will restart after power returns.
- Encoder or audio-source failure: assign responsibility for checking the program feed and restarting or switching equipment.
- YouTube or rights interruption: designate someone to review Studio notices and contact the appropriate rights representative.
These are planning considerations, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. The station’s local bandwidth, power reliability, and best backup design depend on its own circumstances.
Test, launch, and monitor
- Run a controlled test using the real program output, visual, encoder, connection, and restart procedure.
- Check the YouTube preview, audio, and Studio health information; confirm the stream is not exposing private information or the stream key.
- Have the responsible staff member verify the rights and Content ID escalation contacts, then schedule or start the public stream.
- Monitor the feed and keep a channel-specific schedule and backup contact process so someone knows when and how to respond to a failure.
YouTube documents concurrency caps of 10 active streams per channel and three active streams per stream key. Those caps describe simultaneous streams, not an uptime guarantee. The cited guidance does not establish a maximum continuous duration or guarantee that a 24/7 feed will remain archived, so check current YouTube guidance for the exact configuration rather than promising replay availability.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a pre-recorded radio program or rights-cleared video loop, StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer running at the station. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not take a live camera or radio input, and it does not clear music rights or prevent Content ID claims.
