You can run a 24/7 YouTube channel with seasonal programming, but YouTube does not document a built-in feature that automatically switches the playlist playing in a continuous live stream. YouTube playlists organize videos for viewers; a separate encoder or hosted playout service sends the actual live feed. To change seasons reliably, schedule the change in that playout system—or change it manually—and test the transition.
Choose how the live video will play
For a prerecorded continuous broadcast, the key decision is where the video playlist runs. YouTube provides the live destination; an encoder or hosted service supplies and rotates the program.
| Approach | What runs the playlist | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Software or hardware encoder | Your local computer or encoder sends the prepared program to YouTube. | The equipment and internet connection must remain available for the stream to continue. You are responsible for the playlist change, bandwidth, monitoring and recovery. YouTube supports software encoding and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events; dedicated hardware is not required for every channel. |
| Hosted continuous-streaming service | A provider sends stored or uploaded videos to YouTube from its service. | Check whether the provider supports the seasonal calendar, ordering, looping, transition and run duration you need. Provider limits and plan terms vary. |
One documented example is OneStream Live: its help page says the 24/7 YouTube feature requires an Enterprise plan and has a maximum duration of 30 days. Those are vendor-stated details on a page last updated September 3, 2026; verify current terms and whether its controls fit your recurring seasonal schedule before relying on it.
Check channel eligibility and content rights
Confirm live streaming is enabled
Verify the channel and check that live streaming is enabled before building a launch calendar. YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says creators must be at least 16 and have had no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. If a channel is restricted, YouTube says you cannot use another channel to evade that restriction. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance, getting started with live streaming and YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions information.

Clear every item in the rotation
Before uploading or scheduling the program, confirm that you have the rights needed to broadcast every video and music track worldwide. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the provider to hold the rights needed for the live content, including applicable music rights involving artists, labels, publishers and other royalty participants. Publicly accessible media is not automatically cleared for rebroadcast. Also follow YouTube’s Terms of Service and Community Guidelines.
Create the live destination in YouTube Studio
- Open Live Control Room: In YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go Live.
- Create or schedule the stream: Start a new stream or reuse settings. Set its title, description, privacy, audience and other relevant metadata. Schedule it in advance if you want to promote the upcoming broadcast; scheduled streams can appear as upcoming to subscribers, who may opt into a notification.
- Copy the stream URL and key: In the stream settings, copy the destination URL and stream key into the corresponding encoder or hosted-service fields. Treat the key like a password: it authorizes an encoder to send the feed. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the sending system.
- Preview before going live: Confirm the correct stream appears in Live Control Room and check picture and sound before starting the broadcast.
YouTube recommends setting up an encoder stream at least two hours before a scheduled event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes beforehand. These are preparation recommendations, not guarantees of uninterrupted operation. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and stream settings guidance.

Plan the seasonal playlists and the actual live rotation
Organize channel playlists for viewers
Create public-facing YouTube playlists by season or theme, with clear titles and descriptions. Choose visibility and arrange each playlist’s videos using YouTube’s manual drag-and-drop ordering in Studio. These playlists help viewers browse the channel; they are distinct from the playout queue being sent to the live stream.

One-click scans. No signup required.
You can also schedule an individual uploaded video to become public at a chosen date, time and time zone. That controls publication of that upload; YouTube’s guidance does not present scheduled publishing as a way to switch the playlist feeding a continuous live broadcast. See YouTube playlist management, playlist management in Studio and scheduled video publishing.

Configure the playout schedule separately
Set up the seasonal rotation in the encoder or hosted service that actually sends the live program. Before launch, write down the operational details so the change is repeatable:
- Season change date and exact time zone.
- Videos and playback order for each seasonal block.
- Whether items repeat in order or shuffle.
- A fallback item or playlist if a file is missing or playback stops.
- The person responsible for applying and checking each change.
- How the new block will be tested without interrupting the live channel unnecessarily.
Do not assume reordering a YouTube channel playlist changes an encoder’s queue, or that publishing a new upload changes what is currently on air. Confirm where the playout list lives and make the seasonal update there.

Set bandwidth, test reliability and launch
Leave upload capacity for the complete setup
Your available upload bandwidth must exceed the total outgoing stream bitrate. YouTube Help recommends leaving 20% headroom; when planning primary and backup encoders, its guidance says to account for the primary stream plus the backup plus that 20% margin. The recommendation is from YouTube Help as accessed in 2026. Check the encoder’s chosen bitrate and the actual available upload capacity before launch rather than relying on the internet plan’s headline speed.

- Prepare the encoder or hosted playout, stream key, seasonal playlist and scheduled YouTube destination.
- Start the encoder early enough to inspect its signal in Live Control Room, then preview the feed before going public.
- Check the watch page on desktop and mobile. Listen for clean audio, confirm the picture is correct, and make sure the intended playlist is playing.
- Test the seasonal change and fallback behavior in a controlled test, including what happens if the primary encoder or its network connection stops.
- Monitor audio and video after launch and confirm that the channel remains live. If using a local encoder, keep the computer, encoder and network connection running.

Promote the broadcast and plan for archives
Share the scheduled stream’s watch page ahead of the start time so viewers can find it and opt into a reminder. Organize completed live archives and highlight clips into playlists so viewers can browse past seasons.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended. Do not assume one continuous 24/7 broadcast will produce a single archive covering the entire run; plan how you will preserve or divide recordings if you need a complete seasonal archive.
Costs and practical trade-offs
A local encoder workflow may avoid a hosted-service subscription, but it depends on equipment, electricity, a stable internet connection and ongoing attention. A hosted service shifts playout operation away from your home computer, but check plan limits, maximum run duration, playlist scheduling and recovery behavior before choosing one. The OneStream Live example above specifies an Enterprise requirement and 30-day maximum for its documented 24/7 YouTube feature; the cited page does not establish that it supports every recurring seasonal-switch workflow.
