To run a 24/7 acoustic guitar stream on YouTube with FFmpeg, you need music you have the right to stream, an audio playlist, a continuous video layer, a YouTube Live stream key, and a host that stays online. FFmpeg sends the audio and video to YouTube; a process supervisor and reconnect strategy help recover from failures. A running command alone does not make a stream permanent.
What you need before you start
- Audio recordings you are authorized to use in a worldwide live stream, or a lawful audio feed.
- A still image or looping visual to accompany the audio. YouTube Live is configured as an audio-video stream, so keep video in the output even if the channel is primarily a music radio stream.
- FFmpeg on an always-on computer or remote host, with enough sustained upload capacity for your chosen video bitrate.
- A YouTube channel that can use live streaming, plus its YouTube Live server URL and stream key.
- A way to supervise and restart FFmpeg, and logs to diagnose interruptions.
Exact commands and flags depend on your operating system, FFmpeg build, file formats, and how you want to sequence tracks. The example below shows the main pattern; test it with your actual sources and confirm the resulting output in YouTube Studio rather than assuming every input behaves the same way.
1. Clear and prepare the music
Before encoding, confirm that your recordings are cleared for the intended live use, territories, duration, and platform. Keep copies of licenses or other permission records. A license does not necessarily prevent YouTube’s automated systems from identifying a track: for licensed third-party music, the rights owner may still need to allowlist your channel.
YouTube’s livestream terms say that streamers represent that they have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content, including music rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other participants. Actual rights depend on the agreements and territories involved. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and, where relevant, get qualified legal advice.

Do not treat Creator Music as a source for a live radio stream. YouTube says its licensed and revenue-sharing Creator Music tracks are for long-form videos, not live streams; see Creator Music usage details.
Prepare a playlist that behaves predictably
Normalize formats and sample rates where needed, then listen through track changes and loop boundaries. A playlist can contain gaps or abrupt transitions even if each file plays correctly by itself. Test the exact sequence you plan to broadcast, including the transition from the final track back to the first.
2. Create a continuous video layer
Use a horizontal still image, such as cover art you have permission to display, or a looped scene. Choose a resolution and frame rate your host can encode reliably; YouTube does not specify a special minimum resolution for a static acoustic-radio image in the cited encoder guidance. A still-image radio stream can use a modest frame rate, but the output must continue to carry valid video as well as audio.
Set the video bitrate within YouTube’s guidance for your selected resolution and frame rate, and below what your host’s sustained upstream can reliably deliver. Leave capacity for network variation rather than setting the encoder at the edge of the connection’s capacity.
3. Configure YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key into your publishing setup. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to publish to your channel. Do not include it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs.
- Use RTMP or RTMPS for the ordinary FFmpeg encoder path. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to its servers.
- Set the outgoing video and audio to match YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the capabilities of your host and connection.
YouTube’s guidance lists H.264 video, AAC audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds; the interval should not exceed four seconds. For stereo music, its audio baseline is AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. The guidance supports frame rates up to 60 fps, though a still-image radio stream generally does not need that rate. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the video bitrate range that applies to your chosen resolution and frame rate.

YouTube transcodes incoming live streams for different output formats. Your outgoing settings should therefore be reliable and compliant at ingest; viewers may receive a transcoded version.
4. Send the stream with FFmpeg
A typical FFmpeg publishing command takes an audio source and a video source, encodes both, then publishes to the YouTube RTMP(S) endpoint. This is a template, not a universal copy-and-paste command: replace the inputs, codecs, rates, dimensions, and URL with values appropriate to your files and YouTube stream.

ffmpeg
-re -stream_loop -1 -i "acoustic-playlist-file"
-loop 1 -i "radio-image.jpg"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-b:v VIDEO_BITRATE -maxrate VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize VIDEO_BUFFER
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "rtmps://YOUTUBE_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY"
Use an actual supported input format in place of acoustic-playlist-file; a playlist of separate files may require a concat input or another playlisting method. Replace the uppercase bitrate placeholders with numeric values accepted by FFmpeg and appropriate to the resolution and frame rate. The sample uses 30 fps and a 60-frame GOP to illustrate a two-second keyframe interval; if you change frame rate, adjust the GOP so keyframes remain about two seconds apart and never more than four seconds apart. Confirm the output settings against YouTube’s current guidance.
The example loops one input and a still image, but looping a container does not guarantee seamless audio at file boundaries. For multiple recordings, test the playlist method you choose. If you instead use a live audio feed, make sure it remains available and that a failure in that feed does not silently leave the video running without the intended music.
5. Keep FFmpeg running and recover from failures
For a genuinely unattended stream, run FFmpeg on an always-on computer or a remote VPS and use a supervisor such as systemd to start it at boot and restart it after the process exits. This is an implementation pattern, not a YouTube requirement. Configure retry delays or limits and retain logs so repeated failures do not become invisible.

FFmpeg’s protocol options include reconnect behavior for network errors and end-of-file conditions, but the correct options depend on the input protocol and installed build. Input reconnection is not the same as restarting the complete publishing process: a lost input may need reconnect handling, while an exited FFmpeg process needs a supervisor. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation for the options applicable to your input and verify behavior in your installed version.

YouTube’s API describes a broadcast as the watchable event and a stream as the transmission configuration. That distinction matters for continuous publishing: a process sending video and audio does not remove the need to manage the associated YouTube broadcast. See Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams.
RTMP/RTMPS or HLS?
| Method | When it fits | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | The standard FFmpeg-to-YouTube encoder workflow for this acoustic radio setup. | YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport; it is a straightforward fit for standard H.264/AAC output. |
| HLS | A specific workflow that requires HLS ingestion or a compatible feature or codec. | YouTube requires a supported HLS configuration, including HTTPS, TS segments, and a rolling playlist. Segmented delivery has higher latency. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance. |
For a straightforward always-on acoustic radio stream, use RTMP/RTMPS unless you have a specific reason to use HLS.
6. Test before announcing the stream
Run a private or unlisted test with the same audio, visual, settings, and approximate duration you intend to use in production. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Check the following during the test:
- Audio level, stereo playback, and any clipping or silence.
- Aspect ratio, frame stability, and whether the stream continues sending video.
- Encoding load and sustained upload headroom on the host.
- Playlist gaps, transitions, and the loop from the last track back to the first.
- YouTube Studio stream health and any messages or warnings.
- Recovery behavior after a controlled FFmpeg restart or brief network interruption.
While the stream is active, monitor YouTube Studio’s stream health and messages. Testing only a short opening segment will not reveal every issue that appears at a later playlist transition or after an extended run.

As the strings stretch with use, the guitar will hold tuning better over time.
Copyright, interruptions, and monetization
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can trigger a warning or placeholder, and an unresolved match can interrupt or terminate the stream. If you have a license for a track, confirm whether the rights owner must allowlist your channel; permission on paper alone may not stop automated enforcement. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Permission to use music and eligibility to monetize a channel are separate questions. YouTube’s channel monetization policy reviews reused content at the channel level and says reused-content issues can apply even when the creator has permission. Repeated or minimally transformed third-party material may affect eligibility; review the current YouTube channel monetization policies. Do not assume that acquiring a music license guarantees monetization.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or fix |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Wrong server URL or stream key, a malformed output URL, or a publishing process that exited. | Copy the current server URL and key from YouTube Studio, verify the FFmpeg output URL and logs, and confirm that the supervisor is running the intended command. |
| Stream starts, then drops or buffers | Unstable upstream capacity, encoding overload, or a host/network interruption. | Compare sustained upload capacity with the selected video bitrate, reduce bitrate or encoding load if needed, and inspect FFmpeg and YouTube Studio messages. Ensure the supervisor retries after process failure. |
| Video is present but there is no music | Audio input ended, failed, or was not mapped into the output. | Check input playback and audio mapping, inspect FFmpeg logs, and test the complete playlist including its loop boundary. Configure input reconnection where supported and applicable. |
| Audio plays but the visual freezes or disappears | The video source is finite or stalled, or the output is no longer producing valid video frames. | Use a persistent still or looped visual source and verify video continuity in a test stream. |
| Audio cuts or clicks between songs | Gaps or abrupt joins in the source files or playlist method. | Listen to transitions before launch and choose a playlist or file-preparation method that produces the desired joins. |
| Copyright warning or stream interruption | A live-content match, missing rights, or a licensed track whose owner has not allowlisted the channel. | Stop using material without the required rights, contact the rights owner about allowlisting where relevant, and follow YouTube’s notices and dispute process as appropriate. |
| FFmpeg keeps retrying but never resumes | Reconnect options may not apply to that input, or the process itself has exited and needs to be restarted. | Check which protocol failed, consult FFmpeg’s protocol documentation for applicable options, and use a supervisor to restart the whole process when it terminates. |
