To run a spa ambience video continuously with OBS, add it as a looping Media Source, connect OBS to your streaming platform with that platform’s stream key, choose an encoder profile the platform accepts and your upload connection can sustain, then test the full playback before leaving it unattended. For a playlist of videos, OBS can use a VLC Video source instead. This guide uses YouTube for its documented encoder settings; other platforms have their own requirements.
Prepare your video, audio and rights
Keep the video and any separate ambient audio files on the computer running OBS. OBS documents support for common video formats such as MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. Check the OBS Media Sources documentation if a file does not appear or play as expected.
Use footage and music you own or have permission to stream. The fact that OBS can play a file does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast it. A continuous stream does not make unlicensed music or footage safe to use.

| Option | Best for | Setup and behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One video file | Add the file to a scene and enable Loop so it starts again when playback ends. |
| VLC Video source | Several files in a playlist | Requires VLC to be installed. Add the playlist and use Loop Playlist, enabled by default. VLC source options also include shuffle and behavior controls when the source is not visible. |
These playback options are documented by OBS. Choose a single file for a predictable repeating scene; use a playlist when you want multiple ambience clips in sequence or want shuffle behavior.

Set up the OBS scene and source
- Create a scene: In OBS, use the Scenes panel to add a scene for the spa stream.
- Add the video: In Sources, select the add button and choose Media Source. Create a new source, browse to the video file and enable Loop. Confirm the video is visible in the preview and fits the canvas.
- Add audio if needed: If the ambience audio is embedded in the video, check the OBS audio mixer while it plays. If it is a separate file, add an audio source and confirm it is audible in the mixer. Avoid accidentally playing both embedded and separate copies at once.
- For multiple clips: Add a VLC Video source instead, choose the files or playlist, and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. Install VLC first. Check the playlist order and whether shuffle is enabled.
- Check source visibility behavior: If you use VLC’s source visibility controls, verify the source keeps playing as intended when it is hidden. Do not assume a hidden source behaves like a visible one.
OBS lists its supported media formats and source controls in the Media Sources guide.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to run. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current Live Control Room flow.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if available in the service list, then connect as prompted; if configuring a custom service, enter the server URL and stream key provided by YouTube.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Keep it private and use the key for the intended stream. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube rather than continuing to use a compromised key.
- Start the encoder output in OBS. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then complete YouTube’s go-live step if the control room prompts you to do so.
YouTube says some encoders support continuous 24/7 streams. Its help page also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer continuous broadcast will produce one complete archive. See YouTube’s encoder setup page for its current guidance.
Choose resolution, frame rate and bitrate
There is no single OBS bitrate that suits every stream. Balance the platform’s ingestion guidance against the upload capacity available to the streaming computer. OBS explains that bitrate depends on both connection upload speed and the streaming service’s limits in its overview guide.

For YouTube, the current help page recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its H.264 recommendations include the following figures; these are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not universal OBS presets:
| H.264 output | YouTube-listed minimum bitrate | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Confirm the current values in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance before you go live. For a 24/7 stream, select a resolution and frame rate that the computer and connection can maintain steadily, rather than choosing the highest option automatically. Leave capacity for normal upload variation; if stream health reports connection trouble, lower the bitrate or output profile and test again.
Test before leaving the stream unattended
Run a representative test before the full broadcast. OBS recommends testing before a first stream, and YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the actual broadcast. Use the OBS Quick Start Guide and YouTube’s encoder settings page as references.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
OBS shows a black screen or the file will not play
Check that the file path is correct and the format is supported by the source. Re-select the file in Media Source and verify the source is visible in the scene. For a VLC Video source, install VLC and confirm the playlist entries still point to available files.
Recommended Free Tools
The video ends instead of repeating
Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a VLC playlist, confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. Preview the end-to-start transition before going live.
There is no audio, or the ambience plays twice
Watch the OBS audio mixer during playback. If the video contains its own audio, do not add a second copy of the same soundtrack unless you intend to mix it. Check that a separate audio file is loaded and not muted.

YouTube does not receive the OBS stream
Recheck Settings → Stream, the selected service, the server URL if entered manually, and the stream key in YouTube Live Control Room. Ensure OBS is sending output and that you have selected the matching stream in the control room.
The stream health is poor or the connection drops
Check the connection’s available upload rate and reduce OBS bitrate, resolution or frame rate to a profile it can sustain. Verify the keyframe interval and CBR setting against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. OBS documents automatic reconnect as an advanced option, but reconnect does not guarantee recovery from a computer crash, power loss or an extended network outage.
A very long broadcast is not available as one archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Continuous streams lasting longer than that should not be treated as guaranteed to produce a single complete archive; consult YouTube’s encoder setup guidance for current behavior.

Plan for continuous operation and platform rules
OBS runs on the computer hosting it, so the computer, OBS process and internet connection must remain available for the stream to continue. Automatic reconnect can address some interruptions, but it is not a full backup plan for system or power failures. No particular computer or connection is established as capable of guaranteed 24/7 service.
Use original or properly licensed ambience footage and audio, and review YouTube’s current rules for live streaming and monetization before broadcasting. A technically valid loop is not by itself proof that a channel or its content meets YouTube’s copyright or monetization policies. Do not promise viewers a single replay archive for a broadcast beyond YouTube’s stated under-12-hour archive condition.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the YouTube stream to continue without keeping OBS or a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option for uploaded videos. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
- Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free day.
