To stream recorded college lectures on YouTube around the clock, first enable live streaming on a verified channel, then connect YouTube Studio’s stream URL and key to an encoder or cloud playout service that can continuously loop a playlist. Test the public viewing path, plan for internet and power failures, and secure permission for the recordings and any third-party material before making the stream public.
Before you start: check channel eligibility and permissions
Enable YouTube Live early
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned launch. Confirm rights for a public broadcast in India
A public YouTube stream makes recordings available for viewers to see or hear, which can raise copyright issues even when the underlying video is a college lecture. The Copyright Act, 1957 includes limited educational exceptions, including certain uses in the course of instruction and certain communications within an educational institution to a limited institution-connected audience. Those provisions should not be assumed to authorize an unrestricted public stream or the use of third-party images, music, film clips, or textbook pages.

Confirm who owns or controls each lecture recording and obtain written permission for the intended audience and use. Section 17(cc) addresses ownership of an address or speech delivered in public; employment terms, assignments, and institutional agreements may affect the result. Ask the institution’s legal office to assess the actual recordings, agreements, audience, and embedded works. Choose how the recordings will be played
Encoder on a computer or hardware device
YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video for streaming. An encoder can send a continuous playlist or rotation, but a computer-based setup depends on that computer, its power, the encoder process, and the network remaining available. A hardware encoder is a separate device, but it still depends on power, connectivity, and a playout workflow that keeps supplying recordings.
Cloud playout
A cloud service can play uploaded recordings without relying on a college computer staying on. YouTube’s encoder documentation lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded streaming; that listing is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. Before choosing any service, verify current pricing, India availability, storage and retention, support hours, recovery behavior, and cancellation terms directly with the provider.

Compare the operational responsibilities
- Playlist updates: Decide who adds, removes, and orders recordings, and how the schedule is kept accurate.
- Failure response: Identify who detects an interrupted stream and who restarts it after power, network, software, or platform issues.
- Network: Assess whether the college connection has dependable upload capacity reserved for streaming, including during busy periods.
- Security: Limit access to the YouTube stream key and store it as a credential.
- Service terms: Check vendor-specific costs, geographic availability, retention, support coverage, and cancellation before committing.
Set up the YouTube stream
- Verify the channel and enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, complete channel verification and make sure live streaming is available. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation; confirm there are no live-streaming restrictions from the past 90 days.
- Create the stream. Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live to configure the broadcast in Live Control Room. Choose the stream’s visibility and schedule to suit the intended audience, then use an accurate title and description that say the lectures are prerecorded and explain the sequence.
- Copy the connection details. In Live Control Room, copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the encoder or playout service. Treat the key like a password: share it only with authorized operators, and reset it if it is exposed.
- Load the recordings. Build a playlist or rotation that can continue feeding the encoder. Check that the files play in the intended order and that the transition between items does not leave the stream without video or audio.
- Start a test feed and preview it. Check the preview in Live Control Room before making the event public. For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends starting the encoder at least 15 minutes ahead to check readiness.
- Verify the viewer experience. Open the public watch page or channel from a separate device or browser. Confirm picture, sound, title, schedule, and audience visibility; check a local archive if your setup creates one.
Plan bandwidth, monitoring, and archives
Leave upload headroom
YouTube recommends having upload bandwidth at least 20% above the total stream bitrate. Measure outbound capacity at the actual location and time of operation; shared campus internet can leave less capacity for the encoder than a general speed-test result suggests. Network interruptions can break the feed, so include the connection and its failure response in the operating plan.

Monitor both ends
Check the encoder or cloud playout status as well as the public YouTube player. YouTube recommends ongoing monitoring and encoder testing. Assign an operator or define an alert-and-recovery process so a stalled playlist, lost connection, or dropped YouTube stream does not go unnoticed.

Do not assume a 24-hour stream becomes one archive
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous 24-hour broadcast will appear as one complete replay. If a replay is important, plan a separate recording or shorter scheduled sessions and verify the resulting videos in Studio.
Make the stream useful and policy-aware
Label prerecorded lectures clearly
Use a title, description, and schedule that accurately identify the feed as prerecorded and show which lectures are playing. Scheduling the stream in advance can help viewers find and plan for it.

Do not count on monetization
YouTube may offer live-stream revenue features such as ads, Super Chat or Super Stickers, and memberships, subject to channel eligibility and settings; ads are not guaranteed to serve. A loop of existing recordings should not be assumed to qualify for monetization. YouTube’s reused-content policy covers material republished without significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value. Its inauthentic-content policy also addresses repetitive or mass-produced material; a July 15, 2025 update clarified that label. - Live streaming is unavailable: Verify the channel and check for restrictions within the past 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
- The encoder will not connect: Recheck that the server URL and stream key were copied into the correct fields. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- The stream keeps dropping: Check measured upload capacity against the total stream bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Investigate shared-network congestion, connection interruptions, and encoder or playout failures.
- The playlist stops or repeats incorrectly: Inspect the playlist order and playback status in the encoder or service, then check the actual YouTube player. Confirm that the playout method is designed to continue supplying content.
- The public watch page does not show the expected feed: Confirm the selected visibility, schedule, and event in Live Control Room, then check from a separate device or browser.
- The archive is incomplete or missing: Check the stream duration and Studio listings. YouTube’s automatic-archive guidance is for streams under 12 hours, so a 24-hour feed needs a separate archive plan.
