To keep a radio-style YouTube stream running around the clock from Kerala, prepare a continuous audio-and-visual source, connect it to YouTube through an encoder, and plan for rights, monitoring, and failures before you go live. A music-only station, a host-led show, and a mix of both need different audio equipment—but music rights matter in every format, whether or not the channel is monetized.
Choose the kind of radio stream you are building
Music-only playback
You need a continuous audio source and an encoder that can send it to YouTube. A camera or microphone is not essential if the program consists only of prerecorded audio. If you use static artwork, make sure the encoder can pair that visual with the audio for the full broadcast.
Host-led or mixed programming
For live announcements, interviews, or a presenter, add a microphone and any mixer or audio interface needed to get a clean signal into the encoder. YouTube lists microphones among the typical external audio hardware used for encoder streams. A USB microphone for livestreaming can be a simple option for a host, but it is not a requirement for music-only playback.

YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so do this well before your planned launch. These are YouTube’s current Help requirements, accessed in 2026. What you need for a continuous stream
- A source that can run continuously: this may be a playlist or other playback source for prerecorded radio programming, or a live audio setup for a host-led show.
- An encoder: YouTube supports software and hardware encoders. There is no requirement to buy a particular paid encoder.
- A stable internet connection: the connection needs enough upload capacity for the chosen stream bitrate, with headroom for normal variation.
- A visual: YouTube Live is a video stream, so radio audio still needs a visual component, such as artwork or a camera feed.
- Operational cover: for unattended hours, plan how someone will notice a failure and restart or replace the encoder, connection, or power supply.
- Documented music permissions: clear the intended online use of both recordings and underlying musical or literary works, as applicable, before broadcasting.
How to set up a 24/7 radio livestream on YouTube
- Verify the channel and enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, confirm the channel is verified and eligible, then enable live streaming in advance. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. (YouTube Help, “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.”)
- Choose the program source and encoder. Configure continuous playback for a music-only channel, or connect the microphone and other audio hardware for a host-led show. Add the visual that will accompany the audio. Use an encoder compatible with your equipment and network; YouTube supports software and hardware encoders.
- Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Use RTMPS ingestion if your encoder supports it. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream, so do not share it publicly or include it in a public screenshot. - Set the encoder to a sustainable quality. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; constant bitrate encoding; and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Use settings supported by both your encoder and connection. Do not chase the highest resolution if it makes the stream unstable. YouTube’s guidance does not establish one bitrate that is right for every resolution and encoder, so select the bitrate for your chosen output using YouTube’s current encoder specifications and test it on the actual connection. - Test the actual network and program. Test at the intended bitrate on the internet connection you will use for the broadcast. YouTube recommends that streaming bitrate not exceed available upload bandwidth and advises leaving 20% upload headroom. If you configure a backup stream, allow extra upload capacity for it as well. Preview the feed in Live Control Room and check stream health, audio level, visual continuity, and whether the playback source continues after a track or program segment ends. - Start the encoder and confirm the preview before going live. Start sending the feed to YouTube, verify that the Live Control Room receives it, and check the preview for sound and picture. Start the broadcast from the Live Control Room when you are ready.
- Set up monitoring and recovery. Arrange a way to notice a dropped connection, stalled playback, encoder crash, or power failure—especially overnight. YouTube advises reliable connectivity, testing, and backup-encoder failover. These measures reduce operational risk; they do not guarantee uninterrupted uptime. Decide in advance who can restart the encoder or switch to a backup, and keep recovery access secure. (YouTube Help, “Streaming tips.”)
Plan for stream length and YouTube archives
Do not rely on one 24-hour broadcast to create a complete archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. If preserving the program matters, consider using separate sessions shorter than 12 hours or making a separate local recording. Clear music rights for the intended online use
In India, a permission for one part of a song’s rights does not necessarily cover every right needed for a YouTube broadcast. IPRS describes licensing musical and literary works in its repertoire, including an Internet Non Interactive category, and notes that sound-recording rights may be administered separately by organizations such as PPL, Novex, or RMPL. PPL India describes its radio-broadcast licence as covering its sound recordings on terrestrial FM and community radio; do not assume that this by itself clears a YouTube internet stream. - For each planned track, identify the sound recording and the underlying composition and lyrics, as applicable, and establish who controls the relevant rights.
- Ask the relevant rights holders for written permission covering your YouTube livestream, the territories where it will be available, monetization if applicable, and any archive or replay you intend to keep.
- Ask whether the channel needs to be allowlisted for licensed third-party music and how any Content ID matches should be handled.
- Keep copies of the permissions and any limits or conditions attached to them.
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material from another live broadcast. A match can interrupt or terminate a stream, and an archive may receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast. YouTube’s live-stream terms also place responsibility on the broadcaster to have the necessary rights for worldwide use on Google services, including music licensing rights. A licence or permission does not guarantee that automated matching will never interrupt a broadcast, which is why allowlisting and a documented response plan matter. The available guidance does not establish which permissions cover a particular station, catalogue, or channel, nor does it settle whether a particular operator needs an additional Kerala-specific broadcast licence. Confirm your situation with the relevant rights holders and obtain written terms before using commercial music; do not treat a terrestrial radio licence as automatically sufficient for YouTube. YouTube’s terms require broadcasters to meet applicable regulatory obligations.

Keeping the stream running: local setup or cloud playback
A local encoder on a computer or dedicated hardware gives you direct control, but it depends on local power, internet, and a device that stays running. Whichever option you use, test recovery and arrange monitoring rather than assuming a 24/7 stream will take care of itself. YouTube’s encoder directory also lists Gyre as a cloud-based service for continuous streaming of prerecorded videos; confirm that its current workflow fits an audio-led radio program, and check availability in India, pricing, and terms before choosing it.
