To make a particular speaker, headphone set, or other output the default in Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Sound and select the device under Output. In Windows 10, choose the output from the taskbar sound menu, or use the classic Sound dialog to set it as the default playback device. Windows can list several outputs at once, including built-in speakers, USB devices, and HDMI or display outputs, so the step that matters most is confirming which one is actually selected.
Before you start: playback output versus recording input
The steps below choose where Windows sends sound for playback. Microphones and other recording inputs are set in a separate list, so if the problem is that your voice is not being picked up, you are looking at the wrong setting. Keep that distinction in mind when you open the sound panels.
Set the default output in Windows 11
- Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select the speakers, headphones, or other device you want to use for playback. Microsoft describes this selection as setting the output device, which becomes the default.
- Play a short sound, such as a system notification or a video, and confirm that it comes from the hardware you expect. If Windows has picked a different output than the one you intended, select the intended device again and retest.
- If there is still no sound, check the system and app volume and the mute state, then open More sound settings to confirm the device is enabled.
Set the default output in Windows 10
Windows 10 offers two routes. The quick route is the taskbar, and the classic route is the Sound dialog, which is the one that explicitly sets a persistent default.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteQuick route: the taskbar sound icon
- Select the sound icon on the taskbar.
- Select the arrow beside the volume slider to open the list of connected devices.
- Choose the output you want. Then play a short sound to confirm it.
Classic route: Control Panel Sound dialog
- Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound.
- On the Playback tab, select the intended device.
- Select Set as Default Device, then select OK.
- Test playback. If sound still fails, check the volume and mute state and the device properties, and confirm that Use this device (enable) is selected for that device.
Choosing the right device when several are listed
Sound problems often come from selecting the wrong output rather than from a fault. A USB headset or speaker, a television connected over HDMI, or a monitor’s audio output can appear alongside your built-in speakers, and Windows does not always choose the one you are using. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance states the point directly: “If you’re connecting to an audio device—such as headphones or speakers—using USB or HDMI, you might need to set that device as the default audio device.”
#1 Best Overall
- External computer speaker in Black (set of 2) for amplifying PC or laptop audio
- USB-Powered from USB port of PC or Laptop
- In-line volume control for easy access
- Blue LED lights; metal finish and scratch-free padded base
- Bottom radiator for “springy” bass sound
Watch for one trap in particular. If you use an external monitor that has no built-in speakers, selecting that monitor as the default output can leave you with no audible sound at all. In that case, switch the default back to your speakers or headphones.
When there is no sound after you set the default
Work through these checks in order. Each one rules out a common cause before you move on to drivers.

1. Confirm the device is connected and selected
Check the cable or Bluetooth connection, then confirm that the device is the one selected under Output (Windows 11) or in the taskbar list (Windows 10). Then check the system volume, the app volume in the Volume mixer, and whether either is muted. Microsoft’s no-sound guidance covers this sequence in more detail: Fix audio issues when no sound plays from speakers or headphones in Windows.
2. Confirm the device is enabled
In Windows 11, open More sound settings. In Windows 10, use the Sound dialog’s Playback tab. A disabled device will not play sound even if it is selected. Enable it there and test again. The general approach is described in Fix sound or audio problems in Windows.

3. Turn off audio enhancements and try a different format
Microsoft suggests turning audio enhancements off as a troubleshooting step, then testing again. If sound is quiet or distorted, its low-volume guidance also suggests trying a different default format in the device’s properties and testing once more. These are options to try, not guaranteed fixes. If you are dealing with low volume specifically, Fix low or quiet sound in Windows covers those settings in more depth.
4. Check whether Windows can see the device
If the output does not appear in the list at all, follow Microsoft’s missing-device steps in Fix missing or undetected audio output device in Windows. In summary:

5. Update or reinstall the driver from the manufacturer
If the required driver is missing or incompatible with your version of Windows, get the driver from your PC or sound-card manufacturer’s support site, choosing the build that matches your Windows version. Avoid generic driver-download utilities for this step. A settings-only problem rarely needs one, and a driver fix is only worthwhile when Windows cannot see the device or reports a driver fault.

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The steps above still describe how the sound settings work on Windows 10, but if your PC cannot move to Windows 11, weigh the lack of security updates before relying on it for sensitive work. Microsoft’s support pages list the lifecycle details in Fix sound or audio problems in Windows.
