To single-space text in Word, select the paragraphs you want to change and choose 1.0 from the line-spacing menu. The steps differ slightly between Word for the web and the mobile apps, and paragraph gaps may need a separate adjustment.
Set single spacing in Word for the web
-
Open your document in Word for the web. If it is in Viewing mode, open the Viewing dropdown near Share and switch to Editing.
-
Select the paragraphs you want to change. To apply the setting throughout the document, select all text in the editing canvas.

On the Home tab, open Line and Paragraph Spacing and choose 1.0. Microsoft identifies 1.0 as the single-spacing setting for selected paragraphs (Microsoft’s single-spacing instructions).

If the paragraphs still have visible gaps, adjust paragraph spacing separately: open Layout > Paragraph and change the Before or After value. These controls change space around paragraphs, not the distance between lines within them (Microsoft’s paragraph spacing guidance).
Set single spacing in the Word mobile app
Select the text first. To select the whole document, tap or press and hold in the document, then choose Select All from the command bar. Open the line-spacing control for your device and choose 1.0. Microsoft lists mobile line-spacing choices from 1.0 to 3.0 (Microsoft’s mobile instructions).

Why a gap can remain between paragraphs
Line spacing controls the distance between lines within a paragraph. A blank-looking gap after a paragraph can come from separate before- or after-paragraph spacing. In Word for the web, use Layout > Paragraph to adjust those values.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOn Android, Word includes options to add or remove spacing before or after paragraphs; which choices appear depends on the spacing already applied. The iPhone and iPad app instructions do not provide special controls for changing before- or after-paragraph spacing (Microsoft’s mobile instructions).

Common fixes
-
Only some text changed: Word applies the formatting to the selected paragraphs. Select all text before choosing 1.0 if you want the entire document changed.
-
A new web document is spaced more loosely: Microsoft says Word for the web does not have a way to change the default. A new web document reverts to 1.15 line spacing (Microsoft’s default-spacing guidance). The 1.0 setting you apply to the current document is not a persistent browser default.
