For a 24/7 animated kids’ YouTube livestream, choose a resolution your animation source can genuinely support and your encoder and internet connection can sustain continuously. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default; to force a fixed resolution, create a custom stream key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution. A practical starting point is 1080p at 30 fps when your source and upload connection support it; use 720p at 30 fps if bandwidth is more limited.
Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
Resolution describes the dimensions of the video sent to YouTube. Frame rate describes how many frames arrive each second, and bitrate determines how much data the encoder uses to carry them. YouTube transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple formats for viewers, so your decision is about the quality and format you send—not a single resolution that every viewer must watch.
There is no official resolution preset specifically for animated or 24/7 kids’ channels. Use the highest setting that reflects the source material and remains stable over time. For example, sending a 1080p output cannot restore detail that is absent from a lower-resolution animation master.

These are YouTube’s recommended live-encoder bitrates for the listed codec, resolution, and frame rate; its guidance also specifies minimums. Use YouTube’s live-encoder table for other frame rates, especially 60 fps, because the recommended bitrate changes. Do not substitute the separate upload-video bitrate chart. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, AV1, and settings up to 60 fps.

Balance detail, motion, and reliability
- Match the animation master: Choose a resolution the source actually supports. Upscaling a less detailed source does not create real detail.
- Choose frame rate for the animation: Smooth, fast movement may benefit from a higher frame rate, but it requires more bitrate. Limited animation or a lower native frame rate may be adequately represented at 30 fps; this is a content-dependent choice, not a YouTube rule.
- Plan for sustained upload: YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. A connection that briefly reaches the required speed but cannot hold it is a poor fit for a continuous broadcast. If using backup ingest, budget for the primary and backup bitrates plus headroom. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Check encoder support: Confirm that your software or hardware encoder supports the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec before configuring the stream.
Set a fixed resolution in YouTube Live
YouTube’s default is automatic resolution and frame-rate detection. Leave it enabled if you do not need to force a particular incoming format. To set a fixed resolution, use a custom stream key and enable manual stream settings in Live Control Room.
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create or select the stream.
- In the stream key selector, create a custom stream key if you need manual resolution control.
- Under Stream Resolution, turn on Turn on manual settings. If you leave manual settings off, YouTube uses automatic detection, its recommended default.
- In your encoder, select a source-supported resolution and frame rate, choose a supported codec, and set the bitrate using YouTube’s live table for that exact combination.
- Where available, use RTMPS for secure ingestion. Configure constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds.
- Run a private or unlisted test using representative animation and audio. Check the Live Control Room preview, stream health, and any error messages before relying on the setup.
- For continuous operation, monitor the outgoing connection. If keeping a complete local recording matters, configure and test local recording separately.
Available encoder controls vary by software or hardware. Use its own documentation to locate resolution, frame-rate, codec, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe settings; the exact labels are not universal.

Plan separately for archives and DVR
Resolution settings do not guarantee that YouTube will save a complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive backup. If a complete YouTube replay matters for a continuous channel, plan an operating approach that creates stream segments under the stated limit rather than assuming one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be preserved. DVR rewind is a separate viewer feature: for very long streams, including those longer than 12 hours, it may be limited or unavailable. Viewers also cannot seek to a point before the stream went live. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Kids’ settings are separate from resolution
Resolution does not decide whether a livestream is made for kids. If you designate it as made for kids, YouTube lists live chat and comments on the live stream and archive among the features that are disabled. Personalized ads on live streams and Premieres are also disabled. Make the audience designation based on the content and YouTube’s requirements, then account for its interaction and advertising consequences independently of video quality. Equipment and always-on operation
You can encode with software or a standalone hardware encoder; dedicated hardware is an optional production choice, not a documented requirement for animation or for changing resolution. YouTube’s verified encoder list includes products such as AWS Elemental MediaLive and CamStreamer App, and describes CamStreamer as supporting automated continuous 24/7 streaming. Those listings do not establish that a particular device or service is necessary for your channel.

A computer-based encoder requires the computer, encoder, and internet connection to remain available. A cloud service is another way to keep uploaded videos playing to YouTube without leaving a home computer running.
