Set your Steam base price around the value of your game, then use Steam’s regional conversion suggestions as benchmarks—not as automatic answers. Review every currency and region group, adjust prices only when local purchasing power and comparable entertainment prices support the change, and check minimum-price and discount rules before submitting. Steam’s regional pricing explorer lists 37 currencies and 4 region groups; its conversion data is stated as current through January 2026.
1. Choose a base price for the game
Start with what the game offers, not a desired regional discount. Steam recommends considering expected playtime, replayability, multiplayer, Early Access status, comparable games, and the promotions you may run later. Research similar games by playing them and reviewing player feedback to understand how customers perceive their value. As Valve puts it, “It’s not about trying to undercut competition with a lower price.”

A sensible base price gives you a reference point for regional decisions; it does not establish that every other market should receive the same percentage reduction.

2. Review Steam’s regional conversion methods
Steamworks provides three ways to compare a base price with suggested prices in other currencies. Each is a different benchmark, not a required price list. Valve says developers may determine their own price in each currency.

| Method | What it considers | Useful as | What it cannot tell you by itself |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exchange-rate conversion | A simple exchange rate at the indicated time. | A currency-conversion reference. | It does not account for local purchasing power or comparable entertainment costs. |
| Purchasing-power conversion | Public purchasing-power data for a country or region. | A broad affordability benchmark. | It is not a game-specific measure of willingness to pay. |
| Multi-variable conversion | Local purchasing power, expected comparable entertainment costs, and exchange rates. | A broader benchmark combining several factors. | It remains a recommendation; it does not replace your market research or pricing decision. |
The regional pricing explorer reports 37 currencies and 4 region groups, with public data for its conversion methods stated as of January 2026. Treat those suggestions as a dated reference: exchange rates and market conditions can change.
3. Inspect each currency and region group
In Steamworks, pricing is managed by the Steamworks partner for the game’s packages. Review the full set of currency and region results rather than applying one percentage reduction across all markets. For each proposed price, consider whether it fits the game’s positioning, local purchasing power, comparable entertainment prices, exchange rates, and customer expectations.

Check every supported currency entry before release. Valve notes that if a price is missing in a currency, the game is unavailable to customers who rely on that currency; Japanese yen is one example. A price that looks complete in your primary market may therefore still leave a regional gap.
4. Check minimums and tax treatment
Steam’s pricing documentation says a minimum base price must be at least equivalent to the Multi-Variable Conversion method for the $0.99 USD tier. The lowest possible transaction price is 50% off that minimum base price, or roughly $0.49 USD. These are Steam’s stated thresholds, not a guarantee that every low-priced game can be sold at every regional price point.

Some lower-priced games may be unavailable in currencies where a proposed base or discounted price falls below the applicable threshold, or may have discount options constrained. Minimums can change, so check Steam’s current minimum-price breakdown in Steamworks before setting a very low price or planning a discount.
Steam’s documentation also says displayed tax treatment follows local norms and regulations. Do not assume that every displayed regional price treats tax in the same way.

5. Account for review and promotion timing
- Initial prices and proposed adjustments: Valve reviews them, usually within one to two business days. Pricing changes cannot be scheduled automatically; after review, developers can choose when to publish them. Check each value carefully because Valve does not guarantee it will catch every input error.
- Changing price after launch: Steam asks developers to wait until more than 30 days after release before changing a price.
- Discounts after an increase: Increasing the price in one or more currencies starts a 30-day cooldown before you can submit discounts. Plan regional price increases around your sale calendar.
6. Use a practical decision checklist
- Set the base price: weigh the game’s content and format against comparable titles and the value players receive.
- Open the game’s package pricing in Steamworks: make sure the account has the pricing permissions required to edit it.
- Compare all three conversion methods: note where exchange-rate, purchasing-power, and multi-variable suggestions differ.
- Review each currency and region group: adjust only where local conditions and the game’s positioning justify a different price.
- Verify coverage and thresholds: confirm required currency entries are present and proposed prices meet Steam’s current minimums.
- Check the calendar before submitting: account for Valve’s review, the post-release waiting period, and any discount cooldown caused by an increase.
- Revisit when circumstances change: the explorer’s stated data date is January 2026, so reassess prices when market conditions or the game’s position changes.
The right regional price cannot be determined from the conversion tool alone. It depends on the game’s base-price target, genre and playtime, comparable titles, audience, launch strategy, and commercial goals.
