1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSet PDF page width with CSS @page { size: ... } or with the PDF export API’s width and height options. For predictable paper dimensions, use explicit units such as mm, cm, or in. In Playwright or Puppeteer, set preferCSSPageSize: true when CSS should control the PDF page size.
Choose which setting controls page width
There are two valid places to define PDF geometry: the web page’s print stylesheet or the code that creates the PDF. Pick one as the source of truth. If both define different sizes, the browser may scale the CSS layout to fit the API-selected paper size.
| Approach | Geometry owner | Best fit | Precedence behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
CSS @page |
The document stylesheet | The same print layout should apply in browser printing and automated exports. | Set preferCSSPageSize: true in Playwright or Puppeteer so CSS page dimensions take priority. |
PDF API width and height |
The export call | The service or application should select paper geometry for each request. | When CSS page size is not preferred, the API’s chosen paper geometry can take precedence and CSS sizing may be scaled to fit. |
MDN describes CSS @page as the rule for modifying printed-page dimensions, orientation, and margins; its size descriptor specifies the page box’s dimensions and orientation: MDN’s @page reference.
Set width in CSS with @page
Use a physical paper size when the exported PDF must match a known page format. This example sets an A4 portrait sheet, with 12 mm margins, and hides an element that is only useful on screen:

@page {
size: 210mm 297mm;
margin: 12mm;
}
@media print {
.screen-only { display: none; }
.export-content { width: auto; }
}
For a custom page, replace the two dimensions after size with the desired width and height. Use landscape when orientation is the requirement rather than a custom dimension, or specify the dimensions in the desired order. Explicit margins make the available content area easier to reason about: with a 210 mm page and 12 mm left and right margins, the nominal content width is 186 mm.
Keep print-specific layout rules in @media print. Browser PDF generation uses print media by default, so these rules can change what appears and how content flows in the exported file. CSS page sizing governs the sheet; it does not guarantee every element will fit on one page. Check wide tables, large images, fixed-position elements, and page breaks after changing dimensions.
Use physical units for paper, pixels for pixel workflows
For paper-oriented documents, prefer mm, cm, or in. Use px if the desired dimensions come from a pixel-based workflow. Avoid viewport units such as vw, vh, vmin, and vmax in @page; MDN notes that their handling there is still under discussion.
Set page width in Playwright
Playwright’s page.pdf() creates a PDF using print CSS media. The following Node.js example sets the paper size and margins in the export call, while also asking Playwright to prefer any CSS @page size if one is present:

await page.pdf({
path: 'export.pdf',
width: '210mm',
height: '297mm',
margin: { top: '12mm', right: '12mm', bottom: '12mm', left: '12mm' },
preferCSSPageSize: true,
printBackground: true
});
Playwright accepts units including px, in, cm, and mm for width, height, and margins. See the Playwright page.pdf() API reference for the available options.
In this example, the CSS and API dimensions agree. If you want the export call—not CSS—to own the dimensions, remove or adjust conflicting @page rules and do not rely on CSS sizing to determine the final sheet. The key is consistency, not setting the same geometry in two places by habit.
Set page width in Puppeteer
Puppeteer offers the same practical controls. This example uses A4 dimensions, explicit margins, and CSS page-size precedence:
await page.pdf({
path: 'export.pdf',
width: '210mm',
height: '297mm',
margin: { top: '12mm', right: '12mm', bottom: '12mm', left: '12mm' },
preferCSSPageSize: true,
printBackground: true
});
Puppeteer documents width, height, format, margins, scale, printBackground, and preferCSSPageSize. The documented default for preferCSSPageSize is false; in that mode, CSS page size is scaled to fit the selected paper size. For the exact behavior and supported options, consult the Puppeteer PDF options reference.

Puppeteer also supports choosing screen media before export with await page.emulateMediaType('screen'). Use this only when you intentionally need screen styles in the PDF; ordinary paper exports should be designed and checked with print media.
Calculate usable content width and prevent scaling
Page width is the sheet width, not the width available to your content. To estimate usable width, subtract the left and right margins from the page width. For example, a 210 mm sheet with 12 mm margins on each side leaves 186 mm before accounting for any additional layout constraints.
- Want CSS to control the sheet? Define dimensions in
@pageand setpreferCSSPageSize: true. - Want the export request to control the sheet? Set API
widthandheight, and make sure conflicting CSS page dimensions are absent or intentionally subordinate. - Want stable content width? Set margins explicitly rather than relying on defaults.
- Want print-only layout changes? Put them in
@media printand verify the exported PDF uses print media.
Do not expect a page-width setting alone to prevent all reflow or clipping. A wider or narrower sheet can change line wrapping and pagination; inspect the rendered PDF for page breaks, table overflow, image sizing, and fixed elements.
Why the exported PDF is narrower than the webpage
A PDF page is a physical sheet with margins and print layout, while a browser window is a viewport. A webpage that fills a wide screen is not automatically exported at that viewport’s width. The PDF generator applies print media and page geometry, so content may wrap differently or be scaled.

- Check whether the page’s
@pagedimensions differ from the API’swidthandheight. - Check
preferCSSPageSize: when enabled, CSS size wins; with Puppeteer’s documented default offalse, CSS size is scaled to the selected paper size. - Check horizontal margins, which reduce usable content width.
- Check print CSS for a fixed or max-width container, hidden elements, or styles that differ from the screen layout.
Troubleshoot ignored width, clipping, or unexpected page breaks
CSS @page appears to be ignored
In Playwright or Puppeteer, confirm that preferCSSPageSize: true is set if CSS should own the page size. Otherwise, the API-selected paper dimensions can be used and CSS sizing may be scaled. Also confirm that the rule is valid CSS and that the generated PDF is using print media.
The output is smaller or larger than expected
Look for conflicting CSS and API dimensions, then choose one geometry owner. Check the scale option if your Puppeteer configuration sets it, and review the margins. A correct page width with unnecessarily large margins still leaves less room for content.
Content is cut off at the right edge
Inspect wide tables, fixed-width elements, images, and containers in print mode. Reduce their print width, allow tables or long content to wrap where appropriate, or intentionally choose a wider page. A page-size change does not automatically make every element responsive.
Page breaks differ from the screen layout
PDF export uses print media by default. Review @media print styles and the resulting pagination. If the screen stylesheet is deliberately required in Puppeteer, call page.emulateMediaType('screen') before page.pdf(); otherwise, design for print and verify the output at the final dimensions.

Viewport units give surprising page dimensions
Use physical units in @page instead. MDN notes that the W3C is still discussing how viewport units should behave in that context.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a custom PDF page width instead of A4 or Letter?
Yes. Specify a custom width and height in a physical unit such as millimeters, centimeters, or inches in CSS @page or in the PDF API options.
Should I set both CSS page size and API width?
Only when they agree or when you deliberately set precedence. Choose one geometry owner; if CSS should win, enable preferCSSPageSize.
Does changing PDF page width change the webpage itself?
No. It changes the printed page geometry and can alter print layout and pagination, but it does not change the live page’s screen viewport.
