Set age limits on the profile your child will use, then protect adult profiles so they cannot switch to unrestricted viewing. Netflix offers profile maturity ratings and title blocks; HBO Max combines Kids-profile ratings with exit and profile codes; Disney+ offers profile ratings, Junior Mode, and access controls. Menus can vary by country, device, and app version.
What parental controls do—and what they do not
A content rating limits the catalogue available on a particular profile. A PIN or exit code controls access to profiles or the ability to leave a restricted profile. These are separate safeguards: a child may still reach unrestricted content if they can switch to an adult profile that is not protected.
Set restrictions on the profile the child actually uses, and check the adult profiles they could open. Ratings and labels vary by region; the Netflix examples below are for the United States.

In a web browser
- Open the Netflix Account page.
- Select Profiles, then Adjust parental controls, and choose the profile to change.
- Verify your identity using the code Netflix sends to your email or mobile phone, or your Netflix account password.
- Set the Maturity Rating and select Save.
In the Netflix app on a phone or tablet
- Tap My Netflix, then the profile name.
- Choose Manage Profiles, select the profile, and tap Viewing Restrictions.
- Tap Maturity Rating, enter the account password when prompted, and choose the limit.
Netflix says maturity-rating changes for a Kids profile must be made in a web browser. The selected rating determines which titles the profile can see. To restrict a particular show or movie that falls within the allowed rating, use Netflix’s option to block specific titles for that profile.

Netflix ratings may be assigned by Netflix or a local standards organization, and the labels vary by country. In the US, examples include TV-Y, TV-Y7, G, TV-G, PG, TV-PG, PG-13, TV-14, R, TV-MA, and NC-17. Check title details for ratings and content advisories. A series’ overall maturity level may reflect its highest-rated content, while an individual season can have a different rating.
Set up a Kids profile and safeguards on HBO Max
Create the Kids profile
- Open the profile menu and choose + New Profile.
- Select an avatar or skip that step, then enter the child’s name.
- Turn on Kids Mode and choose a Ratings group. On the US help page, the default is PG / TV-PG.
- Optionally turn on Kid-Proof Exit.
- Add the child’s birthdate and save.
The Kids profile’s ratings limit what the child can watch and find through search; its home screen and search results show titles allowed by those settings. You can edit profiles through Manage Profiles on a phone, tablet, or computer; profile editing is also available on TV.

Prevent switching to unrestricted profiles
With Kid-Proof Exit enabled, leaving the Kids profile requires the four-digit Parent Code. Also set a Profile PIN on each adult profile the child could access. HBO Max may prompt for the Parent Code when switching out of Kids mode, and requires the PIN to enter an adult profile protected by one.

HBO Max opens the last-used profile on computer, phone, and tablet. On TV, it opens the last-used Kids profile if one was used; after an adult profile was last used, it displays Who’s Watching. In a shared household, do not rely on the Kids profile rating alone: protect the adult profiles too.

Choose Disney+ profile ratings or Junior Mode
Disney+ lists Content ratings, Junior Mode, Profile PIN, Profile creation restriction, and Not Rated & Live Content among its parental controls. The service says controls can be managed using a supported web browser or the Disney+ mobile app, including while editing a profile. Start by editing the profile the child uses; Disney+’s materials indicate that non-Junior profiles may default to a family-friendly rating, so check rather than assume the default is right for your household.
On a regular profile, a selected content rating hides titles above that limit from browsing and search. Junior Mode provides an interface with series and movies selected for younger viewers. The Not Rated & Live Content control can prevent a profile from viewing live content without an assigned rating. A Profile PIN and profile-creation restriction address profile access, rather than changing the catalogue rating.

For current controls and available options, use the Disney+ parental controls help page and edit the relevant profile in a supported browser or mobile app. The exact menu labels and click-by-click route may vary; the current help materials identify the controls but do not establish one universal path.

Check the setup from the child’s profile
- Switch to the child’s profile and confirm the intended rating is selected.
- Search or browse for a title above that rating to see whether it is hidden or unavailable on that profile.
- On Netflix, add a title block when one specific show or movie is a concern despite its rating.
- On HBO Max, check Kid-Proof Exit and test the Parent Code, then confirm adult profiles the child could reach have Profile PINs.
- On Disney+, check whether Junior Mode or a regular rated profile fits your child, and review Profile PIN, profile-creation, and unrated/live-content controls as needed.
