OpenCode sends model requests; OpenRouter handles those requests and provides the billing controls. To limit charges, connect OpenCode with the OpenRouter API key you intend to use, then set a credit limit on that key in OpenRouter. For an organization-wide policy, add a member or key guardrail and verify that it blocks a request outside the policy.
How OpenCode and OpenRouter billing fit together
OpenCode is the client, while OpenRouter processes requests for the selected model. The model you choose in OpenCode determines where requests are routed; it does not, by itself, create a dollar limit. The spending controls described here are configured in your OpenRouter account, on the API key OpenCode uses, or through an organization guardrail.
OpenCode’s OpenRouter integration instructions use /connect to connect a provider and /models to choose a model. OpenCode’s provider documentation uses the format openrouter/<model-id> for an OpenRouter model. Confirm the model ID in the live catalog because available listings can change. See OpenCode’s provider documentation and OpenRouter’s OpenCode integration guide.
Set an individual spending limit
- Connect OpenCode with the intended API key. In OpenCode, run
/connect, select OpenRouter, and enter the API key you plan to use. Then run/modelsand select a model. If you configure a default model, use the current model ID from the catalog. - Set a credit limit on that OpenRouter key. In OpenRouter, configure the key’s optional credit
limitand, if appropriate, itslimit_resetcadence. Choose a cap and reset interval that suit your budget; OpenRouter’s documentation does not prescribe a universal amount. The cap belongs to the key, not to OpenCode’s model setting. OpenRouter documents these key fields and the key details endpoint in its API limits reference. - Check the key’s remaining allowance. Query
GET /api/v1/keyusing the relevant OpenRouter credential and inspectlimit_remaining. Check that you are looking at the same key OpenCode uses; a different key’s remaining allowance will not confirm the limit on OpenCode’s requests. - Review recorded use. Use OpenRouter’s Activity dashboard to inspect requests and spend. Its team guide describes grouping activity by creator, API key, or model: Set Up Team AI Spend Controls on OpenRouter.
Choose the right control for a team or organization
A per-key credit limit is useful when the policy is simply to cap the allowance of one API key. An organization guardrail is the stronger fit when a budget or model policy must apply to a member or key across requests. OpenRouter’s team setup guide, dated August 7, 2026, describes USD budgets with daily, weekly, or monthly resets, assignment to a member or API key, and model or provider allowlists. It says requests that exceed a guardrail are rejected with HTTP 403.

| Control | Scope | Enforcement and reset | Model or provider restriction | How to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Per-key credit limit | One API key | Optional key credit limit; reset cadence is configured for the key | No allowlist is specified by this control | Check limit_remaining through GET /api/v1/key and review Activity |
| Organization guardrail | An organization member or API key | Budget with daily, weekly, or monthly reset; requests over the guardrail are rejected with 403, according to OpenRouter’s August 7, 2026 team guide | Can use model or provider allowlists | Test the policy with a request that violates it, confirm denial, and review Activity attribution |
A preset is not the same as an enforced model restriction. OpenRouter’s team guide says a preset affects only requests that explicitly reference it. If a key must not be able to bypass a model restriction, use a guardrail model allowlist. The guide also describes organization credits and Activity reporting; consult its current instructions for the applicable account and interface.
Verify that the limit applies to OpenCode
Do not assume that seeing a configured cap proves OpenCode is using the capped key. Verify the credential and policy with a small, controlled request before relying on the limit for ongoing work.

- Confirm the API key connected in OpenCode is the key whose limit you configured.
- Record the key’s remaining allowance using
GET /api/v1/key, or note the applicable organization budget and Activity view. - Make a test request that complies with the policy and check that the remaining allowance or recorded activity changes as expected.
- For a guardrail, deliberately attempt a request that violates its budget or model/provider allowlist. Confirm that OpenRouter denies it, then check Activity to see whether the request is attributed to the intended key or creator.
Understand common spending and request errors
OpenRouter distinguishes account balance, an optional per-key credit cap, and—in eligible prepaid accounts—an in-flight spending budget. The in-flight budget reserves estimated token costs while paid requests run and during a short settlement window. It can cause a request to be rejected even if the account has a positive balance. OpenRouter says this mechanism does not apply to free-model requests, certain BYOK requests without paid plugins, or enterprise, paid-subscription, and invoice-billed accounts. Eligibility and billing behavior are account-dependent; see the current limits reference.
HTTP 402: identify the spending limit source
For a 402 response, inspect error.metadata.limit_source. OpenRouter documents these distinct causes:

openrouter_key_limit: the request reached the key’s credit limit. Check that key’s remaining allowance and usage.openrouter_in_flight_budget: current or recently completed requests are occupying the temporary budget. Honor the response’sRetry-Aftervalue and try again after the indicated wait.openrouter_credits: the account may lack sufficient credits, or the estimated cost of the request may exceed the available budget. Check account balance and request size. Reducing prompt size ormax_tokensmay help when the estimate is too large.
HTTP 429: rate limiting, not a dollar cap
A 429 concerns request rate, either at OpenRouter or at an upstream provider; it does not mean the API key’s dollar limit was reached. Follow retry information in the response where present. Free model variants can still have request limits, and a negative account credit balance may affect access, so switching to a free model is not a guarantee that every restriction disappears.
Use model selection to manage exposure, not as a budget control
OpenCode’s default model and routing preferences can help determine which models receive requests, but they are not a dollar cap. OpenRouter’s team guide specifically warns that a preset affects only requests that explicitly reference it. For an organization that must restrict which models or providers a key can use, configure a guardrail allowlist and verify that a disallowed request is rejected.

Keep billing terms and account details in perspective
OpenRouter’s August 7, 2026 team guide states that standard pay-as-you-go accounts have no minimum spend and that its 5.5% platform fee applies when credits are purchased, not per request. Billing terms can change, so check OpenRouter’s current account and billing information before relying on that figure. The same guide says organizations support up to 10 members by default, with higher limits available through support; this limit is likewise subject to change.
