OBS cannot recover a stream while the computer is off. To bring a 24/7 ambient stream back after a power outage, you need three separate things to work: the computer must power itself on when electricity returns, the operating system must launch OBS, and OBS must start streaming. Then verify how your streaming platform handles the interrupted live session; a successful OBS restart alone does not prove the same event or URL has resumed.
What the recovery setup depends on
Treat recovery as a chain, not a single OBS setting. A break at any point—power restoration, operating-system startup, OBS launch, network recovery, media availability, or the platform’s live-session behavior—can prevent the stream from returning as expected.
- Power: firmware tells the computer to turn on after AC power returns.
- Operating system: Windows or macOS launches OBS after startup. Login requirements or confirmation screens may still block unattended startup.
- OBS: a launch parameter starts streaming once OBS opens.
- Sources and network: the intended scene, media, audio, and internet connection must be available.
- Streaming platform: confirm whether it reconnects to the existing live event or expects a new one.
These steps can automate recovery, but they do not guarantee uninterrupted service or a return to the same live event.
1. Set the computer to power on when electricity returns
Look in your computer or motherboard’s firmware setup for a setting that controls what happens after AC power loss. The label and menu vary by manufacturer and model, so use the system maker’s manual for the exact path.

ASUS motherboard example
For the ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO example, the path is Advanced → APM Configuration → Restore AC Power Loss. Choose Power On to have the computer boot when power returns. ASUS also describes Power Off and Last State; the latter restores the prior power state. See ASUS’s AC power-loss guidance. ASUS notes that the feature depends on the AC power state and may not trigger if power is restored immediately after an outage.
Save the firmware change, then test it on the actual machine. Do not assume a similarly named option on another model behaves identically.
2. Make the operating system launch OBS
Windows 10 and 11: startup apps
Windows startup apps run when a user signs in; adding OBS there does not by itself prove that the computer will pass a sign-in screen unattended. Microsoft documents two places to manage them:
Recommended Free Tools
- Settings: Start → Settings → Apps → Startup.
- Task Manager: open Task Manager and select Startup apps.
Enable OBS if it appears in the list. See Microsoft’s startup-app instructions for Windows 10 and 11.

Windows: launch through a shortcut or scheduled task
OBS documents adding launch parameters to a Windows shortcut. Right-click the OBS shortcut, choose Properties, and append the needed parameter after the executable path in Target. For scheduled or other automated launches, set Start in to the folder containing obs64.exe. The actual installation path may differ from the example below. See the OBS launch-parameters guide.
A login-based startup method can stop at a sign-in screen, credential prompt, recovery screen, or confirmation dialog. Test the full startup path on the computer you intend to leave unattended; do not assume a scheduled launch bypasses every sign-in requirement.
macOS and Linux
OBS documents launching with parameters on macOS through an Automator application using open -a "OBS" --args --startstreaming, or by passing the same form in Terminal. Its launch-parameter guidance does not provide a complete current macOS login-item setup. The official material consulted here does not establish Linux desktop auto-launch steps, so use instructions for your specific desktop environment and validate them after a reboot.
3. Tell OBS to start streaming when it opens
OBS’s --startstreaming launch parameter starts streaming automatically when OBS launches. Add it to the shortcut target or automated launch command as appropriate. A Windows target can follow this form:

"C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe" --startstreaming
The path is an example; use the location of your own obs64.exe. OBS also documents parameters such as --profile "name", --collection "name", and --scene "name" to select a profile, scene collection, or scene. Choose these only if your startup should use a specific configuration. Keep your stream key private: do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs.
4. Test the entire outage-recovery chain
Before relying on unattended operation, test a controlled restart and check every link in the chain. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends checking output settings and testing for a few minutes; its auto-configuration wizard considers hardware and network conditions. See the OBS Quick Start Guide.
- Confirm the computer boots after power is restored, using the firmware setting you selected.
- Check whether the operating system reaches a usable state without someone entering credentials or dismissing a prompt.
- Verify OBS opens with the intended profile, scene collection, and scene.
- Confirm that media and audio sources are available after reboot and that the network reconnects.
- Check that OBS reaches a live state and inspect the streaming service’s live dashboard to learn what happened to the interrupted event.
Do not treat OBS opening—or even showing a streaming state—as proof that the platform resumed the same event or preserved its live URL. Confirm this behavior with the service and settings you actually use before depending on it.

Check that the computer can handle the stream
A machine that meets OBS’s compatibility requirements is not automatically capable of streaming a particular scene reliably. OBS says CPU demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. A demanding ambient-video scene can behave differently from a simple still-image scene, so test your actual sources and output settings. See OBS’s system requirements.
Would a UPS help?
A UPS can keep the streaming computer and network equipment powered through a brief interruption. It serves a different purpose from firmware auto-power-on: it may bridge a short outage, but it does not configure the computer to boot after a longer outage or ensure OBS relaunches. Runtime depends on the connected equipment and load; calculate those before choosing a unit rather than assuming a particular duration.
Recording alongside the stream
If OBS is also recording locally, an interrupted power supply can leave MP4 or MOV files unfinalized and potentially unrecoverable. OBS’s current English localization file suggests MKV when recording multiple audio tracks, followed by remuxing after recording; because that file is on a mutable development branch, check OBS’s current interface and guidance before relying on version-specific recording instructions. See the OBS English localization file.

| Symptom | Likely point of failure | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The computer stays off after power returns | Firmware power-loss behavior | Confirm the setting is enabled and configured to power on; verify the exact behavior in the machine’s manual. ASUS notes that timing and AC power state can affect its feature. |
| The computer boots but OBS does not open | OS startup, sign-in, or launch configuration | Check Windows startup apps or the automated task, and look for sign-in, credential, recovery, or confirmation prompts. For automated Windows launches, verify the OBS shortcut’s Start in folder. |
| OBS opens but does not start streaming | Launch parameter or OBS output configuration | Confirm --startstreaming is appended correctly to the launch command, then check OBS output settings and run a short test. |
| OBS starts, but the stream does not become viewable | Network, sources, or platform session | Check internet connectivity, source availability, OBS’s live state, and the platform dashboard. The launch flag alone does not establish what the platform does with an interrupted event. |
| The stream runs but the computer struggles | Encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene load | Re-test with the actual scene and output settings; OBS notes that requirements vary with these demands. |
Or let it run in the cloud
