To make OBS retry a 24/7 waterfall stream after a connection drop, open Settings → Output, use Advanced output mode if needed, and enable Automatically Reconnect. Set a retry delay and maximum retry count suited to your connection and destination. If OBS itself closes or crashes, this output setting will not relaunch it: that requires a separate process supervisor.
Set OBS to reconnect its stream output
- Open the output settings. In OBS Studio, select Settings → Output. If the streaming controls are not visible, change Output Mode to Advanced. Layout can differ by OBS release and output mode.
- Find the streaming reconnect controls. Enable Automatically Reconnect, then set Retry Delay and Maximum Retries. These labels appear in the current English interface strings, though their exact placement may vary.
- Choose a policy, not a universal number. OBS does not publish one delay or retry limit that fits every destination. Consider how long you want OBS to keep trying and the platform’s reconnect behavior; consult the destination’s current guidance for your stream configuration.
- Test the recovery path. Confirm that a temporary connection interruption triggers retries and that the output returns. Test safely before leaving a waterfall stream unattended.
OBS’s documented output API describes a maximum retry count and starting wait; in the OBS 29.0.0 API reference consulted, the wait doubles on each retry. That implementation detail is version-dependent, so do not assume the same backoff behavior in every release.
Reconnect is not the same as restarting OBS
Automatically Reconnect is for a supported stream output that loses its connection while OBS is still running. It does not relaunch OBS after the application exits or crashes, and it cannot guarantee that the platform will preserve one continuous broadcast or archive.
OBS documents the launch parameter --startstreaming, which starts streaming when OBS launches. To recover from an OBS crash, you also need a separate operating-system task or process supervisor to detect that OBS has exited and start it again. Configure that launcher to use the intended OBS profile, scene collection, and stream destination, then test the complete chain. The launch parameter alone is not a crash watchdog.

Diagnose what actually stopped the waterfall
Before changing settings, identify whether the network disconnected, OBS stopped its output, OBS exited, or YouTube ended the broadcast. Each failure needs a different recovery step. OBS’s troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, associates dropped frames and intermittent disconnections with an unstable route to the ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain.
- Try another ingest server. If the destination offers server choices, test a different one; the route to one server may be unreliable.
- Set bitrate to what the connection can sustain. Lower it based on stable upload capacity and the service’s limits. Dynamic bitrate may reduce quality as a fallback, but it does not fix the underlying network problem.
- Review network settings. OBS recommends checking Bind to IP. On Windows, network optimization/TCP pacing and IPv4-only can be tested; if IPv4-only makes no difference, OBS recommends restoring the IPv4/IPv6 default.
- Check the network path and software. Firewall or antivirus rules, VPNs, bundled network utilities, outdated network drivers, unstable Wi-Fi, modem/router connectivity, and faulty cables, adapters, or network devices can all contribute.
- Prefer wired Ethernet for the streaming computer. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable. A cable is relevant if you use Wi-Fi or have identified a cable fault; it will not resolve an ISP, ingest-server, software, or bitrate problem.
- Ask the ISP before replacing equipment when the fault is unclear. OBS advises contacting the ISP if troubleshooting does not resolve the issue and consulting it before replacing hardware if you are unsure the equipment is faulty.
Check YouTube’s behavior separately
OBS reconnect settings govern OBS’s output attempts, not YouTube’s broadcast state or archive continuity. Platform behavior and reconnect windows depend on the destination and stream configuration; the OBS guidance does not establish a universal promise of seamless continuity. Check YouTube’s current guidance for the specific setup, and do not promise viewers an uninterrupted broadcast solely because OBS retries.

For a waterfall stream, also make sure the video and audio you broadcast are yours to use or otherwise appropriately licensed. A stream staying live does not make copyrighted material permissible, and platform rules can affect whether a broadcast remains available.
