In OBS, set Settings → Video → Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720, start at 30 FPS, then choose a bitrate your connection can sustain steadily. YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum and 8 Mbps as recommended for 720p H.264, but a speed-test peak is not proof that your connection can hold a bitrate throughout a stream. Test with your planned content and watch stream health before relying on the setup.
Set OBS to output 720p
- Open Settings → Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720. This controls the resolution OBS sends to YouTube. The Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace where you arrange sources; it can remain at your monitor or game resolution while OBS scales the output to 720p. Changing the canvas alone does not set the stream output to 720p. OBS explains video resolution settings.
- Start at 30 FPS. Under constrained bandwidth or computer resources, 30 FPS is a cautious first test. OBS notes that 60-FPS streaming can be substantially more demanding on the system. YouTube lists the same H.264 bitrate range for 720p30 and 720p60, but that does not mean every computer or encoder can handle either setting equally well.
- Measure stable upload capacity. Run an upload speed test as YouTube recommends, preferably under the network conditions and at the time you expect to stream. Use the stable capacity you can sustain, not a momentary peak, and account for other devices using the connection. YouTube’s figures are platform guidance, not a guarantee for your ISP, location, or route to its ingest server.
- Set the encoder output. In OBS, open Settings → Output and choose the video bitrate based on your sustained upload capacity and the codec’s YouTube guidance below. In OBS’s output mode, the setting may be shown under the Streaming section. YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval (do not exceed 4 seconds), and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings. For stereo audio, YouTube lists 128 Kbps. Follow the current settings shown for your account and encoder if labels or guidance change.
- Test representative content. Before a continuous stream, test with the audio, movement, and scenes you actually plan to use. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s dropped-frame indicator during the test. A static screen can hide problems that appear with fast motion or more complex scenes.
Choose a bitrate for 720p
YouTube Help’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists the following live recommendations. The table is not specific to India and cannot predict the stable upload speed available on an individual connection.

If your stable upload cannot sustain YouTube’s listed minimum for the codec you use, lower the bitrate and test the quality, or reduce the output resolution. A lower bitrate may make the image less clear, especially during movement. There is no preset that can ensure continuity when the connection is unstable or too limited.
Use OBS’s 75% heuristic carefully
OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance, dated 2024-09-30, suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic when selecting or lowering video bitrate to address dropped frames. Treat it as a troubleshooting estimate, not a YouTube rule or a guarantee: total speed-test results may not represent the stable capacity of the route to YouTube’s ingest server.

Why a fast speed test can still drop frames
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. A speed test captures a result at a particular time; congestion, Wi-Fi interference, other devices, network software, a VPN, router conditions, or the path to the ingest server can still interrupt a live stream. The test that matters is a representative stream while monitoring OBS and YouTube stream health.
- Lower video bitrate first. This reduces the upload demand. Test again with your normal content rather than relying on a brief static preview.
- Try Ethernet if Wi-Fi may be unstable. OBS recommends a wired connection when Wi-Fi is a possible problem. A cable can improve the local link, but it cannot raise the upload capacity supplied by your ISP or solve congestion elsewhere.
- Consider OBS dynamic bitrate as a fallback. It can reduce bitrate during congestion, but the resulting stream quality also falls and the feature does not fix the underlying connection problem.
- If drops continue at a conservative bitrate, investigate the route. Check network software, VPN and router conditions, try another ingest server if one is available, and contact your ISP if needed. OBS notes that a network-to-ingest stability issue may not be inside OBS itself.
Broadcaster settings and viewer quality are different
OBS resolution and bitrate determine what you send to YouTube. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That gives viewers playback-quality choices; it does not repair a broadcaster-side connection that cannot reliably deliver the incoming stream.
