To loop prerecorded lessons through OBS, add them to a VLC Video Source, enable Loop Playlist, then connect OBS to a YouTube Live stream using RTMPS. This can play lessons continuously while OBS and your computer stay running, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted uptime, a complete YouTube archive, or monetization eligibility.

Before you start

  • Install OBS and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video Source requires VLC; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
  • Prepare local video files in the order you want lessons to play. Confirm that you have the necessary rights to stream the videos, audio, images, and other material.
  • Make sure your YouTube channel is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance states that the minimum age for live streaming is 16. See YouTube’s live-stream setup requirements.

Set up a looping playlist in OBS

  1. Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose the scene that will carry the education broadcast.
  2. Add the playlist source. In the Sources box, select + and choose VLC Video Source. Name the source if helpful, then open its properties.
  3. Add the lesson videos. In the source properties, add your local media files to the playlist and arrange them in the intended order. OBS describes the VLC source as supporting multiple media items, similar to an image slideshow.
  4. Set playback behavior. Leave Loop Playlist enabled. OBS documents this setting as On by default; it restarts the source after the media list finishes. Set Shuffle Playlist according to your teaching plan: Off preserves lesson order, while On randomizes playback.
  5. Check visibility behavior. OBS documents the default as stopping playback while the source is not visible and restarting it when visible. If the source is hidden in other scenes and you expect it to keep playing, change the behavior and test it before broadcasting.
  6. Preview the complete scene. Play through the transition between files and listen for missing, unexpectedly loud, or disruptive audio. Confirm the lesson image fits the canvas and that no unintended blank or silent sections appear. OBS lists these controls in its Media Sources guide.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you will use.
  2. Copy the stream key and server details shown for that stream. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or the appropriate custom service option, and enter the details. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it.
  3. Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends the encrypted RTMP variant and recommends H.264 over RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). Set bitrate for your chosen resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s current encoder settings; there is no single bitrate that fits every output.
  4. Check that your sustained upstream bandwidth can support the selected bitrate with upload headroom. A connection that only barely reaches the target can lead to dropped frames or an unstable stream. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing with representative audio and video and monitoring stream health.
  5. Start a test stream and inspect both the OBS preview and YouTube’s stream-health indicators before relying on the setup for a long broadcast.

HLS is an alternative protocol, not a drop-in setting to choose casually. YouTube describes it as higher latency and specifies additional encoder and transport requirements, including 1–4 second TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte-range mode, and no encryption other than HTTPS. Use it only when OBS and the YouTube stream settings are deliberately configured for HLS; see YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Plan for a long-running broadcast

Do not rely on YouTube for a complete 24/7 archive

YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream when it is under 12 hours, and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous broadcast therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed full replay. If you need the entire programme, configure local recording and periodically confirm that the file is being written and contains usable audio and video. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Test how you will recover

A looping source only repeats while OBS is running and able to send the stream. Decide how you will respond to OBS stopping, a computer restart, power loss, or an internet interruption, and test those failure cases before depending on the channel. Keep the computer powered and prevent scheduled sleep or shutdown. Local power backup or a second connection may help in some setups, but the right choice depends on your location and needs; YouTube does not prescribe a particular India-based ISP, UPS size, or hardware configuration.

Rights and monetization matter for education channels

Only stream material for which you have the necessary rights. YouTube places responsibility for rights and compliance with the rules in the stream territory on the provider. Its systems scan live streams for third-party content; a match can replace the stream with a placeholder or interrupt or terminate it. Even when you have a licence, a rights holder may need to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and copyright guidance.

Putting existing lessons into a continuous loop does not by itself make a channel eligible for monetization. YouTube’s policy applies to live streams and expects original, authentic content. Its 2025 update renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content”; generic, repetitive, mass-produced, or reused material can be ineligible. Make the educational value and your contribution clear, and review YouTube’s monetization policies rather than assuming a 24/7 schedule qualifies.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
VLC Video Source is missing or does not work VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC and match the architecture; OBS documentation calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
The playlist stops after the last file Loop Playlist is off, or playback is being affected by source visibility. Enable Loop Playlist, then check Visibility Behaviour and test the source in the scene used for the stream.
Lessons play in an unexpected order Shuffle Playlist is enabled or the file order is wrong. Turn shuffle off for a fixed curriculum sequence and arrange the files in the intended order.
Stream health reports instability or OBS drops frames The chosen bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or output settings may not match the connection. Check the current YouTube bitrate guidance for your resolution and frame rate, leave upload headroom, and test while monitoring stream health.
The stream is interrupted after copyrighted content appears YouTube detected third-party material, or a licence is not reflected in Content ID permissions. Stop using material without streaming rights; if licensed, ask the rights holder whether the channel must be allowlisted.
A full replay is missing The continuous stream exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. Use local recording if a complete archive is important, and verify that the recording is being written.
