To set a no-go zone, open your robot vacuum’s saved map, find its map-editing controls, draw or place the exclusion area, and save it. To adjust edge cleaning, look in the app’s cleaning preferences or modes: some robots have a dedicated edge-cleaning toggle, while others include edge coverage in a cleaning pattern. The exact controls depend on the model and app.
Before you change the map
Identify your robot’s exact model and app, then check that the app has a saved, up-to-date map of your home. Map-based restrictions depend on that map being accurate. On the Roborock S4, for example, Map Saving must be enabled before virtual no-go zones can be used.
Manufacturers use different names for map boundaries. Look for terms such as No-Go Zone, Keep-Out Zone, forbidden area, Virtual Wall, or Invisible Wall. A virtual wall is generally a boundary line; a zone usually marks an area. Check your model’s instructions rather than assuming every label works the same way.
How to add a no-go zone
- Open the robot’s map. Confirm that the correct saved map is active and that the robot is assigned to the right floor or level, if your app supports multiple maps.
- Open map editing or boundary controls. Find the option for no-go areas, virtual walls, or the equivalent term used by your manufacturer.
- Place the restriction over the area to avoid. Resize or move the zone to cover the whole area. If the app offers a virtual wall, place it across the route you want blocked.
- Save the change and review the map. Make sure the area is marked where you intended and that the map still reflects the room layout.
Roborock S4 example
For the S4, Roborock’s Mi Home instructions say to enable Map Saving, return to the map, choose Edit Map, select No Go Zone, add the zone, adjust its size or position, and save. The S4 tutorial describes a limit of up to 10 No Go Zones. It also describes adding and positioning a Virtual Wall. These labels, steps, and the limit apply to that S4 flow; other models or app versions may differ. See Roborock’s S4 setup guide.

Choose a no-go or no-mop zone on a combo robot
On a vacuum-and-mop robot, the two zone types can have different effects. A no-go zone generally excludes the marked area from cleaning; a no-mop zone can let the robot vacuum there while keeping its mop away. Confirm the definitions for your model before saving the map.
Dreame’s app guide, for example, says to select the robot, open its device page, choose No-Go Zone/Virtual Wall, mark the relevant map area, and confirm. In its terminology, a No-Go Zone blocks both vacuuming and mopping, while a No-Mop Zone permits vacuuming but prevents mopping. iRobot also distinguishes Keep-Out Zones from No-Mop Zones on combo robots. See Dreame’s zone instructions and iRobot’s zone guidance.

How to change edge-cleaning behavior
Check both cleaning preferences and cleaning modes. Edge coverage is not controlled the same way on every robot: it may be a named setting, part of a selected route, or not exposed as a separate control.
Xiaomi S20: use the edge-cleaning toggle
For the Xiaomi S20, open the Mi Home/Xiaomi Home app, select the device card, tap the three-dot menu in the upper corner, and turn on Clean up along the edges. Xiaomi says the robot identifies the cleaning area, follows its edge, and returns to the charging dock after cleaning. The instructions are specific to the S20; see Xiaomi UK Support’s S20 FAQ.

Selected Roomba 900-series models: Edge Clean preference
iRobot documents an Edge Clean setting for selected Roomba 900-series models. It is on by default in the described case, and can be disabled for a quicker clean; iRobot warns that disabling it may leave parts of the floor uncovered. Its cleaning-preference overview names the 980 and 960 for the documented preference, so do not assume this control appears on every Roomba. See iRobot’s Edge Clean article and its cleaning-preference overview.
LG: edge coverage may depend on the mode
LG describes Zigzag mode as faster because it does not spend time cleaning corners or walls, while Perfect cleaning mode includes walls and edges. That is a mode choice rather than necessarily a standalone edge toggle, and LG notes that the available modes or their presentation may differ by model. See LG’s cleaning-modes guidance.

- App zones are not safety barriers. Roborock warns that its virtual zones should customize the cleaning area, not isolate hazards. Use a physical safety measure for dangerous areas.
- Check the map after moving the robot or changing the home. Roborock’s S4 manual says manually moving the robot or making significant changes to the environment may cause saved zones or barriers to be lost. Review the map and restrictions after either change. See the Roborock S4 manual.
- Verify accessory compatibility. A boundary accessory is not universally supported. Roborock says the Q7 Max does not recognize a magnetic strip and directs owners to use an Invisible Wall or No-Go Zone in the app instead. See Roborock’s Q7 Max FAQ.
- Check how many zones and maps your model supports. Limits and persistence behavior are model-specific; the S4’s published limit of up to 10 zones should not be generalized to other robots.
What to compare when choosing a robot vacuum
If map restrictions or edge coverage matter to your home, check the exact model’s official documentation for these features before buying:
Quick Recap
- Saved-map support and any prerequisite for using map edits.
- Available boundaries, such as rectangular no-go zones, no-mop zones, or virtual walls.
- Whether restrictions persist across cleaning jobs and any published limit on their number.
- Whether edge coverage has a dedicated toggle, is part of a cleaning mode, or is not separately configurable.
- Any coverage trade-off: a faster route may skip walls or edges, while disabling an edge pass may leave floor areas uncovered.
- Compatibility with your app version, region, and the exact robot model.
