There is no single daily social-media limit that is right for every child. Set a few clear, shared rules that protect sleep, schoolwork, physical activity, meals, and relationships, then adjust them based on how your child is doing. Built-in device and app controls can help enforce the agreement, but they work best alongside regular conversation.
Why a single daily number is not enough
A timer can show how long a child has been online, but it cannot tell you what that use displaced or how it affected them. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends an individualized family media plan focused on healthy routines rather than a universal social-media-minute ceiling. Consider whether use is interfering with sleep, exercise, schoolwork, reading, hobbies, or in-person friendships.
Social media use is widespread among teens, but the figures below describe studies cited in the U.S. Surgeon General’s 2023 advisory summary, not 2026 prevalence measurements. Up to 95% of young people ages 13–17 reported using a social-media platform; nearly two thirds of teenagers reported daily use, and one third reported using it “almost constantly.” A survey found teenagers averaged 3.5 hours a day on social media. These figures provide context, not a recommended allowance for an individual child. HHS: Social Media and Youth Mental Health
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe advisory also reports that more than three hours a day was associated with double the risk of certain mental-health problems, including symptoms of depression and anxiety. That is an association, not proof that screen time alone causes those outcomes. In a cited survey, 46% of adolescents ages 13–17 said social media made them feel worse about their body image. The advisory notes evidence gaps: it says the government cannot conclude social media is sufficiently safe for children and adolescents. Family rules are one part of a broader response, not a guarantee of safety.

Start by talking, not by setting a timer
Ask what your child enjoys online, what they do on social media, and how it affects their mood. Find out whether anything online feels uncomfortable, and what they would like more time to do offline. For younger teens, ask about both online and in-person friendships and check in regularly without assuming that every interaction is harmful.
Use the conversation to identify what needs protecting in your family’s routine. A child who is sleeping well and keeping up with school may need a different plan from one whose late-night scrolling is affecting rest or whose use repeatedly interrupts family activities. For ages 10–14, the AAP’s “5 Cs” framework encourages caregivers to consider the child, content, calming, crowding out, and communication, and to involve young teens in choosing and putting rules into practice. Choose a few boundaries that fit your household
Begin with rules that address the specific problem you identified. Too many restrictions at once can be hard to follow; a small number of predictable boundaries is easier to explain and review.
- Protect meals and shared time: Make meals or another regular family activity device-free.
- Protect sleep: Keep phones out of bedrooms at night, or agree on a screen-free period before bed.
- Reduce endless prompts: Consider turning off autoplay and nonessential notifications.
- Set a time limit where useful: Use built-in device or app settings to set limits on access or time, particularly if a child has trouble stopping independently.
- Agree on attention: Consider a one-screen-at-a-time rule so social media does not run alongside homework or another activity.
These are options, not a checklist every family must adopt. Explain the reason for each rule and make it clear what the child can do when the device is put away. Reading, outdoor play, hobbies, family games, or seeing friends can make a limit feel like a way to make room for something rather than simply a lost privilege.

Make the agreement shared, clear, and realistic
For an older child or teen, invite input on which boundaries are workable and how to handle exceptions. Caregivers should follow the household’s device-free routines too; rules are easier to accept when adults model them. Be specific about when a rule applies, what happens when a limit is reached, and how the family will revisit it. Expect some disagreement while a new routine is taking hold, and follow through consistently.
Write the agreement down if that helps everyone remember it. The AAP’s Family Media Plan offers a way to set expectations around media, routines, and alternatives. As the AAP puts it, “Remember, plans should evolve as your child matures and develops.”

Use controls as support, not as the whole plan
Devices and platforms may offer settings for app or site access, content, time, chat, and spending, as well as screen-time tracking. The exact labels and available controls vary by device and service, so check the settings on the child’s device and in the apps they use. A tracker can help you notice patterns; it cannot determine by itself whether the use is healthy.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Controls are most useful when children understand the boundaries and can talk about what they see online. Invite your child to show you the apps or features they use, explain what a setting is meant to protect, and make room for questions. The AAP notes that controls and limits work better alongside positive communication and relationship-building. AAP: Parental Controls and Healthy Media Limits
Review the plan by looking at effects
After trying the agreement for a short period, check whether the routines it was meant to protect are improving. Review it again when school schedules or family needs change, and as your child becomes more independent. Focus on observable effects rather than treating a particular minute count as a measure of success.
- Is social media disrupting sleep or physical activity?
- Are grades slipping, homework being missed, or family activities being skipped?
- Does your child become unusually irritable when access ends, or seem unable to stop using an app?
- Is online activity interfering with friendships or other interests?
If these concerns persist, discuss them with your child’s pediatrician. The AAP identifies disrupted sleep or exercise, lower grades, missed activities, irritability when access ends, compulsive use, and interference with friendships as possible signs that media use needs attention.
