For a 24/7 YouTube yoga stream, configure recovery where the failure occurs: FFmpeg’s -reconnect flags handle HTTP inputs, not a failed outgoing RTMP connection. For RTMP output, use FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer with -attempt_recovery 1 and a retry wait. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), two-second keyframes, and testing the stream before going live.

Choose the recovery options for the failing connection

An FFmpeg command can read a source and publish to YouTube, and those are separate connections. HTTP protocol reconnect flags apply to an HTTP input. They do not reconnect an outgoing RTMP/RTMPS publishing connection. FFmpeg documents output recovery using the FIFO muxer, including an RTMP example that retries every second. See FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol documentation and FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation.

  • HTTP input fails: configure HTTP reconnect options on that input, before its -i.
  • YouTube publishing connection fails: use FIFO output recovery on the RTMP/RTMPS output.
  • FFmpeg exits, the source ends, or credentials are invalid: reconnect flags alone do not solve those problems. They need separate operational handling.

FFmpeg’s master documentation and source can change, and an older installed build may not support every option described below. Check the options available in your installed FFmpeg binary before relying on them.

Configure recovery for outgoing RTMPS publishing

This pattern adapts FFmpeg’s documented FIFO/RTMP example for a source that already provides video and audio. Replace the input, stream endpoint, and mapping as appropriate:

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac
  -f fifo -fifo_format flv
  -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1
  -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
  -map 0:v -map 0:a
  "rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_ENDPOINT/YOUR_PRIVATE_STREAM_KEY"
  1. Set the input. Replace INPUT with the actual file or source. The example uses -re to read at native rate; whether it belongs in your command depends on the input and intended workflow.
  2. Choose stream mapping and encoding. The example maps the first video and audio streams and encodes H.264 video and AAC audio. Adapt codecs and mapping to your source and YouTube setup.
  3. Keep FIFO recovery with the output. -f fifo -fifo_format flv wraps the FLV output in the FIFO muxer. -attempt_recovery 1 enables recovery attempts, and -recovery_wait_time 1 sets a one-second wait between attempts, as in FFmpeg’s example.
  4. Choose an overflow policy deliberately. -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 lets encoding continue if the FIFO queue fills, at the cost of dropping queued packets. Without dropping, the process may block while the muxer catches up. Choose whether keeping processing moving or preserving queued packets matters more for your use.
  5. Use the current YouTube endpoint and key. Get the RTMPS ingest endpoint and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private; do not expose it in shell history, logs, screenshots, or public examples.

This is an adaptation, not a tested command for every source, FFmpeg build, or YouTube account. Recovery is not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback. It cannot repair a permanently invalid source or key, and a source that ends needs separate handling.

Add HTTP reconnect flags only for an HTTP input

If FFmpeg reads a live HTTP or HLS source as well as publishing to YouTube, place the protocol options before the relevant input’s -i. For example:

ffmpeg -reconnect 1
  -reconnect_streamed 1
  -reconnect_on_network_error 1
  -reconnect_delay_max 30
  -i "HTTP_INPUT_URL"
  ... output options ...

The 30-second delay cap is an illustrative operator choice, not an FFmpeg or YouTube recommendation. FFmpeg’s HTTP documentation describes these controls, but the precise options available depend on the installed build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • -reconnect 1 enables reconnect behavior for the HTTP protocol.
  • -reconnect_streamed 1 covers streamed, non-seekable inputs.
  • -reconnect_on_network_error 1 covers TCP/TLS errors during connection.
  • -reconnect_delay_max 30 caps the reconnect delay before giving up.

EOF handling is a separate decision. -reconnect_at_eof treats end-of-file as an error and may suit an intended endless source, but should not be enabled blindly for a finite file. HTTP status retries can be configured with -reconnect_on_http_error, including selected retryable statuses; choose the status policy for the source rather than assuming every HTTP error should be retried.

Set YouTube encoder parameters for the yoga stream

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), preflight testing, and monitoring stream health. Its current guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codec options and supports up to 60 fps. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

The following H.264 bitrate figures are YouTube Help recommendations, not guarantees of stable service or suitable upload capacity for a particular location. YouTube’s page was accessed in 2026 and does not display a publication year.

720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps 3 Mbps

For a mostly static yoga view, 30 fps may be a reasonable starting point, but that is an editorial inference, not a measured recommendation for an Indian connection. Choose the resolution and bitrate for the image detail, movement, encoder capacity, and sustained upload capacity you can support. A speed test and a representative test stream are more useful than assuming that a listed bitrate will work on every connection.

Troubleshoot reconnect and stream failures

Symptom or cause What to check or change
HTTP reconnect flags do not recover the YouTube output They apply to HTTP input handling. Use FIFO output recovery for outgoing RTMP/RTMPS.
An option appears ineffective or is rejected Check the installed binary’s help and version-specific documentation. Put HTTP options before the relevant -i; keep FIFO muxer and recovery options with the output they control.
The FIFO queue fills Decide whether to allow packet dropping with -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 or let processing block while the muxer catches up. Dropping can omit part of the stream.
Retries continue but the stream does not recover Inspect FFmpeg logs, the source URL, the stream key, YouTube Live Control Room messages, account setup, and platform state. Retries cannot fix invalid credentials or a permanently failed source.
The stream stops after a crash, machine restart, or resource exhaustion FIFO output retries work only while FFmpeg remains active. If running your own host, configure separate process supervision, such as an operating-system service manager.
Viewers see interruptions despite retries Recovery cannot promise an uninterrupted experience. Check source continuity, network stability, encoder capacity, and YouTube stream-health messages.

What changes for a stream run from India?

The FFmpeg option semantics and YouTube encoder settings described here are general, not India-specific. The reviewed official guidance does not prescribe different reconnect flags for India, specify an India-only ingest endpoint, or compare local ISPs or cloud regions. Use the endpoint shown in your own YouTube Live Control Room and evaluate the actual sustained upload capacity and stream health of your connection or host.
