Set FFmpeg’s video bitrate to YouTube’s live-ingest recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate—then make sure it stays comfortably below the upload capacity you can sustain on the actual connection. A fiber plan’s advertised speed, especially its download speed, does not tell you whether a 24/7 stream will remain stable.

For H.264 SDR, YouTube’s live guidance lists 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30. Those are recommendations, not guarantees or universal minimums. Measure upload performance from the streaming computer, leave headroom for overhead and other household traffic, and lower the profile if the connection fluctuates.

Choose a YouTube Live bitrate for your actual output format

Do not use YouTube’s prerecorded-upload bitrate table to configure a live encoder. YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions specify values by ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate. The H.264 figures below are YouTube recommendations and minimums, not independent measurements of Indian broadband. YouTube’s help page does not state a publication year, and its recommendations may change.

H.264 live format YouTube-listed minimum YouTube recommendation
360p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
480p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

The minimum is not the same as the recommended target. A minimum can be a useful reference when a connection cannot sustain the recommendation, but choosing it does not guarantee acceptable quality. Higher resolution and frame rate generally need more bitrate for comparable detail, and fast motion or intricate imagery can be harder to encode than static content. YouTube’s page also provides separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265/HEVC; use the row for the codec actually sent to YouTube rather than applying H.264 values to another codec.

Convert the target into FFmpeg options

For an H.264 stream encoded with libx264, -b:v sets the target video bitrate, -maxrate limits peak rate, and -bufsize sets the rate-control buffer. The following is an illustrative command for a 30 fps source, using a 5 Mbps video rate and a two-second GOP. It is not a tested, universal command: check your FFmpeg build, input properties, encoder availability, and YouTube Live Control Room status.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv "rtmps://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/STREAM_KEY"

In this example, 5 Mbps is the video target, not a recommendation for every stream; replace it with a suitable value for your chosen profile and tested connection. At 30 fps, -g 60 requests a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds. For a 60 fps stream, a two-second GOP would be 120 frames. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its live guidance also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, and AAC or MP3 audio.

Matching -b:v and -maxrate is a common way to seek CBR-like behavior with x264; it does not make every encoder or network deliver perfectly constant traffic. The buffer affects short-term rate variation. The sample’s 10M buffer is an example, not a YouTube requirement. FFmpeg options and supported encoders can vary by build, so check the installed build and review the ingest status in Live Control Room before relying on the setup.

Keep the stream key private

Replace STREAM_KEY with the key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, log, or support post. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live settings and update the FFmpeg command.

Check whether Indian fiber upload can sustain the stream

There is no single bitrate that can be declared safe for Indian fiber broadband as a whole. The right choice depends on your location, ISP plan, measured upload, time-of-day variation, and other devices using the same connection. No India-wide ISP upload rate, 24/7 uptime guarantee, or universal fair-use or data-cap rule is established by the platform guidance cited here.

  1. Measure upload from the streaming setup. Run speed tests on the computer and network that will send the stream. Test at likely busy times as well as quieter periods. A speed test is only a snapshot, not proof of uninterrupted capacity.
  2. Use upload, not download, as the constraint. YouTube’s streaming tips note that inbound bandwidth is often greater than outbound bandwidth and recommend leaving room between total outgoing bitrate and available upload bandwidth. The guidance gives 20% headroom as a recommendation.
  3. Count the whole household uplink. Your stream consumes video and audio bandwidth, plus protocol overhead. Calls, cloud backups, uploads, and other users’ activity also compete for upload capacity. Do not set the encoder equal to the best upload result from a test.
  4. Test the real stream before relying on it. Send representative content with the expected audio and motion, then inspect YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring health during the stream.
  5. Back off if capacity varies. Reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate until the stream has margin during weaker periods. A stable lower-resolution profile is preferable to a higher profile that pushes the uplink to its limit.

Plan for continuous operation, not just a correct bitrate

Bitrate cannot prevent interruptions caused by local power loss, a router or ONT reboot, overheating, a stalled source file, or an ISP outage. For a 24/7 setup, assess power and network continuity, the machine’s thermal behavior, whether the input can loop as intended, and how the process will be monitored and restarted. YouTube’s guidance supports preflight testing and health monitoring; it does not promise uninterrupted service from a particular Indian ISP.

Troubleshoot buffering, dropped frames, and ingest failures

Symptom Possible cause What to check or change
YouTube reports unstable stream health or dropped frames The outgoing rate is too close to available upload capacity, or other traffic is consuming uplink bandwidth. Check upload during the problem period, pause competing uploads if possible, and reduce bitrate or output resolution/frame rate. Test the revised profile while monitoring stream health.
The stream works at quiet times but fails during busy periods A speed test at one time did not capture the connection’s variation or household demand. Repeat upload tests at likely busy times and choose a profile that leaves margin at weaker periods, not just at the best measured rate.
FFmpeg cannot connect or YouTube shows no incoming video The ingest address or stream key may be wrong, the key may have been reset, or the selected output format may not match the setup. Confirm the current RTMPS ingest URL and key in YouTube Live Control Room, keep the key private, and inspect FFmpeg’s error output and YouTube’s ingest status.
Video is choppy even though the bitrate appears sufficient The source may have demanding motion or detail, the frame rate may be mismatched, or the encoder may not keep up with the machine. Check source frame rate and encoder load. Try a lower frame rate, resolution, or bitrate; verify the installed FFmpeg encoder and test with representative content.
The stream stops after running for a while The cause may be outside bitrate control, such as local power or network interruption, a process failure, or a source/loop issue. Check machine and router/ONT uptime, heat, source-file continuity, and FFmpeg logs. Add monitoring and a recovery/restart plan; the bitrate alone cannot ensure continuous operation.
