In OBS Studio, open Settings → Output, switch Output Mode to Advanced, select your streaming encoder, and enter any extra parameters only in that encoder’s custom-options field. The accepted names and syntax depend on the encoder, OBS version, hardware, drivers, and streaming service—there is no universal parameter string that works across NVENC, x264, AMD AMF, Quick Sync, and FFmpeg.
Where to enter extra encoder parameters in OBS
- Open Settings → Output and set Output Mode to Advanced.
- Choose the Streaming tab and check which encoder is selected. Identify the exact implementation before adding an option; an NVENC property is not automatically valid for x264 or another encoder.
- Open the selected encoder’s settings. If it provides a custom-options field, enter only properties supported by that encoder. OBS’s AMF/FFmpeg interface describes an
option=valuefield; its example,level=5.2 profile=main, illustrates syntax rather than a recommended streaming configuration. - Apply the settings, then start or reinitialize the output if necessary. Review the OBS log and verify the stream on your own configuration; a field accepting text does not establish that the encoder applied the option.
For OBS 31.0 and later, the OBS Project’s Advanced NVENC Options guide specifies space-separated option=value pairs for its NVENC custom-options field. Do not assume that syntax applies to every encoder or output mode.
Identify the encoder before choosing an option
OBS supports different encoder paths, including NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync Video, Apple VideoToolbox, and the x264 software encoder. Availability depends on the operating system, hardware, and—in some cases—GPU generation. Apple VideoToolbox streaming support also differs between Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. Check the OBS Project’s current hardware-encoding compatibility notes rather than assuming a particular encoder will appear on every computer.
Compare a proposed setting against the encoder actually selected, the codec and service you intend to use, the service’s current ingest requirements, rate-control behavior, keyframe or GOP handling, system load, and the quality you need at your available bitrate. OBS’s advanced recording settings guide presents different baselines for NVENC, x264, AMD, and Quick Sync. Those are recording examples, not automatic live-streaming prescriptions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
NVENC options and keyframe intervals
The OBS Project’s NVENC documentation distinguishes between keyint and gopLength. It defines keyint in frames and explicitly labels it “Not a standard NVENC option.” The page advises using keyint except for the special infinite-GOP case, for which it discusses gopLength. It also lists rate-control properties such as averageBitRate and maxBitRate; whether those are appropriate depends on the rate-control mode. Consult the current NVENC option list for exact names and applicability before adding them.
A frame-based keyframe interval is not the same thing as a time value. The conversion depends on frame rate: for example, a two-second interval corresponds to twice the frame rate in frames. Do not enter a value until you have confirmed the selected encoder’s expected units and the streaming service’s requirements.

Use a custom option safely
- Record your setup. Note the OBS version, operating system, selected encoder, codec, and destination service. This makes it easier to identify which documentation applies.
- Use built-in controls first. Set common values such as bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval through OBS’s visible controls when available. Add a custom property only when it is not exposed there or the encoder’s documentation specifically calls for it.
- Check the exact property. Confirm spelling, accepted value format, units, separator, and whether the option works with your selected rate-control mode and codec. Use documentation for that encoder, not a parameter list for a different one.
- Change one thing at a time. Record the original value, make one change, and reinitialize the output if needed. This helps distinguish a rejected option from a separate network, service, or performance problem.
- Validate the result. Check the OBS log for encoder errors and confirm the stream behaves as intended. If the output fails or the option is rejected, remove the custom entry and return to the last known working configuration.
OBS documentation explains encoder-specific controls, but it does not establish a single cross-encoder validation recipe. The OBS log and an actual stream on your machine are the practical checks; do not treat a saved setting as proof that it took effect.
Streaming values: vendor examples, not universal defaults
NVIDIA’s NVENC OBS guide recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, the P6 preset, High Quality tuning, and two-pass quarter-resolution multipass for the NVENC streaming workflow it describes. Those are NVIDIA’s recommendations for that workflow, not settings guaranteed to fit every encoder, service, or system. NVIDIA also notes that a service may limit keyframe interval and that GPU utilization can be a reason to turn off look-ahead.

The same guide gives a Twitch maximum bitrate of 6000 Kbps. Treat that as a platform limit stated in NVIDIA’s undated guide, checked on October 3, 2026—not as a permanent or universal bitrate target. Check Twitch’s current requirements before configuring a stream. NVIDIA’s guide also discusses H.264, HEVC, AV1, and HDR in relation to its workflow; enable HDR only when the service, capture pipeline, display, and encoder all support it. Its codec guidance differs by destination, including Twitch and YouTube, and should not be generalized to other platforms.
Common problems and what to check
- The custom-options field is missing: Confirm that Output Mode is Advanced, that you are on the Streaming tab, and that the selected encoder exposes such a field. The available controls depend on the encoder and OBS build.
- OBS rejects an option or the stream will not start: Remove the last custom entry, check its spelling and value against documentation for the selected encoder, then restart the output. Do not copy NVENC syntax or options into another encoder without confirmation.
- The stream starts but the requested behavior does not change: Check the OBS log and confirm that the selected encoder is the one you intended. The property may not apply in the current codec or rate-control mode, or its units may differ from what you assumed.
- Encoding performance worsens: Return to the prior working settings and review system load. NVIDIA specifically identifies GPU utilization as a possible reason to turn off look-ahead in its NVENC workflow; this is not a general recommendation for other encoders.
- The service reports a keyframe or bitrate problem: Check the destination’s current ingest requirements and OBS’s keyframe interval and rate-control settings. A vendor example or an old platform limit may not match current service requirements.
Or let it run in the cloud
