Set a price or movement alert in the app or exchange you already use, then decide in advance what—if anything—you will do when it arrives. An alert is only a notification, not a trade or a risk plan. Because menu names, supported assets, limits, and delivery vary by service, check the current settings in your own app before relying on one.
What are crypto price alerts?
A price alert notifies you when an asset or trading pair meets a condition you choose. Depending on the platform, that condition may be a target price, a move above or below a level, a percentage change, or a high or low over a selected timeframe.
Coinbase says its price alerts are informational and do not place an order or constitute investment advice. An alert can prompt you to review a position, but it does not decide whether to buy or sell, and receiving one does not guarantee you can act at the displayed price. Coinbase Help: Price alerts.

- Find the asset or pair. Confirm both the cryptocurrency and the quote currency—for example, whether a level is expressed in dollars or another currency.
- Add it to a watchlist if needed. Some services only offer alerts for watched assets. Coinbase’s mobile instructions require the asset to be on a watchlist.
- Open the alert control. Look for a bell icon, an “Alerts” option, or a similar control on the asset page.
- Choose the condition and threshold. Set a target price or available above/below, percentage-move, or timeframe high/low condition. Check whether the condition triggers when price crosses a level or whenever it is currently at or beyond that level.
- Save the alert and check its schedule. Review any frequency, cooldown, maximum-count, and expiry settings. If the service lets you choose how often it can notify you, set that deliberately.
- Enable and test delivery settings. Turn on the desired push, in-app, or email channel where offered, and check your phone or desktop notification permissions. Confirm the alert appears in the app’s active-alert list.
Examples from major platforms
Coinbase’s mobile help page describes selecting a watched asset and setting an alert for a price above or below a target. Robinhood documents crypto alerts for key price levels, percentage movements, and timeframe highs or lows; eligible assets may include crypto you hold, watch, or have held previously. Binance’s support page describes target-price, rise-above, drop-to, percentage-change, and 24-hour-change triggers. Its 2022 article listed limits of 10 alerts per trading pair, 50 total, and 90-day validity. Those are dated specifications, not reliable current limits; check the live interface for the rules that apply to your account. Binance: How to set price alerts.
What to check before relying on an alert
- Asset and quote currency: Make sure the alert is attached to the coin or pair you intend to monitor and that its price is quoted in the currency you expect.
- Trigger logic: Determine whether it fires on a crossing, a current price condition, a percentage move, or a timeframe high or low.
- Frequency and expiry: Look for cooldowns, repeat behavior, alert-count limits, and expiration dates. Product rules can change.
- Delivery channel: Confirm which channels are enabled and that notification permissions are allowed on your device. Robinhood warns that push delivery can be affected by service availability and phone settings; Coinbase also requires notification preferences to be enabled. Alerts should not be treated as guaranteed or real-time execution signals. Sources: Robinhood and Coinbase.
- What the alert can do: Establish whether it only informs you or can trigger an action. Coinbase says its cited price alerts do not place orders.
Turn alerts into a portfolio risk plan
Choose your rules before a sharp move, not while reacting to a notification. A written plan can set an overall portfolio risk budget, a maximum share for crypto, and a separate concentration limit for any one holding. It can also specify what happens when a threshold is crossed—for example, review the position or rebalance according to a rule you selected beforehand.

There is no single crypto allocation that suits every investor. Your time horizon, financial circumstances, tolerance for losses, and the rest of your portfolio matter. Schwab describes both a classic allocation approach, based on expected performance, and a risk-budgeting approach, which starts with the amount of risk an investor is willing to take. Its discussion emphasizes personal choice and crypto’s additional risk and volatility: Schwab: How much crypto should be in your portfolio?.
For perspective, a November 2025 Morgan Stanley article cited an estimated 55% annualized crypto volatility and described 2%–4% exposure for moderate-to-aggressive growth-oriented portfolios. It also reported that a 6% crypto position nearly doubled overall volatility in the firm’s portfolio simulations. These are dated institutional analysis and simulation figures, not forecasts or personal allocation recommendations; results depend on the assumptions and portfolio modeled. Choose a rebalancing rule
Decide what counts as a review or rebalancing threshold, and how you will respond if crypto grows beyond its planned share or falls below it. The rule might be tied to a chosen allocation band or a scheduled review; what matters is that the trigger and response are defined in advance. A price alert can flag a level for review, but it cannot determine whether a trade is appropriate for you.

Crypto exposure can be highly speculative and volatile. The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy and the CFTC’s Office of Customer Education and Outreach warn that “Bitcoin, including gaining exposure through the Bitcoin futures market, is a highly speculative investment.” Their joint alert focuses on Bitcoin and futures-market exposure; it is not a complete guide to every spot holding. Alerts, portfolio trackers, and custody address different needs
Alerts monitor conditions; a portfolio tracker can help show allocation and concentration; custody choices concern how you control directly held assets. When comparing portfolio tools, check supported assets, exchange or wallet connections, update timing, allocation views, and privacy and security terms. A hardware wallet may be relevant to custody of crypto you hold directly, but it does not reduce market volatility, set an allocation, ensure alert delivery, or guarantee recovery of funds.
