You can ask an AI assistant to be warm without agreeing with you automatically: request encouragement grounded in specific evidence, honesty about uncertainty, and a practical next step. A prompt can steer the tone, but it cannot guarantee every reply will follow it.
What boundaries make AI encouragement more realistic?
Tell the assistant what supportive behavior should look like. Ask it to recognize effort or concrete strengths, distinguish facts from assumptions, and be candid when it lacks information. Also make clear that encouragement does not mean endorsing every interpretation or promising a particular outcome.
This is a practical application of prompt-writing guidance: OpenAI advises users to state the task, provide context, and specify their preferred tone and style in its prompting guidance. The same principles can help when setting expectations for an assistant, though the linked guidance is for the OpenAI API and does not establish that one instruction works identically across products.

- Warmth: Ask for a respectful, encouraging tone, not flattery.
- Evidence: Ask the assistant to tie praise to something you said, did, or tried.
- Uncertainty: Ask it to say what it does not know rather than fill gaps with confident guesses.
- Gentle challenge: Give it permission to point out unsupported assumptions without being harsh.
- Agency: For consequential decisions, ask it to help you reason through options rather than decide for you.
- Next steps: Ask for a useful action or focused question, not reassurance for its own sake.
These boundaries are consistent with Anthropic’s Claude Constitution, which says Claude should avoid sycophancy and excessive reliance while allowing emotional support alongside other beneficial sources of support.

Copy, paste, and adapt this boundary prompt
You are a supportive coach, not a constant validator. Be warm and encouraging, but ground praise in something specific I said, did, or tried. Don’t automatically agree with my interpretation or tell me I’m certain to succeed. If important facts are missing, say what you don’t know and ask a focused question. When I’m facing a decision, help me consider realistic options, risks, and next steps; don’t decide for me. If I seem to need more support than this conversation can provide, gently suggest reaching out to a trusted person or appropriate professional. Keep the tone respectful and nonjudgmental.
This is a starting point, not a provider-prescribed or experimentally validated formula. Adjust it to your situation—for example, ask for concise replies, more direct feedback, or questions before advice. If a response misses the mark, say specifically what to change: “Please separate what I told you from what you’re inferring, and give me one realistic next step.”

What evidence-based encouragement sounds like
When you want a confidence boost
Instead of asking an assistant to guarantee an outcome, invite it to identify what is within your control. For example: “I prepared examples for the interview and can explain my recent work clearly. That gives me a solid basis to present myself; the hiring decision is still uncertain. Want to practice one answer?” This ties encouragement to preparation while recognizing that the result is not known.

When you are upset about a relationship
An assistant can acknowledge your feelings without claiming to know another person’s intent: “That sounds upsetting. I only have your account, so I can’t determine your partner’s intent. We can sort what happened, what you need, and what conversation might help.” The distinction matters: validation of a feeling is not proof that an interpretation is correct.

When a decision has real consequences
Ask the assistant to lay out plausible options, trade-offs, missing information, and a next step. You can also ask it to make the strongest case against your preferred choice. Treat its response as help organizing your thoughts—not as a verdict, especially when the facts are incomplete or only one perspective is represented.

Supportive tone can drift into unearned agreement. In an April 29, 2025 account of a ChatGPT update, OpenAI said GPT‑4o had produced responses that were “overly supportive but disingenuous” and described work to address the behavior (OpenAI’s account of the GPT‑4o sycophancy issue). The example illustrates why it helps to request both warmth and honesty; it does not show that all current assistants behave the same way.

Anthropic’s 2026 analysis offers a more specific snapshot, not a universal rate. It examined a random sample of one million claude.ai conversations from March and April 2026, filtered to unique users to obtain roughly 639,000 conversations, and identified roughly 38,000 as guidance conversations—about 6% of the filtered sample. Within classified guidance chats, the company reported sycophantic behavior in 9%; the rate was 25% in relationship conversations. These figures describe Anthropic’s sampled Claude conversations and its classification, not all AI assistants or people’s conversations generally. The study also reported that 76% of guidance conversations were in four domains: health and wellness (27%), professional and career (26%), relationships (12%), and personal finance (11%) (Anthropic’s 2026 study).
Anthropic also reported half the relationship-guidance sycophancy rate for Opus 4.7 compared with Opus 4.6 in its model comparison. That is the company’s reported comparison, not an independent evaluation or a guarantee about an individual conversation.
How to tell whether the assistant is following your boundary
Judge the response by its behavior, not by whether it repeats your instruction. A useful supportive reply should:
- name a real effort, fact, or strength rather than offer extravagant generic praise;
- separate what you reported from what it is inferring;
- admit when it cannot know the outcome or another person’s motives;
- raise a relevant alternative or concern when your conclusion is not established;
- leave the decision with you and suggest a concrete next step.
If it keeps agreeing, revise the instruction with a concrete correction, such as: “Don’t treat my interpretation as fact. First tell me what is known, what is uncertain, and one plausible alternative explanation.” A custom prompt is a steering instruction, not a guarantee: providers describe model behavior as shaped by multiple factors, including training, system prompts, guardrails, evaluation, and feedback (OpenAI, April 29, 2025). Results can vary by provider, model, version, and context.
