For a clear Indian FM radio livestream, feed YouTube a clean stereo program signal, set gain so no stage clips, measure both loudness and true peaks, and test representative content through the actual YouTube player. YouTube’s live-encoder guidance recommends AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz stereo, and 128 kbps stereo audio; it does not specify a required incoming LUFS target. FM transmission processing, the encoder’s input level, and YouTube’s playback-volume features are separate parts of the chain.

Keep the three level stages separate

An FM station’s processing and modulation are designed for its broadcast transmission path. The audio level entering a streaming encoder is a different measurement point, and YouTube may also adjust playback on some videos. A healthy meter at one point does not prove that the next point is clean or correctly set.

  • FM processing and modulation: the station’s transmission chain may use processing intended for FM. Its modulation indication is not a target for the encoder input.
  • Streaming input: check the audio at the source output, capture or interface input, and encoder. Keep headroom and prevent digital clipping at every stage.
  • Viewer playback: YouTube’s Stable volume feature can balance quieter and louder portions on supported videos, but it is not available on every video and is off for YouTube Music and official music videos. It cannot repair a clipped or poorly routed feed. YouTube: Stable volume

Choose the right station feed

First identify exactly where the stream will take its audio. A clean program output or a separately conditioned digital-distribution output is generally preferable to an output that has already passed through aggressive FM processing. EBU radio guidance recommends conditioning digital distribution separately from FM processing; the exact routing available depends on the station’s equipment. EBU R 128 s3

Feed option What to check Potential concern
Clean program output Connector type, analog or digital format, reference level, loudness, and true peaks. It may need suitable gain staging or separate online conditioning before the encoder.
Separately conditioned digital-distribution output Confirm its processing, output format, and level, then monitor it independently. Do not assume a label such as “digital” guarantees suitable level or clean peaks.
Post-FM processor output or off-air receiver capture Listen for pumping, harshness, clipped transients, noise, stereo problems, and changes between sources. FM-specific processing may already be present; additional aggressive compression or limiting can make the sound worse.

Match the connection and reference level

Confirm whether the station provides balanced analog audio or AES/EBU digital audio, and whether the receiving interface expects line level, microphone level, or a digital connection. A matching connector shape alone does not mean the signal types or levels match. Check both devices’ specifications and set the interface’s input reference appropriately.

Flowing or frozen RGB color rotation in a decent pace presents a greatly strong impression as a "light show" to your audience. Even a streaming equipment accessory will not be dull looking when video production.

For context, Prasar Bharati’s January 2023 Audio Processor/11/January/2023-D specification describes an analog stereo output adjustable from −4 dBu to +20 dBu peak at 100% peak modulation, as well as a stereo AES/EBU input and a variable digital input reference level. Those are equipment interface parameters, not recommended YouTube levels or a stream loudness target. Prasar Bharati Audio Processor specification

Set gain and processing before encoding

  1. Meter the source output. Establish that the chosen program or distribution output is clean and consistent. Avoid using an FM modulation meter as a substitute for measuring the audio signal feeding the encoder.
  2. Check every input stage. Watch the level at the capture or interface input and the encoder meter. If a stage overloads, lower gain at that stage rather than compensating later.
  3. Measure loudness and true peaks. A peak meter alone does not describe perceived loudness. Use a loudness meter to observe integrated and short-term behavior and a true-peak meter to find inter-sample peaks; preserve headroom.
  4. Listen before adding processing. If the source is already heavily processed for FM, check for pumping, harshness, and clipped transients before applying any more compression or limiting. Where possible, condition a clean digital-distribution path independently.
  5. Make changes cautiously. If a clean feed sounds quieter than desired, raise its output carefully while watching true peaks and listening for distortion. Re-test after each meaningful adjustment.

What loudness target should you use?

YouTube’s published live-encoder settings give audio codecs and encoding recommendations, but the cited guidance does not set a required incoming integrated LUFS figure. Do not treat −14 LUFS as a YouTube livestream requirement, or present −23 LUFS as one.

EBU R 128 version 5.0, published in November 2023, recommends average programme loudness of −23 LUFS and the use of Loudness Range and Maximum True Peak Level descriptors. That is European broadcast guidance, not a YouTube rule or an Indian legal requirement. EBU R 128 s3 (2023) says radio distribution that differs from −23.0 LUFS should generally be selected within −20.0 to −16.0 LUFS and recommends separate conditioning for digital distribution. These figures are technical references for broadcasters choosing to follow that guidance; they do not establish a mandatory target for an Indian station’s YouTube stream. EBU R 128 EBU R 128 s3

For a practical setup, use loudness and true-peak measurements, avoid clipping, and choose a consistent online level that works across representative programming in listening tests. The available sources do not establish a current Indian rule specifically setting loudness for an FM simulcast to YouTube.

Set YouTube’s stereo audio encoding

For a stereo live stream, YouTube’s live-encoder guidance recommends AAC or MP3 audio, a 44.1 kHz sample rate, and 128 kbps stereo audio. These are encoding settings, not a loudness target. Check the current encoder and Live Control Room options when configuring the stream. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Test the whole chain before going live

  1. Build a representative test. Include speech, music, station IDs, jingles, source changes, and transitions so the test exercises the levels and processing listeners will actually hear.
  2. Check the encoder and platform preview. Confirm the stream is receiving audio and video and inspect Live Control Room messages and stream health.
  3. Listen on another device. Monitor the actual YouTube player, not only the studio or encoder output. Listen for clipping, pumping, abrupt level shifts, noise, and stereo issues.
  4. Keep monitoring during the live stream. Watch encoder input loudness and true peaks as well as YouTube stream health. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, checking the preview, and continuously monitoring quality. Troubleshoot distortion, pumping, or uneven sound

Symptom Likely place to investigate What to do
Distortion or clipping Source output, interface input, or encoder input may be overloading. Check meters at each point and lower gain where overload occurs. Do not rely on a later volume reduction to fix clipping already introduced upstream.
Pumping or harshness Existing FM processing combined with additional compression or limiting. Compare against the cleanest available feed. Reduce redundant processing or use an independently conditioned digital output if the station provides one.
Volume changes between speech, music, IDs, or sources Source switching, mismatched source levels, or processor behavior. Identify which transition causes the change and inspect levels and processing at that point instead of boosting the entire stream.
Clean but consistently too quiet Streaming output gain may be conservative. Raise output cautiously while monitoring loudness and true peaks, then repeat the end-to-end test.
Unexpectedly different sound in the YouTube player Playback behavior, including Stable volume on supported videos, may differ from the encoder output. Listen to the actual player and check the source chain independently; viewer-side balancing does not substitute for clean gain staging.
