To choose the image Squarespace offers when a page is shared, set that page’s Alternate Social Sharing Image on a computer. For a site-wide default, set the Social Sharing Logo. If a page has no alternate image, Squarespace says the site-wide social sharing logo is the fallback.
Choose a site-wide default or a page-specific image
Squarespace uses “social sharing image” in its interface and help documentation for the image commonly called an Open Graph image. The Social Sharing Logo is the default representing the site. An Alternate Social Sharing Image overrides that default for an individual page or supported collection item.
- Use the site-wide image when you want a simple, consistent default across shared pages.
- Use page-specific images when individual pages should have previews that better match their content. These overrides take more upkeep as pages change.
Set the site-wide Social Sharing Logo
- Open Squarespace’s Social Sharing panel.
- Click + to upload an image or choose one from the site library. You can also drag an image into the uploader.
- Click Save.
Squarespace describes this image as representing the whole site. It serves as the fallback when a page does not have its own alternate social sharing image.
Set an Open Graph image for one page
Use a computer for this edit: Squarespace’s Page settings reference says alternate social image settings are not available in the app.

- Hover over the page title and click its gear icon to open page settings.
- Select Social.
- Upload or select the image in the image uploader.
- Click Save.
Squarespace calls this override the Alternate Social Sharing Image. Its Page settings reference labels the relevant area “Social Image”; in the page settings, look for the Social tab.
Supported pages and items
Squarespace documents alternate social images for pages and certain collection items, including blog posts, products, events, and, in version 7.1, portfolio sub-pages. The setting is not available for gallery images or album tracks.

How Squarespace and social networks choose the preview
Saving an image tells social networks what image to consider; it does not guarantee that every network will show the same preview. Squarespace’s Help Center explains: “However, the social network ultimately controls what appears in the post, not Squarespace.” Its article “How content displays in social posts” was last updated April 4, 2025.
For layout pages, collection pages, and indexes, Squarespace documents this LinkedIn image order: the Alternate Social Sharing Image, then the Social Sharing Logo, then the site logo for homepages, and finally LinkedIn’s best guess. For collection items, the item’s featured image may also be considered; products may use their first image. Gallery pages are an exception: the Social Sharing Logo is used.

Prepare an image and check its crop
- For Facebook: Squarespace’s 2026 guidance says shared images must be at least 200 × 200 pixels. This is a stated minimum, not a universal ideal size or a guarantee of how the image will be cropped.
- For file weight: Squarespace’s SEO checklist recommends keeping images under 500 KB and overall page size under 5 MB to keep pages nimble. These are performance recommendations, not social-preview specifications.
- For aspect ratio: The cited Squarespace guidance does not establish one stable, universal ratio. Check the target network’s current image guidance and preview the crop there rather than relying on a single ratio for every platform.
Troubleshoot a missing or outdated preview
The wrong image appears
Check whether the page has an Alternate Social Sharing Image in Pages > page gear icon > Social. If it does not, Squarespace’s documented fallback is the site-wide Social Sharing Logo. Also account for platform-specific selection behavior: a network may choose an item image or its own best guess instead.
The old image still appears after saving
Social networks control their rendered previews and may cache them. Squarespace says Facebook may need to clear its cache and points users to the Facebook Debugger. Re-fetching a page can help with a stale Facebook preview, but it cannot guarantee identical or immediate results across networks.

The setting is missing in the app
Use a computer and open the page’s settings. Squarespace’s Page settings reference identifies alternate social image settings as unavailable in the app.
