To set an animated Discord avatar, upload a GIF from your profile settings and save it. Discord currently makes animated GIF avatars a Nitro feature. You can do this on desktop, in a browser, or in the mobile app; a separate GIF avatar can also be set for an individual server with Per-Server Profiles.
Set an animated Discord avatar on desktop or in a browser
- Open User Settings by selecting the gear icon.
- Select Profiles.
- Select Change Avatar, or click your current avatar.
- Upload a GIF or choose one from your files. Discord lists PNG and GIF as supported avatar file types; choosing a GIF for an animated avatar is available to Nitro subscribers.
- Select Apply, then Save Changes.

Set a GIF avatar in the Discord mobile app
- Tap your avatar in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap Edit Profile.
- Tap your profile image to change the avatar.
- Choose a GIF and confirm the selection.
- Save your profile changes.
Discord’s mobile getting-started guide describes editing and saving the profile image. Animated GIF avatars are a Nitro feature, as stated in the Custom Profiles guide.

Nitro members can set a server-specific avatar through Per-Server Profiles, including a GIF. In the relevant server, open the server profile editor from your avatar, choose the server-specific profile, set the avatar, and save. On mobile, open the profile editor for that server and select its server-specific profile.

This setting changes your appearance in that server only; it does not replace your main profile avatar in servers where you have not set a custom server avatar. See Discord’s Per-Server Profiles guide, updated August 6, 2025.
Animated avatar, profile effect, or banner?
A GIF avatar is the image used as your profile picture. A profile effect is a separate visual effect shown when someone views your profile, and a profile banner is another distinct customization. The banner requirements listed in Discord’s Custom Profiles guide—including its file-size and dimension specifications—apply to banners, not avatar GIFs. The guide does not establish a maximum avatar GIF size or dimensions, so do not rely on banner limits for an avatar.

Discord’s current Custom Profiles guidance says Nitro subscribers can upload animated GIFs as their profile avatar. Discord also lists animated avatars among Nitro profile customization features in its Nitro and Nitro Basic overview. If you do not have Nitro, the supported static avatar format is PNG.
