To set mid-roll ads on a 24/7 YouTube livestream, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, turn on monetization, then choose automatic, scheduled, or manual breaks under Edit > Monetization. Automatic placement is YouTube’s recommended option when you cannot predict every lull; scheduled breaks use a configured interval, and manual breaks let you choose when to offer an ad slot. None guarantees that an ad will show to every viewer—or that no one will leave.
Set up mid-roll ads in Live Control Room
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live.
- Start a stream from the Stream tab, or schedule one from Manage.
- Open Edit > Monetization and turn monetization on.
- Choose Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual for mid-roll ads.
- If you choose scheduled breaks, select an interval of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. If you choose manual, insert breaks from Live Control Room while the stream is running.
Live Watch Page ad revenue requires accepting YouTube’s Watch Page Monetization Module. Eligibility can vary by channel, so check the monetization status and options shown in your own Studio account. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance and Watch Page Monetization Module information.
Choose the mode that fits your stream
| Mode | Timing control | Interruption management | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic | YouTube selects placements; choose low, medium, or high frequency. | YouTube says it aims for natural breakpoints. Its systems include limits on disruption to channel members, pauses for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats, or Stickers, and snoozes for all viewers during high engagement. | YouTube recommends this mode. Its guidance says scheduled or manual settings may have lower earnings potential. Automated safeguards do not guarantee that no viewer is interrupted. |
| Scheduled | Choose a configured interval: 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. | You set a repeatable cadence rather than choosing each moment. Use it when a predictable interval matters more than responding to the content in real time. | The selected interval is a setting, not a promise that an ad will serve at each interval or to every viewer. |
| Manual | You insert each ad break from Live Control Room while streaming. | Choose a natural lull, pause, or transition. YouTube says disruptive placements, such as mid-sentence or mid-action, are less likely to serve. | You control when to offer a slot, not whether YouTube fills it. Manual control requires someone to monitor the stream. |
YouTube reported that creators who enabled live automatic mid-roll ads saw, on average, over 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not. The platform-reported comparison covered channels across 207 countries and was published in January 2024; it is an average, not a forecast or guarantee for an individual channel. Details are in YouTube Help.

Reduce interruptions without promising an ad-free experience
Use automatic mode when the stream has no predictable breaks
For continuous music, ambient video, or other content without an operator choosing moments, automatic placement avoids relying on someone to catch every lull. YouTube says its system aims to place ads at natural breakpoints and can snooze ads during high engagement. These are system behaviors, not a guarantee about any viewer’s experience.

Schedule only when a configured cadence is useful
Pick one of the available intervals based on the rhythm and length of your content. Treat it as a configured opportunity for an ad slot, not as a viewer-facing countdown. YouTube’s ad systems decide whether a slot gets an ad.
Insert manual breaks at transitions
For a hosted stream, use a genuine pause, a segment change, or another moment when viewers can rejoin without missing speech or action. A disruptive slot may be less likely to serve, and the manual control cannot force delivery.

Use Delay ads for important moments in automatic mode
In Live Control Room, Delay ads delays mid-rolls for 10 minutes. YouTube displays a five-second countdown before ads resume. YouTube notes that manually placed mid-rolls still display when this delay is on, so do not treat the delay as a block on manual insertions.
As YouTube Help puts it: “Our ad systems decide which ad slots may get an ad based on a number of factors to best balance viewer experience, creator earnings, and advertiser values.” See YouTube’s explanation of live ad controls and its mid-roll ad guidance.

What viewers see—and what settings cannot guarantee
Some viewers may receive an ad and rejoin after it ends or they skip it; others may receive no ad and continue watching. A scheduled interval does not mean every viewer sees an ad at that interval. Likewise, automatic placement and manual timing cannot guarantee a particular fill rate, revenue, or audience response. If retaining viewers is the priority, avoid placing manual breaks in the middle of a sentence or action and use Delay ads around moments you do not want interrupted.
Use Take a Break for an intentional away screen
Take a Break is separate from the mid-roll schedule. It lets you show a 1-, 3-, or 5-minute away screen. Eligible viewers may see ads; if an ad does not run, they see an away slate. The break does not end automatically when the countdown reaches zero: end it yourself in Live Control Room. You can select a custom slate from your video library if the video is public or unlisted and allows embedding. YouTube’s instructions also describe adding the overlay as a browser source in an encoder.

Optional: insert manual ads with a Stream Deck

Check current device and plugin compatibility before choosing a specific Stream Deck model.

What is—and is not—specific to 24/7 streams
YouTube’s published guidance describes general live-stream ad controls; it does not establish a separate ad schedule, maximum stream duration, or ad-delivery guarantee for a 24/7 broadcast. Check the options currently displayed in your Live Control Room rather than assuming a special continuous-stream rule. A stream that runs continuously still needs content and monetization practices that comply with YouTube’s policies. For video monetization, review YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
