For comfort and efficiency, set your thermostat to the highest temperature that still feels comfortable while people are home and awake. Raise it when the home is empty or everyone is asleep, and use a fan to move air when people are in the room. If airflow from the AC seems weak, start by checking the filter; persistent problems may need professional diagnosis.
Choose a comfortable thermostat setting, not a universal number
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recommends setting the thermostat as high as is comfortable when occupants are home and awake, then raising the setting during sleep or when the home is unoccupied. There is no single temperature that suits every household: comfort needs, humidity, pets, health considerations, insulation, equipment, and occupancy can all affect the choice. See the DOE’s home-cooling guidance and its 2022 Energy Saver guide.
A programmable thermostat can automate scheduled increases when people are asleep or away, so you do not have to remember to adjust it. DOE’s cooling infographic says a programmable thermostat could help save up to 10 percent on annual heating and cooling costs. That is a potential outcome, not a guaranteed household saving.
Use fan speed for how the moving air feels
Moving air helps people feel cooler by increasing heat loss from the skin. Choose a speed that feels comfortable to the people in the room; DOE guidance does not establish one best speed for every fan, room, or HVAC system. A fan does not lower the room’s temperature, so turn it off when nobody is there. As the DOE puts it, “fans cool people, not rooms.”

When a ceiling fan may let you raise the setpoint
DOE says a ceiling fan can allow you to raise the thermostat setting about 4°F without reducing comfort. Treat that as general guidance, not a promise that every occupant will feel equally comfortable. The recommendation appears in the DOE’s Summer Edition energy-saving article and its cooling infographic.
Use the fan’s instructions for setup and direction, and adjust it based on how the air movement feels. The cited DOE guidance does not establish a universal fan direction for this AC-setting question.

Check the filter if AC airflow seems weak
A dirty or clogged filter is one possible reason for restricted airflow. DOE says a clogged filter can reduce efficiency and the system’s ability to cool effectively. Check the equipment manual for the filter type, dimensions, and whether it should be cleaned or replaced; use a compatible replacement HVAC air filter. DOE’s cooling infographic states that routine filter replacement or cleaning can lower air-conditioner energy consumption by 5–15 percent. This is a published potential range, not a guaranteed result for an individual system.
Know when the issue may be beyond the filter
If cleaning or replacing the filter does not resolve limited airflow, ductwork problems—including leaks, clogs, or constrictions—may be involved. DOE recommends professional help for duct cleaning and air sealing. Leave refrigerant and electrical troubleshooting to trained professionals rather than attempting repairs yourself.
