To change the image people see when they share a WordPress URL, set the page’s Featured image and make sure your site outputs an Open Graph og:image tag. A Featured Image controls your theme’s on-site design, but it does not automatically guarantee a social preview. An SEO plugin such as Yoast SEO can connect the image to Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Pinterest, Google and X, provide a site-wide fallback, and let you override the image for one page.

Set the page image in the WordPress editor

Use this workflow for a post or page that needs a specific preview image:

  1. In WordPress, open Posts or Pages and edit the item you will share.
  2. Click the Settings (gear) icon to open the Page or Post Settings sidebar.
  3. Expand Featured image and click Set featured image.
  4. Upload an image or choose one from the Media Library, then click Set featured image.
  5. Click Update or Publish.

WordPress calls Featured Images “also sometimes called Post Thumbnails.” The theme decides where that image appears: archives, home-page listings, templates, or above the article. In a block theme, you can also open Appearance → Editor, edit the relevant post template, and insert the Post Featured Image block. That makes the same selected image part of the page design, but social networks still need metadata in the page’s <head>.

Make the Featured Image a social preview

Sharing services do not read the editor sidebar. They request your page and inspect metadata such as og:image, og:title and og:description. If no usable Open Graph image exists, a network may choose a logo, an image from the article, or nothing.

#1 Best Overall
wordpress hosting
  • easy to use
  • Free app
  • Compatible with all devices
  • It gives the best comparison between ten different hosts

With Yoast SEO, open SEO → Settings → Social sharing and ensure Open Graph data is enabled. Then update the page and inspect its social controls. Yoast supports a custom image for an individual page, so you can use artwork designed for sharing instead of the on-page Featured Image.

For X, enable X card data under SEO → Settings → Site features → Social sharing. Yoast’s default X card type is summary_large_image. X may use a custom X image, the Facebook/Open Graph image, the Featured Image, a prominent content image, a template default, or the site-wide default.

Choose between a Featured Image and a custom social image

Approach Best use Fallback behavior Important limitation
WordPress Featured Image One image for the theme and ordinary post metadata Can be used when the SEO plugin has no more specific image Setting it alone does not guarantee an og:image tag
Per-page social image in Yoast Exact art direction for one URL Overrides broader image choices Must be configured in the page’s social controls
Template social default A consistent image for a post or page template Used when a page has no custom image Can be superseded by a page-specific image
Site-wide default image Homepage, archive, or pages without their own image Last-resort fallback for missing images It is not a substitute for a page-specific image when the preview matters

Yoast documents this og:image priority: a custom per-page Facebook image, the post’s Featured Image, a prominent image in the content, a WooCommerce product-gallery image where applicable, a template social default, and finally the site fallback/default image. Therefore, set a custom social image when the exact crop, logo placement, or headline matters.

Set a default image for the homepage and image-less pages

A homepage often has no single post Featured Image. Configure the default social image in your SEO plugin’s social-sharing settings. Use a branded landscape image that still makes sense when it appears beside the homepage title and description. The default is also useful for pages that have no selected image, but it should not hide missing page-specific artwork during a campaign.

For a page that must always show a particular graphic, edit that page’s social settings and upload its custom image. This prevents the plugin from falling through to a content image or the site-wide fallback.

Prepare an image that survives different previews

  • Use a clear landscape composition with generous safe margins around logos and text. Different services crop and resize cards differently.
  • Start with a sufficiently large source image. A tiny file may be enlarged and look soft; an unnecessarily huge file adds download weight.
  • Choose a web-supported file type and sensible compression. WordPress documentation notes that pixel dimensions, file type, compression and file size affect quality and layout.
  • Keep the most important words away from the edges. A crop that works on one network can remove an edge headline on another.
  • Preview the card in your SEO plugin when available, then verify the live URL on each network you care about. A preview tool is not proof that every platform will render an identical crop.

No universal social-preview pixel size is established by the WordPress documentation cited here. Treat network-specific recommendations as implementation targets, not a guarantee of identical rendering.

Inspect the metadata WordPress actually publishes

  1. Open the published URL in a browser.
  2. View the page source (not only the visual inspector).
  3. Search for og:image, og:title and, where relevant, twitter:image.
  4. Confirm that og:image points to the intended file and that the title and description match the page.

The image URL must be publicly reachable over HTTPS and return an image, not a login form, redirect loop, access-denied response or blocked resource. If the source contains two different values for the same property, fix the duplicate output before asking a network to scrape the page again.

Fix the most common wrong-image problems

The logo appears instead of the Featured Image

Open the page’s social controls and set a custom image. Then inspect the source for og:image. A Featured Image can be present in WordPress while the SEO layer chooses a site default or another image.

Two plugins output Open Graph tags

SEO and social plugins can both emit og:image, title and description tags. Disable Open Graph output in one plugin (or remove the redundant plugin) so only one source controls the metadata. Duplicate tags can cause a network to select the wrong value.

The new image does not appear after an update

Clear the WordPress page cache, server cache and CDN cache. Then use the target platform’s URL inspection or share-debugging tool, when available, to request a fresh scrape. Social platforms cache previews independently of WordPress, so refreshing your browser is not enough.

The image URL works for you but not for the crawler

Test the exact URL in a private browser window and with a direct request. Remove authentication requirements, hotlink restrictions and rules that block crawler user agents. Confirm HTTPS, a correct image content type, and a final response that is the image itself.

A page-specific image is ignored

Set the image in the plugin’s social tab rather than relying only on the on-page Featured Image. Check the resulting source after saving and clear caches before re-scraping.

The card is cropped badly

Rework the composition with safe margins and less edge-bound text. Compare the plugin preview with the destination network’s preview; each service can apply a different crop.

Understand what each option provides

Capability Native WordPress Yoast SEO Dedicated Open Graph plugin
Sets a Featured Image for theme templates Yes Uses the WordPress value Usually reads the WordPress value
Emits og:image Not guaranteed Yes when Open Graph data is enabled Depends on the plugin
Per-page image override Not built in Yes Varies
Site-wide and template fallbacks Theme-dependent Yes Varies
X card metadata Not built in Yes, when enabled Varies
Preview of the final card Theme-dependent Available in its social controls Varies

Use one authoritative source for Open Graph output. Yoast is a practical choice when you need per-page overrides, defaults, X cards and social previews in one place; a dedicated plugin may be appropriate if your existing SEO stack does not provide those controls.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a rendered image of the finished WordPress page rather than metadata for a social card, ScreenshotNeo can capture the URL through one request. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, removes more than 60 known consent platforms plus newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, and reports whether a response was a clean page, bot check, blank page, timeout, failed load or cache hit. Only clean shots are billed.

Here is a complete cURL request (replace the URL with your published WordPress page):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all capture options. The same endpoint also supports full-page screenshots, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets, custom viewport and retina scale, PDFs, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocked resources, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs, webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting and an OpenAPI specification.

Final verification checklist

  • The intended post or page has a Featured Image.
  • Open Graph data is enabled in exactly one SEO or social plugin.
  • A custom social image is set where precise artwork is required.
  • A homepage or image-less template has a sensible default image.
  • The source contains one correct og:image and, if needed, one twitter:image.
  • The image URL is public, HTTPS and returns the image without authentication.
  • WordPress, server and CDN caches are cleared after changes.
  • The destination network has been asked to re-scrape the URL if its cached card is stale.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does changing a Featured Image immediately change an old social post?

No. A social network may have cached the previous card. Update the page, clear your own caches and request a fresh scrape with that network’s inspection or debugger tool when available.

Should the homepage use a Featured Image?

A homepage often has no single post image, so configure a site-wide social default in your SEO plugin and override it only when the homepage needs campaign-specific artwork.

Can I use a different image for X and Facebook?

Yes. Yoast provides social controls for custom X and Facebook/Open Graph images. If no custom value is set, X can fall back through the same image hierarchy.
