Set Selenium’s page-load timeout before calling get(). In Python, driver.set_page_load_timeout(30) limits the navigation wait to 30 seconds. Then wait separately for any dynamic content your screenshot needs; navigation completing does not mean an application has finished rendering.
Set a timeout before navigating
Here is a complete Python example using Chrome. It sets a 30-second page-load timeout, opens a page, waits for a specific element, saves a screenshot, and always closes the browser:

What this timeout does—and does not—wait for
The page-load timeout bounds how long WebDriver waits for navigation to finish. Selenium’s default page-load strategy, normal, waits for the document’s ready state to become complete. That is a navigation milestone, not a guarantee that a single-page app has finished updating, images have loaded, or the exact content you want to capture is visible.

Selenium documents a default page-load timeout of 300,000 milliseconds (five minutes) for a new session. Set an explicit value when you need a predictable limit. The timeout is separate from implicit element waits, explicit waits, and asynchronous-script timeouts. See Selenium’s WebDriver options documentation.
Wait for the screenshot’s actual content
If your capture depends on a known element or state, use an explicit wait for that condition after navigation, as in the example. A fixed delay can be useful when there is no reliable condition to test, but it may wait longer than needed or still be too short when a page is slow. Prefer a condition tied to the content whenever possible.

Page-load strategies change when navigation returns

These strategies affect navigation timing; none confirms that application-specific screenshot content is ready. If you choose eager or none, make the later wait for the required content explicit.

Selenium’s JavaScript API describes the page-load timeout value in milliseconds. The exact setter syntax can depend on the binding version, so use the API documentation installed with your project rather than copying a setter from another language. Choose a timeout and handle failures deliberately
There is no universal best timeout: choose a bound that fits the sites and runtime conditions your script must support. A short limit can fail on a slow response; a long one makes a genuinely stalled navigation take longer to report. The documented five-minute default is an API default, not a measured recommendation for screenshot jobs.
When navigation exceeds the configured limit, WebDriver raises a timeout error. A partial document may remain, but whether it can be captured usefully depends on browser, driver, and where navigation stopped. Selenium does not promise that a screenshot after a navigation timeout will work. Treat partial capture as a recovery path to validate in your own setup—not as the normal success path.

Troubleshooting
get()raises a timeout: The page did not reach the configured navigation completion state within the limit. Increase the limit if slow navigation is expected, or inspect the page and network conditions before retrying.- The screenshot is missing content even though
get()returned: Navigation readiness is not application readiness. Add an explicit wait for the element or state the screenshot needs. - The script waits too long on a page that is usable: Consider whether the default
normalstrategy is stricter than your workflow needs. Aneagerornonestrategy can return earlier, but you must still wait for the content to capture. - A screenshot after timeout fails or is blank: Partial-page capture is not guaranteed. Log the navigation failure, decide whether to retry or fail the job, and verify any partial-capture recovery against the specific browser and driver versions you run.
- The timeout value seems off: Check the language binding’s units. Python uses seconds, Java uses
Duration, and Selenium’s JavaScript API describes milliseconds.
