Set your maximum bid by first choosing the most you can spend in total, then subtracting the auction’s estimated buyer’s premium, shipping, taxes, and other applicable charges. The result is your maximum hammer bid: the highest bid you are willing to make for the lot itself. Check the auction’s rules for automatic bidding, reserves, increments, bid changes, and cancellations before you submit it.
How much should you bid at an auction?
There is no universal “right” maximum. Set a personal walk-away amount based on what the item is worth to you and what you can afford after the sale’s costs. A maximum bid is a limit, not a formula for winning: another bidder may have entered a higher limit, or the lot may not meet its reserve.
Start with your total spending limit, not the displayed bid. If B is the most you can spend overall, estimate the buyer’s premium, shipping, taxes, and any other charges under that auction’s conditions. Your maximum hammer bid must leave room for those costs. When charges are calculated as a percentage of the hammer price, use the auction’s own calculator or terms to work out the affordable bid rather than subtracting a guessed flat amount. Christie’s points buyers to a lot cost calculator for estimates of buyer’s premium and shipping; Sotheby’s directs buyers to its buyer conditions for applicable premium rates. These are sale-specific tools and terms, not universal fee rates: Christie’s bidding guide and Sotheby’s buyer guide.
What does a maximum bid do?
On an auction platform that supports proxy or automatic bidding, entering a maximum generally authorizes the platform to bid for you in response to competing bids, up to the limit you set. The visible price may rise only by the increment required by that auction’s rules, so your maximum is not necessarily the amount you will pay. Auction.com puts it plainly: “Your Max Bid is not the price you’ll pay — it’s simply the limit you set.” That description applies to Auction.com’s bidding system; other platforms and auction houses can handle bids differently. See Auction.com’s Bidding at Auctions help page.

Read the interface carefully before submitting. “Maximum,” “proxy,” “automatic,” “advance,” and “absentee” bids do not necessarily mean identical things. Sotheby’s describes advance bidding that can be automatically executed in response to other bids, and absentee bids executed at the lowest price possible as determined at the auctioneer’s discretion, up to the amount entered. Auction House UK, Christie’s, Auction.com, and eBay each document automated bidding or maximum-bid features, but their rules should not be treated as interchangeable.
Check the rules that can affect your bid
Increments and reserves
A bid increment is the amount by which a bid must increase to be accepted; the schedule is set by the sale or platform. Christie’s says its predetermined increments appear in the Conditions of Sale. A reserve is the seller’s minimum acceptable price under the sale’s rules. Auction House UK describes different treatment when a maximum is below the reserve versus at or above it. Sotheby’s notes that seller bidding up to the reserve may apply in specified circumstances. Read the terms for the particular lot rather than assuming a maximum automatically reaches or beats the reserve.

Equal maximum bids and closing extensions
Some systems give priority to the earlier of two identical maximum bids. Auction House UK and Christie’s describe that rule for their systems; it is not a universal tie rule. Timed-auction closing extensions also vary: Auction House UK describes a 60-second extension window, while Christie’s describes a three-minute extension in the circumstance covered by its guide. Check the current lot or platform terms for the applicable tie and closing rules.
Changing or withdrawing a bid
Do not assume you can lower or cancel a bid after submitting it. Auction.com says a max bid can be decreased or removed only within an hour of submission and before bidding begins; after bidding starts, it cannot be lowered or removed, though it may be increased. Christie’s states, “Please note, you cannot cancel a bid once it’s been submitted.” Those policies describe the named services and do not establish a general rule for all auctions. Check the relevant terms before placing a bid.

Choose a bidding method that suits the sale
| Method | What to check |
|---|---|
| Maximum, proxy, or automatic bid | How the system places bids by increment, handles reserves and equal maxima, and whether the limit can be changed. |
| Absentee or advance bid | Who executes the bid, whether the auctioneer has discretion, whether the bid is confidential, and the submission deadline. Sotheby’s says its absentee bids are executed at the lowest price possible as determined at the auctioneer’s discretion, up to the stated amount. |
| Live or manual bidding | Whether you can monitor the lot and respond in real time while staying within your pre-set spending ceiling. |
Set and submit your ceiling
- Inspect the lot. Decide what it is worth to you before competitive bidding begins.
- Set your total budget. Include the likely buyer’s premium, shipping, taxes, and other applicable charges, then determine the maximum hammer bid that fits within it.
- Read the current sale terms. Check the premium, tax and shipping rules, bid increments, reserve handling, tie priority, closing extensions, and whether a bid can be reduced or canceled.
- Confirm what the bid field means. Make sure you understand whether you are entering a maximum, an absentee or advance bid, or a live bid, and how the platform will execute it.
- Stick to the limit. If bidding passes your ceiling, stop. Do not raise it solely because another bidder is competing.
