Windows 11 can change your time zone automatically when Set time zone automatically is on and Windows determines a location different from the one you expect. Location services may be unable to identify the PC reliably, or an administrator may control location access. To keep one zone, turn off the automatic time-zone setting and select your zone manually.
First, check which time setting is changing
Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time. Windows has separate switches for Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically. The first synchronizes the clock; the second selects the local time zone used to convert UTC into local time. If the zone is changing, focus on the time-zone switch rather than the clock-synchronization switch. Microsoft’s Windows time and date settings guide documents both controls.
Why automatic time-zone selection can be wrong
Windows uses location services to support automatic time-zone selection. Microsoft says location can be estimated using signals such as GPS, nearby wireless access points and routers, cell towers, an IP address, or a default location. If those signals are unavailable or point to an unexpected place, Windows may select a zone that does not match where you want the PC to remain configured. This is a troubleshooting possibility, not proof of the cause on any particular computer. Microsoft explains Windows location service and privacy.
Location access may be off or restricted
Check Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Location. Device-wide Location services and the account-level Let apps access your location control are distinct. The account-level control may not appear or be changeable when device location is off. Device-wide location access is controlled by an administrator, so a work or school PC may not let you change it yourself.

A desktop may lack useful location signals
Windows may have less information to determine location on a desktop, especially one without Wi-Fi. Microsoft recommends setting a default location when a more exact location is unavailable. On the Location settings page, go to Default location, choose Set default, enter or select the device’s location, and save. Microsoft’s location guidance describes this option.
Choose whether to use automatic or fixed time zones

The fixed option is the direct way to stop Windows from automatically switching zones. You can leave Set time automatically on if you still want the clock synchronized; it is a separate setting. Microsoft provides the steps for both configurations in its time, date, and time-zone guide.

Check daylight-saving and display settings separately
Daylight-saving adjustment is related to the time zone but is not the same as selecting one. Microsoft documents automatic daylight-saving adjustment when Set time zone automatically is on; when it is off, a separate daylight-saving control is documented. Regional format settings change how dates and times are displayed in apps, not the device’s time zone. Microsoft Teams, for example, documents regional format and device time zone as separate settings in its Teams settings guidance.
If the setting keeps changing or cannot be changed
- Confirm the time-zone switch. Go to Settings > Time & language > Date & time. Turn off Set time zone automatically and choose your intended zone if you want it fixed.
- If you prefer automatic selection, check location access. Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Location and review device-level Location services and the account-level access option, where available.
- Set a default location if detection is imprecise. On the Location page, use Default location > Set default, then enter or select the PC’s location and save.
- Check for organization management. If Windows says a setting is managed by your organization or does not let you change it, ask your workplace or school administrator whether a policy controls location or time-zone settings.
- Check Windows Update before attempting advanced changes. Microsoft recommends Windows Update or official time-zone updates for time-zone data issues rather than editing the registry manually. Its guidance explains that Windows stores the time-zone database separately from the currently selected zone; an incorrect registry edit can cause problems. See Microsoft’s KB914387.
Windows documentation explains the available controls, but it does not establish why every individual PC repeatedly changes zones. The cause can depend on the Windows build, device type, available location signals, or organization policy.
