To make another monitor your main display in Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display, identify the screens, select the tile for the monitor you want, then choose the main-display control in its settings. Its wording may vary by Windows 11 build.
How do I set a different primary monitor?

Connect and turn on the displays. Check that their cables are seated and that your PC or dock supports the configuration.

Open Start > Settings > System > Display.

Select Identify. Windows shows a number on each physical screen; match those numbers to the display tiles in Settings. Microsoft notes that each display is numbered to make it easier to identify.

Select the tile for the monitor you want to use as the main display. Windows applies display-specific settings to the selected screen.

Find and choose the main-display option in that screen’s settings. Microsoft’s older Windows 8 instructions call it “Make this my main display”; look for the equivalent control in your current Windows 11 interface rather than expecting that exact label in every build.
Is the primary display the same as screen arrangement or display mode?
No. The main-display choice determines which connected screen Windows treats as primary. The arrangement diagram controls the screens’ positions relative to each other, which affects how the pointer moves between them. Display mode controls whether screens show separate or mirrored content.

What if a monitor is missing or the wrong screen is selected?
The wrong physical monitor is selected
Use Identify before selecting a numbered tile. Match the number displayed on the physical monitor to the tile in Settings.
A connected monitor does not appear
Check the cable and port, then expand Multiple displays and select Detect. Microsoft also recommends checking for Windows updates.

The PC does not support the requested number of displays
The graphics adapter can limit how many monitors a PC supports. Check with the PC or graphics adapter maker for the supported configuration. A simple display splitter duplicates one signal; it does not create two independent extended displays.
Will Windows remember the main display after docking?
Windows includes separate options for remembering window locations based on monitor connection and minimizing windows when a monitor disconnects. Those preferences do not establish that the primary-display choice will persist across every dock, reconnection, or hardware change.

Does showing the taskbar on every monitor make each one primary?
No. The taskbar’s multi-display preference is separate from the main-display setting. Showing the taskbar on multiple screens does not itself change which display Windows treats as primary.
