To meet a chosen false-positive budget, set a detector’s threshold using scores from representative benign examples. Attack examples do not determine that threshold: they show how many attacks the selected operating point catches and help you decide whether the false-alarm budget is worth accepting. This holds for a fixed scoring function and benign-traffic distribution; it does not guarantee the same false-positive rate on every future traffic mix.

Why benign scores set a false-positive threshold

Suppose a detector assigns each input a score, and inputs above a cutoff are flagged. The false-positive rate is the share of benign inputs that the cutoff incorrectly flags. To constrain that rate, choose a cutoff from the distribution of benign scores: in effect, it is a quantile of those scores.

For example, if higher scores mean more suspicious and the target is a 2% false-positive rate, the threshold should be near the point above which 2% of representative benign scores fall. The exact estimate depends on the calibration method and sample. If lower scores indicate greater risk, reverse the direction accordingly.

This is a conditional statistical result, not a universal rule that all thresholds can be learned without attack data. It assumes the score function is fixed and the benign calibration examples reasonably represent the benign inputs on which the threshold will be used.

What attack examples are for

Attack-labeled examples answer a different question: at a particular threshold, what fraction of attacks does the detector catch? That true-positive rate is essential for judging usefulness. Attack performance, together with the operational costs of missed attacks and false alarms, helps determine what false-positive budget to accept. Once the budget is set, however, attack scores do not set the threshold needed to meet it.

Do not confuse a good ranking with a good operating point. A detector can rank attacks above benign inputs effectively overall, yet still have an unsuitable threshold for the false-alarm rate your operation can tolerate. Compare true-positive performance at the selected false-positive rate, and consider ranking measures such as AUC separately from threshold calibration.

How to calibrate a threshold in practice

  1. Freeze the score function. Use the detector version and scoring configuration intended for deployment. A numeric score is not automatically comparable across models: the same cutoff can mean very different things on different score scales.
  2. Choose the false-positive budget. Set it based on the operational cost of alerts, review capacity, and the consequences of missed attacks. Attack examples can inform this trade-off, but they do not define the benign false-alarm constraint.
  3. Collect representative benign examples. Include the sources, domains, and input forms expected in deployment. Keep the calibration data distinct from the data used to evaluate final performance where practical.
  4. Score the benign examples and estimate the target quantile. Select the cutoff corresponding to the desired benign tail probability, using an explicit calibration method. Record the sample size, method, and resulting empirical false-positive rate.
  5. Evaluate attacks at that fixed cutoff. Measure the true-positive rate and the operational impact of errors. If the trade-off is unacceptable, reconsider the budget or detector; do not quietly tune against attack cases while claiming the original false-positive constraint.
  6. Validate uncertainty and traffic coverage. Estimate uncertainty using an appropriate finite-sample procedure, and check performance across important traffic groups or forms. A pooled rate can hide poor behavior for a subgroup.
  7. Monitor deployment benign scores. Compare ongoing benign score behavior with calibration data. Reassess the threshold when benign traffic sources or forms change materially.

How much benign calibration data is enough?

There is no universal sample count. A small sample gives a noisy estimate of an extreme quantile, and the needed size depends on the target rate, desired confidence, calibration method, score distribution, and assumptions about future traffic. If the target is very low, only a few benign examples in a modest sample may lie beyond the estimated cutoff.

The author of a September 30, 2026 DEV Community article recommends “a few hundred” benign samples for a 2% budget. Treat that as practical guidance, not a theorem or a guarantee. The article’s cited benchmark uses only 97 benign tool outputs, which makes estimates of low false-alarm rates especially uncertain.

Report what the calibration number means. An empirical 2% rate on the calibration sample is an observed proportion, not automatically a high-confidence promise about future traffic. Order-statistic methods can provide distribution-free finite-sample guarantees under their stated assumptions; conformal methods can also control false positives under exchangeability assumptions. These are specific procedures and assumptions, not properties conferred by simply taking a sample quantile.

What a reported prompt-injection benchmark shows—and does not show

A September 30, 2026 DEV Community article reports re-measuring a public prompt-injection benchmark with nine open-source detectors: 629 attacks and 97 benign tool outputs. Its figures are author-reported and were not independently reproduced in the sources reviewed here. They illustrate why a default numeric cutoff should not be presumed meaningful across detectors.

  • At a 0.5 cutoff, the article reports that Prompt Guard 2 caught 6 of 629 attacks (1.0%) and produced no benign alerts in that sample.
  • At the same cutoff, it reports benign-score medians near 0.999 and false-positive rates of 97.9% for deepset-deberta and fmops-distilbert.
  • For a reported cross-domain setup, it gives examples of false alarms on 13 of 20 travel samples (65%) for prompt-guard-2-22m and 5 of 21 Slack samples (24%) for prompt-guard-2-86m.
  • It reports that a threshold calibrated to a 2% false-alarm target exceeded that target in 11 of 36 held-out domain folds, with a pooled held-out false-alarm rate of 4.9%. The fold breach count alone does not establish domain shift; the article’s own discussion notes that small fold sizes make it sensitive to sampling noise.

These results are examples from one author-reported evaluation, not a general performance ranking or independent validation. The useful lesson is methodological: establish what a score means on benign traffic before treating a shared cutoff as comparable across detectors, then measure attack detection at the selected operating point.

Umsonst, Ruths, and Sandberg formalize threshold tuning as quantile estimation and analyze order-statistic estimators with finite-sample guarantees. Bates, Candès, Lei, Romano, and Sesia study conformal p-values for outlier detection and finite-sample false-positive control. Their work supports the distinction between calibration on reference or benign data and evaluation of detection performance; it does not independently validate the benchmark figures above. Bates and colleagues also caution in their paper’s abstract that a raw anomaly score has no calibrated meaning by itself.
