You can change an app’s notification tone from its notification-category settings on a Samsung Galaxy phone. If the category controls are missing, first enable Manage notification categories for each app in Advanced settings.
Set a notification sound for an app
Samsung says app-specific notification sounds can be customized from the app settings menu. The detailed category-based steps below are documented on a UK Galaxy Z Flip6 running One UI 6.1.1, so menu labels and available options may vary by model, software version, region, and app. Read Samsung’s guidance on sounds, vibrations, and notifications.

Open Settings and tap Notifications > Advanced settings.

Turn on Manage notification categories for each app, if the switch is shown.

Return to Settings and tap Apps, then select the app you want to adjust.

Tap Notifications > Notification categories.

Tap the category name whose sound you want to change. Tap the row itself, not only its on/off switch.

Tap Sound and select a tone.

Why the sound options may look different
Apps can have different notification categories
Notification categories represent types of alerts an app can send. One app may expose several categories while another offers fewer; there is no guarantee that every app has the same categories or one universal app-wide sound setting. Choose the category that corresponds to the alerts you want to hear differently.

Notification tones are not Separate app sound
A notification sound is the tone played for an alert. Samsung’s Separate app sound setting instead routes an app’s audio to an audio device. It does not assign a notification tone. Samsung describes these as distinct controls in its Galaxy sound and notification guidance.

No Notification categories option: Go to Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings and check whether Manage notification categories for each app is available and enabled. Samsung Community guidance says enabling it exposes category controls in some configurations. See the category walkthrough.

You see categories but not Sound: Open the category by tapping its name or row. Tapping only the category’s enable/disable switch changes whether that category can notify; it does not open the detailed sound settings. This distinction is also noted in a Samsung Members solution for app-specific notification sounds.

The category list does not offer the alert type you want: The controls available depend on the app. The cited guidance does not establish a universal way to add categories or override an app’s options.

Your menus do not match these steps: The detailed example is for a specific phone, region, and software version. Samsung’s general support guidance confirms that app-specific customization exists, but does not establish identical menus for every Galaxy phone or app. Check the labels on your device and the app’s own notification options.
