To set a church YouTube stream to 720p, enable manual resolution in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then set the encoder to 1280×720 and choose a bitrate that matches its codec. YouTube recommends 2–6 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 3–8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p. Those are ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee your venue can sustain the stream: test upload speed under service-like conditions, leave bandwidth headroom, and lower resolution if the connection is unreliable.
Enable manual 720p settings in YouTube Studio
- Open the Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Go Live to open the Live Control Room.
- Create or select a custom stream key. A custom key lets you use repeatable manual resolution settings. Open the stream’s resolution options and enable manual settings. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains the available controls.
- Set the encoder output. Choose 1280×720 resolution, select a frame rate, and set the codec and bitrate in the encoder. Make sure the encoder settings agree with the selected stream configuration.
- Configure the stream connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport to its servers. Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four. Set constant bitrate (CBR).
- Start a test stream. Test before the service with representative audio and movement, and check stream health in the Live Control Room. YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Choose the 720p bitrate for your codec
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists the same 720p bitrate ranges at 30 and 60 fps. Select the range for the codec the encoder sends to YouTube, not a bitrate table intended for uploading prerecorded videos.

These are YouTube’s recommended live-ingestion figures on its encoder settings page, accessed in 2026. They are not guarantees that a particular internet connection will work. Use a codec supported by both your encoder and YouTube ingestion.
Choose 30 or 60 fps based on the service
For a mostly stationary pulpit, choir, or worship service, 30 fps is a reasonable bandwidth-conscious starting point. Choose 60 fps when smoother motion matters, such as for frequent movement or fast camera pans, and the encoder and connection can support it. Do not assume 30 fps qualifies for a lower YouTube-listed 720p bitrate range: the listed ranges are the same for both frame rates.

Check upload speed and leave headroom
Measure outbound upload speed at the venue, ideally at a time and under conditions similar to the service. The available upload capacity—not the number printed on an internet plan—must carry the stream reliably. YouTube says, “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available,” and recommends 20% headroom. Its guidance also says the primary stream, backup stream, and that margin should all fit within outbound capacity. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Account for other people and devices using the same connection. Shared use can leave less upload capacity for the encoder.
- Allow room for variation rather than aiming to use every bit of measured upload capacity. A brief slowdown can interrupt a stream that only just fits.
- If the venue has unstable Wi-Fi and the encoder can connect to the router, wired Ethernet may address that local wireless instability. It cannot increase the ISP’s upload capacity or fix a saturated upstream connection.
If the tested connection cannot sustain your chosen bitrate with headroom, lower the resolution and use the bitrate range for the new settings. Do not force 720p simply because the encoder offers it.

Test and monitor before and during the service
Run a representative test
Before service, stream a test with the same encoder, camera movement, audio setup, and connection you expect to use. Check for stable stream health in the Live Control Room and confirm the encoder is sending the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. Testing under realistic conditions can reveal shared-network congestion that a quiet-time speed test misses.

During the service, monitor the Live Control Room and encoder for warnings or error messages. If YouTube reports an incorrect bitrate, check that the encoder matches the stream’s ingestion settings. YouTube notes that a non-variable-resolution entrypoint must use the exact bitrate specified in ingestion settings. Consult YouTube’s live streaming error messages for the reported condition and recommended response.

What viewers will see—and what 720p does not guarantee
Setting 720p in the encoder controls the incoming stream; it does not guarantee that every viewer will be offered 720p playback. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into different output formats, and a viewer’s device and network affect which playback quality is delivered. For a congregation watching on varied connections, a stable stream is more useful than insisting on a resolution the venue’s upload cannot sustain.
