There is no single Samsung-wide menu path for separating 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi‑Fi names. The steps depend on the router’s exact model, firmware and whether your internet provider manages it. Find the model first, then follow that router’s manual or your provider’s instructions; do not rely on a guessed admin address or setting name.

What separating the bands means

A dual-band router can support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi‑Fi while showing one network name for both. To separate the bands, you need a router setting that lets you give each band its own network name, also called an SSID. The names are chosen by the owner; Samsung does not prescribe a naming convention.

Separate names are useful when you need to select a particular band for a device. They are not, by themselves, evidence that a connection will be faster or better. Samsung’s support information addresses device compatibility, not comparative performance.

Before changing the router

  • Find the router’s brand and exact model on its label, in its device information, or in the internet provider’s app.
  • Check whether your provider supplied or manages the router. Its firmware may determine which wireless settings you can change.
  • Check the manual for the device you are connecting. Network requirements vary by product; Samsung’s US support page, “Cannot connect a home appliance to SmartThings,” says that requirements vary between devices. Do not assume every Samsung TV or appliance has the same band requirement.
  • Decide whether you need two names or only need to ensure 2.4 GHz is enabled. Splitting names is not a universal requirement for using a dual-band router.

Choose the route that matches your router

Router situation What to do What to expect
The model’s settings provide separate band names Use that model’s manual to find its Wi‑Fi or wireless settings and configure distinct names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. You can select a band by choosing its network name.
No separate-name option is visible, or the provider manages the router Ask the provider or router manufacturer whether separate names are supported and who can change the setting. The available controls depend on the router and its firmware; the provider may control them.

How to separate the names when the router supports it

  1. Identify the exact router model. Use the label, the router’s device information, or your provider’s app. A Samsung-branded device is not enough to determine the correct instructions.
  2. Open the manual or provider support instructions. Look for terms such as Wi‑Fi, wireless, network name, SSID, 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or Smart Connect/band steering. Samsung’s support guidance for router configuration points users to the router manual or provider; its SmartThings Wifi setup material does not document a universal band-separation sequence.
  3. Check that separate names are supported. If the instructions show controls for naming each band, enter a different SSID for each and save the change as directed for that model. Do not assume that a combined-name setting can be changed in the same way on every router.
  4. Reconnect the target device. Select the name for the band that device supports. For an appliance documented as 2.4 GHz-only, choose the 2.4 GHz network.
  5. Verify the connection in the device’s setup flow. If setup still fails, consult the device manual and the router or provider instructions rather than changing unrelated router settings.

If a Samsung device will not connect

Check the exact device’s requirements

Some Samsung appliances cannot connect to 5 GHz, but this is model-specific. For example, Samsung Canada’s support page for the AirDresser model DF60R8200DG says that this appliance cannot connect to 5 GHz. That example should not be generalized to other appliances; check the manual for the product you are setting up.

Check whether 2.4 GHz is enabled

Samsung’s South Africa appliance-registration guidance discusses a 5 GHz-configured router in the context of registering an appliance. Treat that advice as appliance troubleshooting, not as a universal rule for every router or Samsung device. If your device requires 2.4 GHz, confirm that the router provides it and follow the device-specific setup instructions.

Distinguish band selection from SmartThings discovery

If the issue is that SmartThings cannot find a device, rather than choosing between two network names, Samsung Korea’s troubleshooting guidance says to check that 2.4 GHz is enabled when the access point is 5 GHz-only and to check whether the access point name is hidden. Follow the instructions for the affected device and router.

Why you may not see a Samsung router setting

Samsung’s US SmartThings Wifi support page explains setup for SmartThings Hub, SmartThings Wifi, or Connect Home; it does not establish a universal menu sequence for splitting Wi‑Fi names across Samsung routers. The equipment in a home may instead be supplied or configured by an internet provider or another manufacturer. If your router’s manual has no separate-band control, or you cannot change its settings, ask the provider or router manufacturer whether the feature is available.
