To send SMS messages from WordPress, install a plugin that matches the message type, connect it to an SMS provider, configure recipients and triggers, then send a test. General site notifications, WooCommerce order updates, and signup phone verification use different workflows, so choose the one that fits before configuring anything.

Choose the right SMS workflow

A WordPress plugin connects a site event or action to an SMS gateway, which delivers the text. You will generally need a provider account, the requested API credentials, and a sender number or sender ID. Provider requirements and country coverage vary; check the chosen provider’s current instructions.

What you want to send Suitable path What it handles
General WordPress notifications WSMS (formerly WP SMS) Messages to phone numbers, subscribers, or WordPress users, plus notifications and integrations described in its plugin listing.
WooCommerce order updates WooCommerce Twilio SMS Notifications Customer texts for configured order-status changes, administrator new-order alerts, and manual messages from an order.
Phone verification during signup WooCommerce User Registration A one-time passcode (OTP) requested and verified as part of registration, using Twilio or Firebase as the documented provider options.

For general site messaging, the WSMS plugin listing describes SMS/MMS, notifications for new users and other site events, OTP, two-factor authentication, and integrations. Its project repository also describes sending to phone numbers, subscribers, and WordPress users, and lists hooks and REST API support. Check the plugin’s current interface for available gateways and features before relying on a particular integration.

If your goal is WooCommerce order notifications, use an order-focused extension rather than assuming a general notification plugin will expose the required order-status controls. For signup verification, choose the registration workflow: it verifies a phone number during account creation; it is not a routine notification or order update.

Send general WordPress SMS notifications with WSMS

  1. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New, search for WSMS (formerly WP SMS), install it, and activate it. Follow the current WordPress.org listing for installation and update information.
  2. Open WSMS settings and select an SMS gateway shown in the plugin’s current interface. Create or configure an account with that provider if needed.
  3. Enter the gateway credentials the plugin requests, and set the sender ID or sender number required by your provider.
  4. Save the settings, then configure the site events, recipients, and message content you want. Make sure the workflow has a valid phone number for each intended recipient.
  5. Use the plugin’s test option to send a message to a number you control. If it fails, check the credentials, sender configuration, provider coverage, and the plugin’s available logs or status details.

WSMS’s listing names multiple gateways and integrations, but availability can change and may depend on provider, geography, or feature tier. Confirm the choices presented in your installation rather than assuming every listed capability is available in every configuration.

Send WooCommerce order updates with Twilio

The WooCommerce Twilio SMS Notifications extension is intended for customer texts triggered by configured order-status changes. It also supports administrator new-order alerts and a manual message from the Edit Order screen. The official setup guide covers its settings and installation.

  1. Obtain the extension ZIP, then in WordPress go to Plugins > Add New > Upload, upload the ZIP, install, and activate the extension.
  2. In the extension settings, enter your Twilio Account SID, Auth Token, and purchased sending number.
  3. Select the order statuses that should trigger customer texts, configure the message, and set up administrator alerts if required.
  4. Review the customer opt-in checkbox setting. The extension documentation recommends leaving the checkbox unchecked by default and warns that leaving its label blank disables the checkbox, causing all customers to receive SMS updates. This describes the extension’s behavior; it is not a universal statement about legal requirements.
  5. Save your settings and test with an order and destination number you control. For a Twilio trial account, the guide says the destination number must already be verified in Twilio.

The documentation says there is no additional extension-use fee, but Twilio subscription and message-usage charges still apply. If a message does not appear, review the relevant order notes or extension logs and check the provider account. WooCommerce cautions that “SMS messages aren’t 100% reliable and sometimes may get lost,” so do not make SMS the only channel for a time-critical update.

Verify phone numbers during WooCommerce registration

For phone verification during signup, configure the WooCommerce User Registration workflow rather than an order-notification extension. Its documentation describes Twilio or Firebase as SMS OTP providers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the registration extension’s settings and choose Twilio or Firebase as the SMS provider.
  2. Enter the provider credentials it requests and configure the verification message.
  3. Enable phone verification in the registration flow and ensure the form collects a phone number.
  4. Test the process as a new user: enter a phone number, request the code, and submit the code to verify the number.

This process verifies a number as part of registration. It does not by itself configure ongoing notifications to existing WordPress users or WooCommerce customers.

Collect recipient numbers and check message controls

SMS delivery depends on having a usable phone number where the chosen workflow can access it. For WooCommerce, the SMS Customer Notifications documentation tells administrators to ensure members have phone numbers saved on their profiles or collected through signup. Check the relevant user profile, checkout, or registration form before troubleshooting the gateway.

Before enabling messages, decide which events should send texts, who should receive them, and how recipients’ preferences are handled. WooCommerce’s Twilio extension provides an opt-in checkbox setting; configure it deliberately and do not treat one extension’s control as a blanket legal guarantee. Consent and messaging requirements can depend on the place and purpose of the messages.

For other store and admin alerts, WooCommerce separately documents SMS Customer Notifications for order-status notices, administrator alerts for order and stock events, gateway configuration, and manual messages. Its SMS Alert Notifications documentation describes administrator alerts for new user registrations and other store events. Check that an extension is maintained and supports the exact trigger you need before installing it.

Troubleshoot a message that does not arrive

  • Check the destination: Confirm the intended user has a valid phone number saved in the profile or collected through the relevant form.
  • Check provider setup: Re-enter or verify the API credentials and sender ID or sending number in the plugin settings.
  • Check provider requirements: Confirm the sender and destination are supported in the relevant country. For a Twilio trial account using the WooCommerce extension, verify the destination number in Twilio first.
  • Check the trigger: Confirm the event is enabled and that the order status or registration step actually meets its configured condition.
  • Check logs and order notes: Review the extension’s available status details, logs, or relevant order notes to identify a provider or configuration failure.
  • Send a controlled test: Test with a number you control before enabling a workflow for users. A successful test confirms configuration at that moment, but SMS delivery is not guaranteed.

Choose by purpose, cost, and control

Compare candidate plugins on whether they handle your actual trigger, which gateways they currently support, whether your provider covers your recipients’ locations, how numbers are collected, what preference controls are available, and whether you need one-way notifications or a more interactive workflow. The available documentation establishes SMS sending and notifications, but does not establish that every listed setup supports two-way texting.

WSMS is the documented general WordPress route, with gateway and integration options described in its listing. The Twilio extension is a more specific WooCommerce order-event route and requires Twilio credentials and a sending number; provider charges remain separate from the extension-use fee. OTP registration is a distinct feature with its own provider and signup settings. Choose based on the job, not merely on the fact that each option sends SMS.
