To send a screenshot API request from AWS Lambda, make an HTTPS request from your function to the screenshot provider’s endpoint, authenticate with that provider’s credential, and then handle the response as binary image data, PDF data, or an error. This is separate from invoking Lambda itself: AWS credentials and the Lambda Invoke API do not replace the screenshot provider’s API key.
How the request flows
- Lambda builds an HTTPS request. Include the target page URL and any capture options required by the provider.
- The request authenticates with the screenshot service. Retrieve its API key from protected configuration, such as AWS Secrets Manager, rather than hard-coding it.
- Your function handles the response. Check the HTTP status and content type before saving, returning, or otherwise processing the response bytes.
AWS recommends using an AWS SDK for requests to AWS service APIs. A third-party screenshot API is a separate HTTP service; use its documented HTTP contract or its own SDK. See the AWS Lambda Invoke API guidance.
Choose the provider request format
Before writing the Lambda code, check the provider’s documentation for its endpoint, method, required parameters, authentication method, output format, and size or timeout limits. Providers differ, so the example below is specific to ScreenshotOne and should not be treated as a universal screenshot API format.
ScreenshotOne request options
ScreenshotOne documents GET and POST requests. A URL capture can use either; POST JSON is useful for larger HTML or Markdown inputs. Its API accepts the access key as a query parameter, in a JSON body, or in an X-Access-Key header. Prefer a header or POST body where supported to reduce the chance that a key appears in URL logs or shared links. Use HTTPS.

ScreenshotOne documents a maximum POST body of 100 MiB. Its default by_format response is binary image data with a matching content type; it also documents formats including PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, TIFF, AVIF, HEIF, and PDF. See the ScreenshotOne API documentation and its API options reference.
Call a screenshot API from Node.js Lambda
This illustrative Node.js example uses the built-in fetch API to call ScreenshotOne’s HTTPS endpoint and returns the screenshot bytes to the caller as a base64-encoded Lambda proxy response. It does not require the ScreenshotOne SDK. Configure the Lambda runtime for a Node.js version that supports global fetch, set SCREENSHOTONE_ACCESS_KEY as a protected environment variable or retrieve it from Secrets Manager, and set SCREENSHOT_API_URL to the page to capture.
export const handler = async () => {
const accessKey = process.env.SCREENSHOTONE_ACCESS_KEY;
const targetUrl = process.env.SCREENSHOT_API_URL;
if (!accessKey || !targetUrl) {
throw new Error("Missing SCREENSHOTONE_ACCESS_KEY or SCREENSHOT_API_URL");
}
const endpoint = new URL("https://api.screenshotone.com/take");
endpoint.searchParams.set("url", targetUrl);
endpoint.searchParams.set("access_key", accessKey);
endpoint.searchParams.set("format", "png");
const response = await fetch(endpoint, { method: "GET" });
const contentType = response.headers.get("content-type") || "";
const bytes = Buffer.from(await response.arrayBuffer());
if (!response.ok) {
// Do not return provider error content as if it were an image.
throw new Error(`Screenshot API returned HTTP ${response.status}: ${bytes.toString("utf8")}`);
}
if (!contentType.startsWith("image/")) {
throw new Error(`Expected an image response; received ${contentType || "unknown content type"}`);
}
return {
statusCode: 200,
headers: { "Content-Type": contentType },
isBase64Encoded: true,
body: bytes.toString("base64")
};
};
The format parameter and response behavior must match the provider’s current contract and your chosen output. If you only need to store the result, write the bytes to configured storage instead of returning a large base64 body. Keep the API key private: a query-string key can be exposed by logs or a URL that is shared. ScreenshotOne documents signed-URL support when a generated URL must be shared.

POST JSON for larger inputs
When sending HTML or Markdown, use the provider’s documented POST format rather than placing a large payload in a URL. ScreenshotOne documents POST JSON and supports credentials in the body or header. Follow its current parameter schema for the particular input and options; do not assume that every provider accepts ScreenshotOne’s field names.

Return image data through API Gateway
For an API Gateway REST API Lambda proxy integration, binary output requires both Lambda response encoding and API configuration. The handler must base64-encode the image body, set isBase64Encoded to true, and return the actual image content type. Configure the REST API’s binary media types to include the type you serve, such as image/png, and deploy the API after changing its configuration. See AWS guidance for binary media with Lambda proxy integrations.
API Gateway’s documented binary-media guide lists a 10 MB payload limit; validate the applicable limit and configuration for your specific API type before relying on it. Base64 also increases payload size, so large captures may be better written to object storage and returned as a reference rather than relayed through the API response.

Store the result instead of returning it
If a caller does not need the image bytes in the immediate response, store the screenshot in a configured destination and return a compact status or reference. ScreenshotOne documents optional storage to a configured S3 bucket or S3-compatible endpoint, and its response_type=empty mode can be used when the caller needs status or error information rather than image bytes. Storage must be configured with the provider; do not assume a public object URL is returned automatically.
Decide whether the work should be synchronous
For an interactive request, the caller generally needs the capture result before it can continue. In that case, the Lambda invocation and upstream HTTP timeouts must allow enough time for the provider’s capture plus your function’s response handling. Configure Lambda’s timeout and the caller or API Gateway integration timeout as a coordinated set.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For work that can complete later, queue a job and return a job identifier or acknowledgement, then store the completed result for retrieval. AWS Lambda’s Invoke API distinguishes synchronous RequestResponse from asynchronous Event invocation. Those are invocation modes for Lambda, not screenshot-provider modes. AWS documents maximum Invoke payloads of 6 MB synchronously and 1 MB asynchronously; inspect the function-error indicators and payload because a 2xx Invoke status alone does not prove successful function execution. See the Invoke API reference.

Secure credentials and control exposure
- Do not commit a screenshot API key to source control or embed it in browser-facing code.
- Use a protected environment variable for a simple deployment or retrieve the secret from AWS Secrets Manager where centralized secret management is required.
- Restrict who can read or change the function configuration and secret.
- Avoid logging complete request URLs when credentials are in query parameters. Prefer a documented header or POST body where supported.
- Do not return provider error bodies to untrusted callers without considering whether they contain sensitive details; log a safe diagnostic and return a suitable application error.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP 401 or 403 from the provider | Missing, invalid, or unauthorized provider credential | Confirm the secret is present at runtime, uses the expected header or parameter, and belongs to the correct provider account. |
| HTTP 400 or a provider JSON error | Missing or invalid target URL, option, or request body | Read the provider error code and message; verify parameter names and JSON shape against its API documentation. |
| Function times out | Capture and transfer take longer than the configured Lambda or upstream timeout | Check provider latency, Lambda timeout, API Gateway or caller timeout, and image size. Use asynchronous processing for work that need not finish in the request. |
| Returned file is corrupt or displayed as text | Binary bytes were treated as text, base64 encoding was omitted, or the content type is wrong | Check the provider response’s status and Content-Type; preserve raw bytes and set the correct proxy encoding and API Gateway binary media configuration. |
| API Gateway response is too large | The image plus base64 expansion exceeds the response path’s applicable limit | Reduce capture dimensions or use configured object storage and return a reference instead. |
| Screenshot key appears in logs or shared URLs | Credential was sent in a query string and the full URL was recorded or exposed | Use a supported header or POST body, redact URL logs, and rotate the key if it was exposed. |
Or skip the browser setup
Instead of managing a browser in Lambda, call ScreenshotNeo, a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-request API returns a screenshot or PDF; before capture, it accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Those cleanup steps can be turned off individually.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Example cURL request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo’s response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an AWS SDK to call a screenshot API from Lambda?
No. An AWS SDK is recommended for AWS service APIs; a screenshot vendor’s external API can be called using its documented HTTP interface or its own SDK.
Can Lambda return a screenshot directly to a browser?
Yes, through a suitable API integration. For an API Gateway REST API Lambda proxy response, configure binary media support and return the image as base64 with its content type.
